BERLIN — German authorities say at least 19 people were injured, four seriously after a fireworks show went awry at a fair in the western city of Düsseldorf.
Fire squad and emergency services deployed after the incident late Friday at the Rheinkirmes event along the Rhine river, where images from the scene showed fireworks going off nearly at ground level along its banks.
A child was among the injured, the DPA news agency reported.
Düsseldorf fire services said police were investigating the cause of the accident.
'Our thoughts are with those affected and their families. We wish all those affected a speedy recovery from the consequences of the accident. We deeply regret the accident,' said Peter Dietlmaier, a spokesman
Organizers ended the fair early for the day, and were deciding whether to continue the traditional fireworks at next year's event, he said.
The 10-day fair features amusement park rides, drone and fireworks shows, and other entertainment by hundreds of staff along the left bank of the Rhine, opposite the city's historic district. The fair is organized by the St. Sebastianus Rifle Club, which traces its history to the year 1316.

2 children struck by vehicles in separate incidents Wednesday: Ottawa police

The sign outside Ottawa Police headquarters on Elgin St. is seen in this undated photo. (Aaron Reid/CTV News Ottawa) Ottawa police say two children were struck by cars while riding two-wheeled vehicles in separate incidents on Wednesday. Police say they responded to the area of West Ridge Drive and Eliza Cresent in Stittsville at approximately 11:19 a.m. after a collision with a vehicle involving a nine-year-old child on a scooter. The child was assessed at the scene by paramedics with non-life threatening injuries, police say. The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 40s, was charged with fail to yield to a pedestrian. A little over an hour later, police responded to a collision between a cyclist and a vehicle in the area of Greenbank Road and Larkin Drive in Barrhaven at 12:35 p.m. Emergency crews attended the scene and assessed a nine-year-old boy for non-life threatening injuries, according to Ottawa paramedics spokesperson Marc-Antoine Deschamps. The boy was taken to hospital in stable condition, he said. The driver was not injured. The crash led to a brief closure at the time of the crash. The collision is still being investigated, police say. The collisions comes less than a day after a woman in her 30s on a bike was critically injured in Stittsville on Sweetnam Drive. Her injuries are considered 'life threatening.' A 27-year-old female pedestrian was killed on July 11 after being hit by a pickup truck at the intersection of Elgin Street and Laurier Avenue West.

Crash between gravel, water trucks leaves one dead: RCMP

A Tuesday morning crash between two trucks on Manitoba's Highway 1 has left one man dead. Officers responded to the intersection of Highway 1 and Road 101 West around 7:30 a.m., where they found a gravel truck that had been hit from behind by a truck hauling a water tank. RCMP investigated and determined the driver of the gravel truck was getting up to speed after turning onto the highway from Curries Landing Road when he was hit by the water truck. The 22-year-old driver of the water truck sustained minor injuries, but his 20-year-old male passenger died at the scene. The 59-year-old driver of the gravel truck was not injured. Police note all those involved were wearing seatbelts. RCMP continues to investigate.
