Pensacola donates $100K to help homeless youths
The program addresses the rising number of homeless youths and provides resources to help them become independent.
In Escambia County, the Florida Department of Education reported 1,913 homeless youths during the last school year, an 11% increase since last year.
'This funding allows CHS to expand its services and create long-term solutions for young local people experiencing homelessness,' said Leah Harrison, the society's executive director.
The Hand Up for Youth Program focuses on two key areas: supportive permanent housing for 18- to 23-year-olds and host homes for 16- to 17-year-olds.
This first program provides financial assistance for up to six months of rent, up to 18 months of case management, and a transition plan to help achieve independence. The second program recruits and supports host families to provide safe, short-term housing.
'Solving homelessness isn't a one-size-fits-all problem, and there are many facets to consider,' Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. 'Our partnership with the Children's Home Society of Florida reflects the city's commitment to exploring diverse solutions, including addressing the needs of our area's 'invisible youth.'
'To improve our residents' quality of life and reduce homelessness, we need local community leaders, businesses, and charities to unite for a real chance at making lasting change.'

Mobile apartment complex overrun with trash and critters
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) —Garbage piling up, safety hazards, and wildlife roaming the grounds have all become commonplace, a tenant from the Crossings at Pinebrook says. Residents wake up to find Jubilee in Fairhope Residents say their complaints have been ignored, but News 5 was able to get some answers. Management blames the problem on a broken trash compactor and says they are working to resolve the problem. One resident who did not want her name or face shown said the trash problem is out of control. 'Mattresses, tires, like bags of like, seafood boils everywhere. So it smells, it smells bad, but think about it. It's so hot, and then you've got trash down in the sun,' she said. She said the garbage is also attracting some unwanted visitors around the apartment. 'We've had vultures, raccoons, possums. People think I'm joking, I say, no, no. They literally fly over the trash. This isn't a zoo,' she explained. While the area by the trash compactor has the largest amount of garbage, this resident said it's not her only concern, as there are a number of other trash bags, littered items, and food scattered throughout the complex. 'You see how filthy this is? I hate to say it, but this is a good day for this apartment,' she said. The garbage isn't the only complaint she's had that's gone unaddressed by the apartment. There's a number of safety issues including downed stop signs, huge potholes, and exposed wires throughout the complex. 'There's supposed to be a stop sign right there. And this is a safety issue because, again, not just kids, but people walk through here all the time,' she continued. Residents say they just want basic upkeep before conditions get any worse. Foshee Residential is the management company for the Crossings at Pinebrook. A spokesperson shared a message with us that was sent to residents today. 'We understand that the recent issues with the trash collection have been frustrating for everyone, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused,' the statement read. Mobile's Alabama Task Force 1 search and rescue team deployed to Texas
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey sent a search and rescue team, including members of Mobile Fire Rescue, to Texas to assist in rescue and recovery efforts on Thursday. Ivey's office, the state is sending a 40-person team that includes Alabama Task Force 1 from Mobile, the Tuscaloosa Fire Department and the Saraland Fire Department. The team includes members from different disciplines, including rescue, canine search, medical, hazmat, technical search and communications, according to the release. That multi-discipline tactic allows them to conduct search and rescue in all hazards, to include locating, accessing, medically stabilizing and extricating survivors from affected structures and areas, the release said. 'Search and rescue remains the goal, and Alabama is going to do all we can to lend a helping hand to Texas,' Gov. Ivey said. Gov. Ivey spoke on the connection to the devastating floods in Texas, in the loss of Alabama residents, and some Alabama residents still missing. 'We are heartbroken in Alabama and have lost two of our own,' she said. 'I pray for Sarah Marsh's family as they navigate the unimaginable loss of their precious daughter. My prayers are also with the Santanas as they grieve the loss of Camille and are still searching for three members of their family. Truly, we are all grieving alongside these Alabamians, as well as those in Texas and across our country.' Gov. Ivey said she was glad Alabama had the resources and trained people to assist in this tragedy. 'I am grateful to all those who are part of the search and rescue mission, and I pray for their safety and for the success of their mission,' she said. 'Y'all pray for Texas.' School Districts in Miami Florida school districts are divided by county. All residents of the Miami metro area are zoned in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. As the third-largest school district in the country, M-DCPS serves over 330,000 students every year. Overall, the Florida Department of Education gave M-DCPS a grade of 'A' for the last three years. Because M-DCPS is such a large district, its schools are divided into three regions: North, Central and South. Each region has its own superintendent and geographical area to support.
