School students to be made aware of water conservation, Ganga cleanliness

The Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education director has issued a circular to schools asking them to organise student-led activities focused on water literacy and the cleanliness of the Ganga throughout the academic year. Principal of KP Inter College Yogendra Singh said: "The order outlines a detailed year-long roadmap for schools.
It encourages student involvement in cleanliness drives along the Ganga, promotes water-saving practices on school campuses, and highlights the broader importance of preserving natural water bodies.
" To ensure holistic development, the academic calendar also includes initiatives under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat programme, aiming to acquaint students with India's rich cultural, historical and geographical diversity.
Furthermore, schools are directed to include sports, cultural and literary events, and to observe key national and international days and weeks as part of their co-curricular schedule.
A key component of revised curriculum is experiential learning. Students will engage in field trips to local rivers, ponds and both rural and urban areas to study and report on regional water conservation practices. Awareness campaigns on road safety and importance of maintaining continuous and clean flow of the Ganga will be conducted. "These initiatives reflect state's commitment to building environmentally conscious citizens from a young age, using education as primary tool for sustainable development," he added.

UP to revamp DElEd English curriculum in line with NEP 2020
The curriculum for the English subject in the Diploma in Elementary Education (DElEd) programme—offered in 67 district institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and 2,974 private colleges across Uttar Pradesh—is set to be revamped in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The DElEd is a two-year diploma programme designed for candidates aspiring to become teachers in primary and upper primary schools. Its popularity is evident from the 3,25,440 applications received for admission to the 2024 session, according to data from the Exam Regulatory Authority, Uttar Pradesh, headquartered in Prayagraj. English is taught in the second and fourth semesters of the DElEd programme. The current English curriculum was last developed by ELTI in 2014, when the course was still known as the Basic Training Certificate (BTC). Since then, the educational landscape has evolved significantly—particularly with the inclusion of pre-primary education under NEP-2020, a component not covered in the existing curriculum, officials explained. In addition, NCERT textbooks for classes 1 to 3 have already been adapted to meet the specific needs of Uttar Pradesh and integrated into the school curriculum. Plans are in place to extend NCERT books up to class 8 in the near future. These books differ notably in structure and content, necessitating distinct teaching strategies and customised practice workbooks, they added. 'The English curriculum for DElEd is being comprehensively revised in accordance with NEP-2020. The previous version, created in 2014, no longer meets current educational demands. With the inclusion of NCERT textbooks and a shift in teaching methods, updating the syllabus has become essential. Feedback from trainees has been instrumental in shaping these changes,' said Skand Shukla, principal of ELTI-Prayagraj, a unit of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Uttar Pradesh. In response to these developments, the new English curriculum will be aligned with the updated school education system to ensure DElEd trainees gain relevant skills and competencies. The revised course will also feature components on artificial intelligence (AI) and language learning, along with the application of computer, information, and communication technologies in English language teaching. Crucially, feedback from DIET trainees has been incorporated to ensure the curriculum revision reflects their actual learning needs and challenges, Shukla added. In another key development, for the first time, the Rajya Hindi Sansthan, Varanasi, has developed official Hindi textbooks for all four semesters of the DElEd programme. Previously, students lacked access to authentic learning materials in Hindi and had to rely on guides or unauthorised publications, officials acknowledged.

414 government primary schools in Prayagraj likely to face merger
Following the directive to merge government-run primary and upper primary schools with low student enrollment into nearby schools, the officials from the state's basic education department acknowledge that 414 schools in Prayagraj district have fewer than 50 students enrolled. Before the schools are paired, the benefits of the merger will be communicated to parents, community members, local officials, school teachers, and teacher unions. (FOR REPRESENTATION) A meeting in this regard has already been held, and according to the state government's directive, block education officers (BEOs) will now visit the identified schools and submit a proposal to the basic shiksha adhikari (BSA) for merging them with nearby schools. The proposals will be based on factors such as infrastructure facilities, accessibility, enrollment, inclusiveness, and local conditions and needs, officials explained. Confirming the development, acting BSA-Prayagraj Devbrat Singh stated that a meeting has been conducted regarding the merging of primary and upper primary schools in the district with low student count. 'A report in this regard from the BEOs is expected soon, following which further action will be taken in accordance with the government orders,' he said. Before the schools are paired, the benefits of the merger will be communicated to parents, community members, local officials, school teachers, and teacher unions, officials said. There are around a dozen schools in the district where student count is below 10, said officials. Among them, primary schools of Amarpur and Domhar of Shankargarh development block have just three and four students, respectively. LIkewise, the primary school of Dharhariya Nagar area has five and primary school of Kechuadih Dhobiyan Basti in Karchhana has five students. Primary schools of Harkhuriya and Naubasta of Shankargarh block and upper primary school at Madra in Uruwa have only six students each, said officials. Similarly, only seven students are enrolled in the upper primary school at Mauhariya in Shankargarh, nine students each are registered in primary schools of Kechuadih and Lagari Patti in Karachhana besides primary school at Tendua in Shankargarh and upper primary school at Akbar Shahpur in Koraon block. The Uttar Pradesh basic education department has directed to merge low-enrolment council schools with nearby better-performing schools to improve education quality and optimise resource use. The guidelines, released on June 16 by additional chief secretary Deepak Kumar, aim to streamline infrastructure, teaching staff, and learning resources by operating the paired schools as unified entities. This initiative is expected to improve teacher availability, encourage peer learning, strengthen smart classes and Bal Vatikas, and boost student enrolment while reducing dropout rates. According to officials, district magistrates have been assigned the responsibility of identifying low-enrolment schools, conducting field inspections, engaging with stakeholders, and submitting regular progress reports.
