BEST BET
FIRE TRIBE (Race 5 No. 6 – $4.40)
Fire Tribe chased well in a pleasing first-up effort at Benalla. He'll be much fitter for that and should be harder to hold out.
â â â â â
NEXT BEST
KNOBELAS (Race 4 No. 14 – $5.50)
The New Zealand-bred filly has had a bit of time leading up to her debut and has gone well at the jumpouts. She could fire on debut.
FLITGROVE (Race 8 No. 6 – $5)
Flitgrove has raced handy and been thereabouts at both runs this time in. She's down in class and will be harder to run down.
â â â â â
VALUE BET
HOT ONE (Race 2 No. 8 – $17)

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. News Corp form analyst Chris Vernuccio takes a look at the Aurie's Star meeting at Flemington on Saturday. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ BEST BET DE BERGERAC (R3 No.6): De Bergerac won well at Sale first-up then placed twice behind in-form sprinter La Fracas at Sandown and Flemington, the most recent run he was nabbed late at the track and distance. There was a lot of merit in that performance after he jumped awkwardly and was left exposed at the front with 250m left. Drops back from a BM84 to a BM78. NEXT BEST ZOU SENSATION (R6 No.8): Zou Sensation is flying this prep and going for three wins in a row. The improving six-year-old won for the first time over 1400m last start, and looks well placed again in another Benchmark 100 race. VALUE BET AZTEC STATE (R5 No.1): Antez State had to concede from the wide barrier at Caulfield when second-up off a long break, and should be primed to win again third-up here stepping up to 2000m. LAY OF THE DAY FEDERER (R5 No.14): Federer hasn't won in nearly a year and looks a risk around that $2.40 price. He's stepping up to 2000m for the first time and could get cluttered up jumping from barrier two. THE JOCKEY BLAKE SHINN Metro premiership winner Blake Shinn can start the new season with a few winners at Headquarters. EXIT (R1 No.4 – $2.05), OUR COUVER (R3 No.13 – $12), FEDERER (R5 No.14 – $2.35), FORTUNATE KISS (R6 No.6 – $9.50), PUDDING (R8 No.8 – $13), STYLISH (R9 No.1 – $3.90). NRL greats use the same word for Herbie Farnworth's horror injury
Dolphins superstar Herbie Farnworth appeared to suffer a horrific injury on Friday night in a huge blow to his NRL club and potentially his country. The 25-year-old showed his class early in the clash with the Warriors in Auckland when he beat two defenders to cross the line and open the scoring in just the fourth minute for his 12th try of the season (see below). FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1. But just minutes later, Farnworth's sensational season may have come to a shuddering halt. With the score locked at 6-6 in the 18th minute, Farnworth received a ball from Kodi Nikorima on his own 10 metre line. With seemingly nothing on, the Englishman produced a huge step off his right and then his left to beat two attempted tackles before putting on the afterburners and accelerating into open space. Watch the injury in the video player above A try appeared there for the taking when Farnworth suddenly slammed on the brakes before falling to the turf and grabbing for his left hamstring. 'Now Farnworth has done it again, he's unstoppable. (Hamiso) Tabuai-Fidow is there … Farnworth has done an injury!' Warren Smith said on Fox League. 'He's torn a hamstring. Can you believe that? This is potentially devastating for not just this game, but the Dolphins' season. He's gone. 'The old sniper got him in fresh air. He ran past (Samuel) Healey like he wasn't there … he's in about fourth gear and then boom, it just goes as quickly as that.' Co-commentator Michael Ennis then said: 'Oh this is devastating for the Dolphins. Exactly what Farnworth displayed there is what he's done all season for the Dolphins. 'Nothing on, set going nowhere, a bit of individual brilliance and class and incredible athleticism. 'And Farnworth, this close to the finals, this is a huge blow for them.' Smith replied: 'He's done a hammy as cold as you like. 'On a night when Kodi Nikorima returns from the one he did against the Rabbitohs back in round 17, they lose another of their stars.' A short time later, Farnworth was seen limping to the sheds, with Smith saying: 'That is a sad sight as he walks up the tunnel. 'His night over, potentially, depending on the severity of it and how they finish, it could be season over for Herbie Farnworth.' The Dolphins are sitting in eighth place on the NRL ladder and desperate to play finals for the first time in their short history. It will be a much tougher task without Farnworth, whose 12th try took him to equal sixth on the tryscoring charts for the season. 'Not just one of the stars, of the Dolphins but one of the genuine superstars of the NRL,' compatriot James Graham said at halftime. 'I think everybody just held their breath, it's absolutely devastating and adds to a growing injury list for the Redcliffe Dolphins. 'You've got to feel nothing but sorrow and all our thoughts go with Herbie. 'Hopefully it's not too bad but the fact he left the field needing assistance, it didn't look good.' Apart from the Dolphins' hopes of a first top-eight finish, Farnworth's England side is also hosting Australia in a three-Test Ashes series starting at Wembley in October. Plenty of fans and official accounts were taking that into account when they took to social media after the serious injury. Journalist Aaron Bower wrote on X: 'Not to alarm any England fans but Herbie Farnworth has just likely torn a hamstring playing for the Dolphins. '12 weeks to go so you'd think he'd be fit – but will he be match fit if that's his season?' The Castleford Tigers podcast tweeted: 'The sniper's got Herbie Farnworth … Just torn a hamstring playing for the Dolphins. Let's hope he's back and in good nick before the Aussies arrive at Wembley.' The NRL Allstars Podcast said: 'Terrible news for Herbie Farnworth with what looked like a severe hamstring injury. Helped from the field in what could be season ending.' League Unlimited stated: 'Massive blow! Herbie Farnworth looks like he has done his hamstring and has gone straight up the tunnel!' Another fan wrote: 'Pretty sure Herbie Farnworth just blew his hamstring and put himself out of the Ashes. English Rugby League just cannot catch a single break at the minute.' Farnworth will get scans when the Dolphins return to Queensland, but it was reported as a 'very bad hamstring' on Fox League.

