M&S says it's ‘thigh guy summer', but are you brave enough to bare your legs?

With Wimbledon in full swing, you don't have to look far to see a surfeit of men in shorts. Only this summer, shorts aren't solely contained within the grassy environs of Centre Court.
Whether they've been influenced by Carlos Alcaraz or Harry Styles, more men than seems probable have decided that shorts are the new black, the new jeans and the new must-buy, even if they last picked up a tennis racket in primary school.
So prevalent is the look that Marks & Spencer has even given it a name. According to the high street retailer, it's going to be a 'thigh guy summer'. Given we've already had a 'hot girl summer', a 'tomato girl summer' and a ' Brat summer ', perhaps it's only fair that men are the focus of fashion's latest microtrend.
'From runways to city streets, men everywhere are embracing the rising hemlines of the 'thigh guy summer' trend – a bold return to short shorts that's redefining masculinity, confidence and comfort in menswear,' claims M&S.
'As temperatures climb, so do inseams, with fashion-forward men ditching knee-length chinos and cargos in favour of five-inch (and preferably shorter) cuts that deliver on both style and personality. No longer reserved for the gym and swimwear, today's short shorts are tailored, stylish and unapologetically thigh-baring.'
Improbable as this may seem to those who are married to their summer chinos and balk at baring an ankle, never mind a thigh or knee, M&S says it has the statistics to back its claims, citing a recent survey that found 66 per cent of men reported liking the 'short shorts' trend, while 76 per cent said they felt more body confident than ever before.
Data from Google echoes this, with searches for 'men's short shorts' up 138 per cent. On TikTok, meanwhile, the #shortshorts hashtag appears in 113,000 videos and counting.
'I'm very here for thigh guy summer, and think it's good that short shorts are becoming a staple in lots of guys' wardrobes – myself included,' says the stylist Peter Bevan.
'My go-to length is around the mid-thigh, and I'd suggest always going for a roomy fit – it should only be your legs on show, so absolutely avoid anything which could be described as 'revealing'.' He suggests following Paul Mescal's lead at Glastonbury and wearing cotton boxer shorts as outerwear, or opting for retro sports shorts teamed with a big shirt.

Adam Brown, co-founder of Orlebar Brown, believes the short short trend is part of a resurgence of interest in classic Fifties and Sixties styles, as seen in iconic films such as 1969's Easy Rider.
'It was a time when people had a much more romantic and carefree approach to life, especially on vacation,' he says. 'We've particularly noticed the trend on the beaches of southern France and Italy, as well as in the Hamptons and Miami.'
The brand's swim and day shorts now come in a variety of lengths, including shorter styles. Brown says that this summer's bestseller is a bold pink floral design adapted from artwork by the artist Sarah Graham.
Understandably, the short short look divides opinion. 'It's interesting they're so divisive,' says Bevan, who thinks the hotter weather could be fuelling the trend. 'People just need to get used to the idea of seeing guys' legs above the knee rather than thinking it's a big fashion statement, especially when it's over 30 degrees.'
Bevan doesn't believe there's an upper age limit for wearing shorter shorts.
'As with any shorts, the key is in the styling. If you're wearing them for a relaxed weekend look, go for sports shorts with a T-shirt. If you're dressing up, try tailored shorts and a polo shirt. If you wear them in an unconsidered way, though, they can easily look like they're not working. And then there's context to think about. They're not really appropriate for a formal event or for certain venues.'
Luke Jefferson Day, editor of menswear magazine Man About Town, has been wearing short shorts for years. 'It's all about fit, and making sure they aren't too tight or too short,' he counsels. 'I love them with loafers, trainers, even Crocs. A shorter short also tends to be more flattering on a man's leg. They're great for showing off your hard work in the gym.'
Which is all very well for gym buffs, cyclists and tennis players, but less encouraging for those whose main form of exercise is lifting a pint to their lips. Without doubt, short shorts are a flex: it's unlikely that Harry Styles, Paul Mescal and Alexander Skarsgård would be wearing them so readily if their legs weren't toned. At the recent menswear shows in Paris and Milan, the hottest accessory wasn't a Dior book tote but a highly honed quad.
So how do you get them? 'If you're aiming for that sharp, sculpted thigh look, focus on exercises like Bulgarian split squats, walking lunges, and step-ups – they target the quadriceps while also building overall leg shape and balance,' advises fitness coach Matt Kendrick, founder of MK Health. 'For real definition, consistency is key, along with keeping body fat low through smart nutrition and cardio. Training legs split between quadriceps, calves and hamstrings twice a week is a solid starting point.'
Or you could stick to wearing chinos.

