Thirteen years since gauge conversion, no daily train from Tenkasi to Chennai
According to the Tenkasi District Rail Users Association, people used to travel on train (Nos. 111/112 ) which was operated between Chennai Egmore and Sengottai/Tenkasi. The service, which was first operated in 1902 was stopped in the late 1980s.
President of the association R Pandiaraja recently submitted a petition Southern Railway officials, stating that the current tri-weekly super fast service is inadequate to cater to the needs and demanded a daily servicebetween Tambaram and Sengottai via Virudhachalam, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Ambasamudram, Pavoorchatram and Tenkasi.
'There is no direct service to Chennai on Sundays and no return train from Chennai on Fridays. As a result, people are forced to rely on expensive private buses, paying up to Rs 2,000 or more per trip,' he said.
The association pointed out that operating a train via Pavoorchatram, Ambasamudram, and Tirunelveli is not only shorter for Chennai-bound passengers from Tenkasi and Tirunelveli but also provides an overnight link to Madurai, Virudhachalam and Tiruchy.
'The Tirunelveli-Tenkasi line, opened in phases between 1902 and 1903, runs via Cheranmahadevi, Kallidaikurichi, Ambasamudram, Kadayam, and Pavoorchatram at the scenic foothills of the Western Ghats. In the 1997-98 Railway Budget, gauge conversion of the 357-km Kollam-Tirunelveli-Thiruchendur and Tenkasi-Virudhunagar routes was sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 712 crore. The Tirunelveli-Tenkasi section was closed for conversion in December 2008 and reopened in September 2012,' said Pandiraja.
K Jegan, secretary of the association, said, 'Despite completion of full electrification and track upgrades enabling speed up to 110 kmph, a daily express train to the State capital is yet to be realised. Tatkal quota on Chennai-bound trains like Nellai, Pothigai, Ananthapuri, Kanniyakumari, and Senthur expresses get booked within minutes. More than 300 people remain on waiting list regularly.'
When contacted, Madurai Divisional Railway Manager Sharad Srivastava said, 'The proposal for a daily train in the route is under process. The decision has to be taken at the top level.'

New rly under bridge to ease traffic at Darrah Nullah
Jaipur: Relief is finally in sight for commuters who endured years of traffic congestion at Darrah Nullah on the Kota–Jhalawar National Highway (NH-52). The Central govt granted administrative and financial approval for the construction of a new Railway Under Bridge (RUB) near Arch Bridge No. 148, between Kanwarpura and Darrah railway stations. The project, estimated to cost Rs 9.98 crore, will be executed by the West Central Railway as a deposit work. The RUB will be constructed at KM 297.7 on NH-52 and is expected to significantly ease traffic flow between Kota and Jhalawar. Construction is scheduled to begin shortly, with targeted completion within stipulated timeframe. The eight-km stretch through Darrah Nullah — a narrow, single-lane passage wedged between the broader four-lane highway — long posed a serious threat to commuters, with frequent accidents, prolonged traffic jams, and seasonal waterlogging. Rajesh Soni, a frequent traveller, said, "Traffic on this route increased as it connects Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Heavy vehicle movement is common, and traffic jams lasting up to 12 hours have been reported here." Despite the commencement of toll collection at Mandana and Bheed Mandi (Rs 165 and Rs 85, respectively), no structural improvements were made. Agencies including the NHAI, PWD, and the forest department continued shifting responsibility. Since the stretch falls within the Mukundra Tiger Reserve, the forest department raised objections to any major construction without proper clearance. A four-lane elevated road was earlier proposed but failed to gain approval .

Himachal nod to investment promotion council for attracting big money in tourism
Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh govt has approved the establishment of the Tourism Investment Promotion Council (TIPC) – a single-window mechanism for fast-tracking project approvals and providing comprehensive investor facilitation. The new council will serve as a dedicated platform to evaluate and approve tourism projects with an investment of Rs 50 crore and above. The TIPC will be chaired by the chief minister and supported by an investment promotion cell within the department of tourism, stated a govt release. The council is aimed at creating an investor-friendly ecosystem and will be governed by the principles of minimum regulation, maximum facilitation, and time-bound decision-making. The state govt aims to issue standardised formats for document submissions across departments such as PWD, pollution control board, revenue, town and country planning, fire services, and jal shakti, to ensure uniformity and efficiency, read the release. The new council's key feature is the creation of a proactive system wherein the onus of project preparedness will rest with the govt, thereby significantly reducing entry barriers for prospective investors in the state. Furthermore, except in cases involving statutory approvals, like under the transfer of agriculture land for non-agriculture purposes or environmental clearances, projects will be deemed approved if not cleared within the stipulated time frame, the govt mentioned.

MP Waje seeks immigration checkpoint at Nashik airport
Nashik: Nashik MP Rajabhau Waje recently met with Union aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu to push for significant developments at Nashik airport ahead of the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2026-2028. Waje submitted a memorandum requesting an immigration checkpoint and a major airport expansion to handle the expected influx of devotees. The proposed expansion includes constructing a new terminal building with seating for 1,000 passengers, developing new taxiways, and increasing the number of aircraft parking bays. Waje also called for the construction of separate helipads at the airport, in Nashik city, and in Trimbakeshwar to manage the massive crowd. Naidu has assured Waje that he would look into these requests. Additionally, Waje proposed that the airport be named after Yashwantrao Chavan, Maharashtra's first chief minister who was instrumental in bringing the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) unit to Nashik. Currently, the Nashik-Delhi flight has been reduced from daily to four days a week. This service should be made daily again.