Horse racing tips: Flemington best bets and quaddie analysis for Saturday, August 2, 2025
News Corp form analyst Gilbert Gardiner gives his $200 betting strategy and detailed quaddie selections at Flemington on Saturday. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ FOUR-PLAY: $200 BETTING STRATEGY RACE 1: 3YO BENCHMARK 70 (1410m) $50 win EXIT (4) at $2 Short enough in a small field but won with authority last start at Sandown. Champion jockey Blake Shinn has stuck with the three-year-old Bivouac filly, who could be aimed at much richer targets in the spring. She toyed with opposition last start, sat off them and bolted clear to win by 1¼ lengths. Respect CROSSBOW (2) coming down from Sydney after being runner-up the past two starts. RACE 3: BENCHMARK 74 (1200m) $50 win DE BERGERAC (6) at $3.30 Did everything but win last start at Flemington, when collared late by the surging La Fracas. The five-year-old Zoustar gelding, trained by Grahame Begg, could more than make amend here down in grade. Carried weight well in the past, so going from 52.5kg in stronger grade to 58kg on Saturday (after 2kg claim for apprentice Tom Prebble) should not pose an issue. De Bergerac won with 61kg fresh then placed third behind La Fracas two back with 59.5kg. Include SHAIME (14) in exotics. RACE 5: BENCHMARK 78 (2000m) $25 each-way AZTEC STATE (1) at $5.50/$1.95 Super win first-up at Sandown after a long break, produced a three-length romp. Entitled to experience a case of second-up blues last start but raced well again, set a task back in the field but worked home nicely to run fifth in a 1700m Benchmark 84. Down in class, up in distance looks an ideal recipe for success with rising star Tasmanian apprentice jockey Jackson Radley in the saddle. Wary of favourite FEDERER (14). RACE 7: GROUP 3 AURIE'S STAR HANDICAP (1200m) $50 win SPLASH BACK (11) at $2.50 Produced arguably the most visually impressive performance of the winter carnival, with an astonishing turn of foot to win last start at Flemington. Going for three on the bounce after a brilliant first-up win at Caulfield and more than capable. Quiet jumpout between Flemington runs has Splash Back primed to make a statement on Saturday. First time down the straight but the five-year-old mare looks more than capable. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ QUADZILLA LEG 1 - RACE 6 ZOU SENSATION (8) showed rivals a clean pair of plate last start at Caulfield and runner-up El Rocko has won since to frank the form line. The six-year-old gelding could be aimed up at a Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) in the spring so this should be a nice audition. RUN HARRY RUN (4) has raced solidly without much success, touched off two back. MUNHAMEK (2) a definite threat. 1ST LEG 2, 4, 8 LEG 2 - RACE 7 SPLASH BACK (11) the one to beat bar none. Going for a hat-trick of wins for the campaign and more to give going forward. First look at the straight but the mare should be too good. Sydney raider KING OF ROSEAU (10) has raced well up north and must be respected. MARBLE NINE (2) has sights on a double hat-trick and must also be included. Will be up on speed and hard to run down. 2ND LEG 2, 10, 11 LEG - RACE 8 TOO DARN DISCREET (15) has won second-up previously and could do so again. Talented mare with plenty of upside. HARD TO CROSS (3) has slipped under the radar potentially, has yet to trouble scorer at Flemington but six-time 1600m winner. Include. ONE LONG DAY (11) has been a model of consistency, won four of nine and placed on four occasions. OUTTA COMPTON (5) and EL SOLEADO (1) around the mark again. 3RD LEG 1, 3, 5, 11, 15 LEG 4 - RACE 9 ILLYIVY (9) is due to run second based on pattern – 2121 – the past four starts but mare in form and racing in great heart, must be seriously considered a winning chance. STYLISH (1) has also raced well this campaign and now has Blake Shinn engaged to ride, the champion jockey piloted the mare in a recent jumpout. VIENNA VIXEN (7) next best. FOURTH LEG 1, 7, 9 COST $100 FOR 74% SKINNY QUADDIE Start with MUNHAMEK (2) and ZOU SENSATION (8). In the second leg take SPLASH BACK (11) one out. Then in the third leg take HARD TO CROSS (3), ONE LONG DAY (11) and TOO DARN DISCREET (15). Come home with STYLISH (1) and ILLYIVY (9). 1ST LEG: 2, 8 3ND LEG: 11 3RD LEG: 3, 11, 15 4TH LEG: 1, 9 COST $100 FOR 833% Read related topics: News Corporation Gilbert Gardiner Sports reporter Gilbert Gardiner is a sports reporter for the Herald Sun and Sunday Herald Sun. @gilbertgardiner Gilbert Gardiner
