Future of 'unique' floating restaurant to be determined
Plans for a floating restaurant were discussed at Bournemouth Town Hall on June 17, in a licensing sub-committee meeting that was lead by councillor David Flagg.
Paul Trickett and wife Virginia Hazell-Trickett have applied for a premises licence to permit recorded music and the supply of alcohol for their floating venture, Christchurch Harbour Kitchen.
When asked to state his case, Mr Trickett described the restaurant as as a site that will serve alcohol to 'responsible' people and by no means will it be a 'party boat'.
He added that the idea is 'quite unique' and that he designed the structure himself.
Mrs Hazell-Trickett added: "We are trying to create something different."
Proposals for the seaborne venture have frustrated some members of the public, with many fearing that the venue will bring loud noise, anti-social behaviour and excess waste to the area.
In response to queries over the music, Mrs Hazell-Trickett stated that it "won't be louder than anyone that's speaking".
Another fear expressed by the public is surrounding the safety of the unit and if lifejackets are needed, especially for children.
Mr Trickett stated that the site is based on a 'static platform' and will not move while customers are on board.
He added that as the site is not moving, they do not see the need for lifejackets.
He said: "We do not feel as if there are going to be any hazards there."
Objecting the plans, Richard Slater from the Beach House in Mudeford spit, stated that the pair seemed to be 'unprepared' at the meeting, adding that the 'lack of experience' 'concerns' him.
Mr Slater said: "They don't appreciate that children can drown in a foot of a water.
"It would be a danger to the children playing in that area.
"Health and safety seems to be an afterthought."
Mr Trickett explained that he had designed two legs with 'diamond type arrow poles' which will sit under the raft and pierce the sand, holding its position.
Alongside the concerns for the safety of the general public, Mr Slater stated his concerns for the environmental impact the site may have.
He discussed that the site may damage and interfere with salmon spawning grounds in the area and was disappointed that no environmental impact or noise assessment surveys were completed.
BCP Councils decision will be made public later in the week.

Few FTSE stocks have outperformed Rolls-Royce shares so far this year. As I type, the engineering titan has delivered a 66% gain to anyone who got involved as markets opened back up in January. However, this return pales in comparison to what holders of a certain under-the-radar company have earned. Incredible performance Stop a stranger and ask whether they've heard of Rank Group (LSE: RNK) and they'll probably give a blank expression. But they may be more familiar with some of its brands, such as Mecca Bingo and Grosvenor Casinos, even if they've never used them. Now, I'll be the first to admit that this space doesn't get my pulse racing. Even so, I'm sure existing holders will be very happen at the recent price movement. Shares in Rank Group currently stand 91% higher than where they started 2025. The gain's even greater when tracked over the last 12 months (127%). To make things even more interesting, most of this uplift has only come in the last couple of months. Strong tailwinds At least some of this magnificent momentum's down to improved trading. In its most recent update, the firm said that like-for-like net gaming revenue had grown by 11% (to around £795m) in the 12 months to the end of June. This was in spite of 'significant cost and regulatory headwinds' seen since the start of the final quarter. As a result, management expects underlying operating profit to come in ahead of expectations. The outlook's encouraging too, thanks to land-based casino reforms coming into effect last week (22 July). In a nutshell, these are being introduced to help modernise physical sites, allowing them to complete with online-only platforms. Changes include allowing smaller casinos to operate more gaming machines per gaming table. Sports betting will also be permitted. Long-term investors have suffered Of course, there are still risks that come from being a mostly physical (rather than digital) business. Energy costs remain high and the company must also cope with rising wage bills. Separately, it's worth noting that Rank shares have performed poorly over a longer timeline. Those who invested five years ago would have seen their capital grow just 12% in value. Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce shares are up nearly…1000%! To make matters worse, the £750m-cap company stopped distributing cash to holders in wake of the pandemic. These were only reinstated in FY24. Even today, the forecast dividend yield stands at just 1.4%. Granted, this is more than over at the FTSE 100 juggernaut. And then there's the question of fair value. The shares now change hands at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 18. This is significantly lower than Rolls-Royce whose P/E of 41 has arguably got a little silly. However, they're rather dear relative to other stocks in the Consumer Cyclicals space, suggesting a fair bit of good news is already priced in. One for the watchlist Taking all of the above into account, I'm tempted to add Rank Group to my portfolio today. But I would like to read its next set of results — due mid-August — before making a decision. Regardless, this example shows that smaller-cap stocks have the potential to outperform our biggest and most popular businesses, especially if they're snapped up when out of favour. Landlord nominated for prestigious award after just 6 months at pub
A landlord who has worked at a pub in Doffcocker for six months is 'thrilled' at being nominated for a prestigious Bolton News Best Pub Award. Ray Woods, who is the landlord at the Hope and Anchor Inn in Doffcocker, said that for the last five years he has been running 'micropubs' in Preston. He said: 'I'm really excited to find out that the pub has been nominated for a Bolton News Best Pub Award, it's a testament to the hard work that goes on here. The draft line-up at the Hope and Anchor Inn includes Guinness, Stella Artois, Angelo Poretti, Tetley's extra cold, Cruzcampo, Carlsberg, Tetley's dark mild, Somersby blackberry cider, Strongbow, Wainwright Gold, Timothy Taylor's and Inglenooks blonde bombshell. As well as the draft ales, Ray has also resurfaced the pool table and installed cameras. He added: 'We're hosting a summer party this weekend for the women's football, this includes a barbecue, games and food for customers, so we want it to be a proper celebration. 'The party will be from 2pm and everyone is invited! Reviews of the Hope and Anchor are also positive, one reviewer said: 'First time in this little gem of a pub. It was playoff final day and 6 Sunderland supporters needed a place to watch it. 'The staff put the football on for us, showed us a few rooms we could go into watch it that was a nice touch. Good selection of alcohol, great staff and great locals who we had a chat and a laugh with. Highly recommended boozer.' Another added: 'Family friendly pub with award winning real cask ales. On this day: Elvington brewery wins House of Commons contract
On this day in 2015, the York Press reported that a beer brewed near York would be served in the corridors of power. Elvington-based Hop Studio secured a contract to supply 50,000 bottles of its 'Porter' beer to the House of Commons over two years. The beer was to go on sale in three House of Commons shops, and in the House of Commons' catering facilities, in specially-designed labels under the name 'Treason.' Dave Shaw, founder and owner of the brewery, said the name would create a link to Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot, completing the link to York. Mr Shaw said: "We're really happy with it. The beer was to be specially branded as 'Treason,' in a nod to the Gunpowder Plot and to York-born Guy Fawkes "It was advertised as a contract, and it was a public sector tender, so quite a complicated process. "We did a pitch at the beginning of June and designed some labels. "We picked three beers and they have selected one. "We will brew it in August to get it into their shops for mid-October, then there is also a Christmas fair they do in November, and a tasting with MPs at the beginning of December. "It was advertised nationally, so I imagine breweries from all over the country have a go. "They whittled it down to five, which meant we went to pitch in the Palace of Westminster and as a result we are one of two supplying the beers. "The other is Windsor and Eton, who are supplying two. "We're delighted really. "It's a good prestigious contract. "It will be co-branded as Hop Studio and the House of Commons, and it's quite a good marketing opportunity, showing that we can do these sorts of contracts." At the original time of reporting in 2015, the beer was brewed in an industrial unit off York Road in Elvington, and included vanilla in its recipe.
