Attempted murder charges against wife of celebrated chef after house fire

The Advertiser3 days ago
A woman accused of trying to murder two children in a house fire has been identified as the wife of an Australian-based, internationally acclaimed chef.
Hyun Ju Ahn, 37, was arrested on July 17 and charged with two counts of attempted murder after a fire at the family's Chadstone home in Melbourne's southeast on the night of May 21.
She is married to Jae Bang, the head chef and owner of the celebrated Freyja restaurant on Collins Street in Melbourne's CBD.
The couple and their two children, aged eight and ten, have lived in Melbourne for three years.
Emergency services were called to a two-storey home on Terrigal Street in Chadstone at 9.40pm on May 21.
A woman and two girls were rescued from the fire and taken to the hospital in a critical condition, police said.
Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad investigated the fire and charged the 37-year-old woman with attempted murder after a two-month probe.
Her case remains before Melbourne Magistrates' Court.
A fundraiser, started almost a week before the charges were laid, had raised more than $20,000 to support the family.
The GoFundMe page, organised by fellow chefs, said that Mr Bang was away from Melbourne on May 21.
It said that the family was "unconscious when the firefighters rescued them".
"The family is recovering, but they have no home, no other family in the area, and have many expenses to cover from the fire rescue and hospital stays," it said.
The family has moved around the world as opportunities to work abroad arose.
Mr Bang worked his way through some of the most respected kitchens in the US, Europe and Asia before moving to Australia in 2022 to open the Nordic-inspired restaurant.
He told this masthead in April that, with such a busy schedule at the restaurant, the family relished their time together on the weekend.
He said they loved sharing a meal at their favourite Chinese restaurant, Tung Wo, when they had time.

Ready Steady Cook star Peter Everett charged with sexually touching 16-year-old boy

Former Ready Steady Cook host Peter Everett has appeared in court, charged with sexually touching a teenage boy without consent. Everett, who hosted the cooking game show from 2006 through 2011, fronted Sydney's Parramatta Court on Saturday, accused of sexually touching the 16-year-old boy from the Central Coast region of NSW. The alleged offence occurred in the town of Toukley last Friday. A NSW Police spokesperson told officers from Tuggerah Lakes Police District commenced an investigation regarding the alleged sexual touching of a 16-year-old boy at Toukley on the NSW Central Coast. "Following extensive inquiries, about 1.30pm Saturday 26 July 2025, police arrested a 66-year-old man at a home at Toukley," the spokesperson said. "The man was taken to Wyong Police Station where he was charged with sexually touch another person without consent. Everett spent Friday evening incarcerated before appearing in court the following day. The TV host pleaded not guilty to the charges and denied the allegations. He is expected to return to court in September. The development marks the latest in Everett's professional setbacks. He was sacked from the Australian adaptation of Ready Steady Cook in 2011, a competition show that features two teams, each consisting of a chef and a guest, competing to prepare meals using given ingredients. Everett replaced Nick Stratford as host of the show in 2006. He went on to transform it from a low-rated show into a commercial success, with the program nominated for three Logies during his tenure. However, there were rumours Everett was "difficult" to work with and clashed with the chefs. Everett was about to board a plane for an overseas holiday when he received a call from Rory Callaghan, former CEO of Southern Star Productions (Endemol Shine Australia), telling him he had been sacked. The TV host said Callaghan told him he thought he was "greater than the show." "I had no idea what that meant," Everett told in 2019. "I think it meant I thought I was so indispensable and that they couldn't do the show without me." "I said, 'I am a large part of the show, but I just want the best for the show'." Callaghan in 2011 told TV Tonight Network Ten had "reached a point" where production needed to progress without Everett. "It was a hard production with him, so it was time to move on," he said. Comedian Colin Lane replaced Everett, who in 2023 launched a fiery spray at Channel 10 for not inviting him back to the 2024 reboot. Chef Miguel Maestre hosted the programme, with Everett saying he acted like a spoiled child at being snubbed for the role. 'I was like a three-year-old for a couple of days, who constantly asks, "Why, why, why?'" he told New Idea at the time. "They didn't approach me for some reason. Who knows why? It's a shame."

'No appetite for him': Scandal-ridden Prince Andrew receives firm message from King Charles III he won't return to royal duties despite FBI dropping Jeffrey Epstein case

Prince Andrew's hopes of returning to royal duties have been firmly shut down by King Charles, despite the FBI confirming it will not pursue any further charges in the Jeffrey Epstein case. According to recent reports, the 65-year-old Duke of York has felt "optimistic" about stepping back into public life following announcements from the FBI and the US Department of Justice that no client list from Epstein exists and no third-party prosecutions will be pursued. But while the legal cloud may have lifted, his status within the Royal Family remains unchanged. Speaking to The Royal Report's Caroline Di Russo on Sunday, Bronte Coy confirmed the reminder from the King "shouldn't have come as too big of a surprise" to Andrew, though "it seems to have done". "The reports are that technically, the FBI are not pursuing any third-party charges (in relation to the Epstein case), and it seems that, in that regard, that shadow that has been cast over Andrew over the last few years is over now," Coy explained. "But when it comes to his royal duties and public life, nothing has changed." Coy said recent reporting suggested Andrew was "chipper" after the FBI dropped its investigation and was "possibly optimistic" about re-entering public life. But Charles, 76, has remained steadfast. "Andrew has been out of royal duties for five years, ever since his disastrous Newsnight interview, and he's had several controversies- his ties to Epstein were really just one of them,' she said. Coy also pointed to Andrew's links to alleged Chinese spy Yang Tengbo in late 2024, which saw him excluded from the Royal Family's Christmas celebrations. "At the very least, Prince Andrew is accused of very poor judgment along the way," Coy added. There also appears to be no public support for Andrew's return. "There's no appetite from the British public for him to return to Royal duties," Coy said. "And there seems to be no appetite at all from The King. "It was that reminder to Andrew that, despite the fact that it's a relief for him that the line has been drawn in the sand by the FBI, in terms of his future, he will probably just continue living life the way he was before- which by many accounts is largely reclusive." Though Andrew still resides at Royal Lodge with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, he has no public role and "there really doesn't look like there will ever be a return to it". Di Russo agreed, saying, "The Royal Family is trying to be relevant and relatable, and he just doesn't fit that strategy at all." Despite the end of legal proceedings, Prince Andrew's association with Epstein continues to raise eyebrows. As recently as last week, the Mirror reported Andrew was allegedly asked to contribute a message to a leather-bound birthday album for Epstein's 50th birthday- compiled in 2003 by Ghislaine Maxwell. The "bawdy" book reportedly contained letters and notes from Epstein's inner circle, celebrating his supposed genius and generosity. "Jeffrey always saw Andrew as the pinnacle of his pals," a source told the Mirror. "Ghislaine made sure he was asked to contribute. She made it sound like an honour to be included." It remains unclear whether Andrew submitted a message. The father-of-two settled a civil sexual abuse case with the late Virginia Giuffre, an Epstein accuser, in 2022, reportedly paying more than £12 million (AUD $16.3 million). That same year, the late Queen Elizabeth II stripped him of his HRH title.
