Prince Andrew avoids public appearances after Virginia Giuffre death

The National28-04-2025
The Duke of York, who was accused of seriously sexually assaulting Ms Giuffre in the early 2000s, has kept a low profile following the announcement of her death by suicide last Friday.
Prince Andrew has always denied the allegations regarding his behaviour towards Ms Giuffre.

The royal missed his 'regular Saturday morning horse ride' as the news broke this weekend, and was briefly spotted with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson on Sunday before returning to his Royal Lodge mansion.
The royal outcast will no longer attend next weekend's 80th VE Day commemorations alongside the rest of the family despite joining them publicly for Easter Sunday celebrations.
Ms Giuffre first publicly accused the prince of abuse in 2019, an allegation Andrew and the rest of the royal family still vehemently denies, and later filed a lawsuit which was settled out of court in 2022.
She claimed she was trafficked to him by paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein when she was 17, and that three occasions of sexual abuse took place across London, New York and the Caribbean.
Following the settlement, the prince promised in a statement he'd 'demonstrate his regret for his association' with Epstein by supporting organisations targeting the 'evils of sex trafficking,' including the late Ms Giuffre's organisation SOAR, though there have never been any reports of Andrew doing so other than the undisclosed sum paid obligatorily to Giuffre.

Epstein's accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, reportedly instructed Ms Giuffre to 'do for him [Prince Andrew] what you do for Jeffrey' following the pair's initial meeting at London's Club Tramp, where then-17-year-old Giuffre was allegedly plied with alcohol.
Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment in 2022 for her role in facilitating Epstein's trafficking and abuse ring, whilst Epstein died by suicide in a jail cell in 2019.
According to The Sun, insiders believe Andrew was plotting a return to royal life which no longer looks viable, given his silence on Giuffre's suicide and inability to prove her as an unreliable witness.

Madeleine Smith, daughter of a successful Glasgow merchant – one with a country house too – was charged with murdering her lover, Emile L'Angelier, a French exile, ten years older than her and working as a clerk in a Glasgow office. There was no doubt that they were or had been lovers. Madeline, however, had been engaged to a young man approved of by her father. Emile had threatened to send Madeleine's love letters to her father, so there was clear evidence of motive. Lesley McDowell Moreover, Madeline had bought arsenic for medicinal purposes and her lover was killed by arsenic poisoning. But there was no evidence of how Madeline could have fed Emile the poison. The inability to prove this saved her. The Jury found the case 'not proven', that distinctive verdict open to Scots juries which in effect often means 'we're pretty sure you did it, but it hasn't been proved' or simply 'go away and don't do it again.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Lesley McDowell, in this fine novel, comes up with a plausible explanation of how the arsenic might have been introduced into Emile's body. She has no doubt that Madeline was guilty, yet feels for her. Madeleine is indeed the heroine here. In fact, the Glasgow scenes are only part of the story, and McDowell even denies herself the dramatic opportunities offered by the trial, restricting this to a few things said by the lawyers. She is at least as interested in what happened next, and indeed much later, for the novel opens with a brash young American forcing himself onto a nonagenarian Mrs Sheehy, claiming to be a friend of her granddaughter. The American, Harry, has come from Hollywood, where the silent movies are about to become talkies. He has identified the old woman as the infamous Madeleine – which she denies, not wishing her granddaughter and other younger members of her family to know her dark secret. Indeed, Madeleine has come a long way from Glasgow. For some years she moved successfully in London society, but in America her life has been more modest. Her past is to be forgotten, and she is now a respectable old lady. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The American bullies her nastily, however, and she is also disturbed by a murder trial in New York in which she sees an accused woman as a victim. It is part of McDowell's skill and understanding of human nature to make the very old Madeleine seem a sympathetic heroine, even though there is little doubt that a lifetime ago she murdered her French lover. It's an enthralling novel, a beautifully organised tale in which McDowell shifts the perspective with great skill. She has been living with this story for a long time, revealing that ten years ago she was planning to collaborate with that finely imaginative novelist Emma Tennant in a version of Madeleine's story. Tennant's death made this impossible, but the finished article is a book that Tennant would surely have admired. It is certainly thoroughly enjoyable – a remarkably intelligent and at times very moving fictionalisation of an extraordinary life.

He had been due to stand trial, but instead pleaded guilty to a total of 12 charges, including raping both victims. The crimes occurred in a number of locations including Gourock in Inverclyde between 2015 and 2022. James, of Fort William in the Highlands, raped the child which also involved him taking photos and making video recordings of attacks. He further abused her while she was asleep. The court heard James even concealed cameras in rooms capturing the unwitting youngster as she was getting dressed. The woman meantime was the victim of a similar horror ordeal. Judge David Young KC said a background assessment had concluded James was a "dangerous individual" who continued to pose a risk to others. He told James: "Both victims have lodged impact statements - it is plain your actions had an effect on their lives which can be described as devastating. "The girl spoke of closing down, feeling helpless and hopeless. The ability to form relationships has been fractured. "The woman has had her life torn apart. "You accept the offences against the child, but are not able to explain the behaviour. "You report that she never said 'no', but this comment about a child raises concerns in itself. "Although you have pled guilty, you say the behaviour against the woman was consensual." James was further put on the sex offenders list. He has also been banned from approaching or contacting the victims - both for an indefinite period. James will also be supervised for a further four years on his release.
