EGPC & Petrobel Begin Production at Zohr 6 Gas Field

CairoScene20-06-2025

The Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and Petrobel have started production at the Zohr 6 field, targeting 40–50 million cubic feet of gas per day to help stabilise Egypt's energy supply.

The Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and Petrobel have begun natural gas production from the Zohr 6 field in the Mediterranean Sea, with initial output estimated between 40 and 50 million cubic feet per day starting in June. The new production comes as part of a broader strategy to increase domestic gas supply and reduce reliance on imports, particularly for electricity generation and industrial consumption. The Zohr 6 field was prepared for operation following the arrival of a drilling vessel in January and the completion of key water leakage mitigation procedures, including chemical injection and well isolation measures designed to ensure production stability.Zohr remains central to Egypt's long-term energy strategy. Since the start of its development with Italian energy giant Eni, the field has attracted total investments of approximately USD 39 billion, with USD 13.5 billion specifically allocated to field development. Current production from the Zohr field ranges between 1.1 and 1.2 billion cubic feet per day, accounting for around 30% of Egypt's total natural gas output. The launch of Zohr 6 aligns with ongoing offshore exploration and drilling activity in the Mediterranean. Between July 2024 and May 2025, eight new wells were drilled and another eight evaluated across various offshore blocks. Five new gas discoveries were made during the current fiscal year, which are expected to feed into Egypt's medium-term energy planning. However, declining output from mature fields has prompted Egypt to import around 1.6 billion cubic feet of gas per day through LNG shipments and regional pipelines, currently meeting 25 to 30% of the country's overall gas demand. The new output from Zohr 6 is part of efforts to reduce that reliance and stabilise domestic energy availability.

EFG Hermes, an EFG Holding company and the leading investment bank in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), announced today that its investment banking division successfully completed its advisory on the USD 500 million initial public offering (IPO) of Specialized Medical Company (SMC), one of the leading healthcare providers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on the Main Market of the Saudi Exchange (Tadawul). This marks EFG Hermes' third IPO in the healthcare space in the past 12 months, further reinforcing its position as a trusted advisor across the region's most dynamic sectors. The company began trading today under the ticker 4019. Once operational, the new facilities are expected to more than double the Company's current capacity to approximately 1,276 beds and 770 outpatient clinics . EFG Hermes acted as a Joint Financial Advisor, Joint Bookrunner, and Joint Underwriter on the transaction . EFG Hermes has advised on six IPOs across the region year to date, including landmark transactions on Tadawul, the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, the Muscat Stock Exchange, and the Egyptian Exchange, underscoring its regional leadership in equity capital markets .

Zohr gas field output increases after well redrilling - Energy

Egypt's Zohr gas field has increased its natural gas output by 60 million cubic feet per day following the successful redrilling of the Zohr-6 well, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced on Friday. The redrilling was carried out using the deepwater drilling rig "Saipem 10000," after it returned to the Zohr gas field in January to resume operations per the approved development plan. Following the completion of Zohr-6, the rig carried out its scheduled tasks. It began drilling at the "Zohr-13" well, which engineering studies estimate will add 55 million cubic feet of gas per day. The drilling operations mark a significant step toward strengthening the natural gas supply system. They will further enhance domestic production levels and confirm earlier predictions by the Ministry of Petroleum. Furthermore, these efforts align with the ministry's strategy to boost domestic production, ensure energy availability, and provide petroleum products to various sectors while meeting citizens' needs. In a statement, the ministry further highlighted its successful partnership with Italian company Eni, operator of the Zohr Field, resulting in the implementation of previously agreed development plans. It highlighted the Egyptian government's full support of its operations to encourage investment in the petroleum sector, maximise domestic output, and ensure energy security and resource sustainability.