Music fans recall watching Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium 40 years on

Live Aid revellers have recalled what it was like to watch the historic gig at Wembley Stadium, 40 years on. The London venue has collated stories from stars of the show, staff and fans in an online retrospective titled Live Aid 40 Memories. Advertisement The concerts, held in London and Philadelphia, took place on July 13th, 1985 and were organised by musicians Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for the Ethiopian famine. The late Diana, Princess of Wales and the King, then Prince of Wales, attended the gig in London, which included performances from Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Queen, Mick Jagger and Tina Turner. Lucy Swanson, daughter of the late BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale, was 17 when she went to the gig with her friend Kate Wolfe. 'I was 17. It was a time in our lives where everyone listened to the same radio stations, the same bands,' she said. Advertisement 'Everyone watched Top Of The Pops. We had to go to Live Aid. As soon as it was announced it was the must-have ticket. 'Thankfully my mum was Annie Nightingale, a DJ on Radio 1 and out presenting Live Aid in Philadelphia on the same day. 'She bought us tickets to go – because everyone had to buy them. There were no freebies. 'There was a sense that every band was all singing for the same purpose. Advertisement 'The crowd was amazing and everyone was present, no mobile phones, no selfies, no photos, it was better, just living in the moment of looking at the stage, wondering who was next.' Vivien Harvey, who was a special constable on the day, only found out when she arrived that she would be given the task of looking after performers as they came on to the stage. 'We were on the coach on the way to the stadium when we were told where we would be situated for Live Aid,' she said. 'Some were told they'd be outside the stadium, and some would be inside. I got the long straw, and got allocated to stand on the stage door. Advertisement 'The crescendo, atmosphere, the buzz – very special. I saw lots of stars coming through the stage door including George Michael. But Freddie Mercury was the star of the show.' Vivien Harvey was a special constable on the day (Wembley Stadium/PA) Also recalling the event were Debbie Baxter, Henry Munro and Ann Sargeant, all of whom worked at the concert. Ms Baxter, who was on the hospitality reception desk, said: 'I have so much pride knowing I was part of such an iconic event. I don't think it really resonated with me until years later. 'It wasn't until the film premiere of Bohemian Rhapsody took place in 2018 that I noticed younger staff members saying 'I wished I worked on Live Aid.' Advertisement 'When I said that I had, they were amazed and were so excited to know what it was like. I realise now how lucky I was to have been part of such a historic event.' Live Aid 40 Memories also features a video interview with Geldof, who recalls getting a back massage from Bowie just moments before he went on stage.

Taylor Fritz 'torn apart' after comment about Wimbledon icon Novak Djokovic

Taylor Fritz was not a fan of the major backlash he received after joking about Novak Djokovic's absence from the US Open, as he was forced to clarify his comments Tennis icon Novak Djokovic 's fans were riled up when Taylor Fritz made a quip about the Serb's exclusion from the 2022 US Open. But the American swiftly hit back and highlighted his detractors clearly misunderstood his remarks. The Covid-19 pandemic was a significant concern back in the summer of 2022, which led to US regulations that barred non-citizens from competing without vaccination proof. This sidelined Djokovic from that year's Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows, much to the quiet relief of his competitors. ‌ Fritz was preparing for the season's final major when he cheekily addressed the situation. But his light-hearted advocacy for the event's organisers to let 'Nole' play, despite not being vaccinated, flew over the heads of many diehard Djokovic fans. ‌ The 27-year-old weighed in after clinching victory over Nick Kyrgios in the second round of the Cincinnati Open. And he noted the United States' Covid-19 protocols while acknowledging both sides of a very important argument at the time. "We're not the most Covid-safe country in general with how we are doing things," he told reporters (via Daily Express). "So it does seem like what's the harm of letting the best player in the world come play the US Open? "But at the same time, I don't know how I feel about making exceptions just for one person just because of who they are. So I see both sides of the argument. It's good for every player if Novak is not in the draw [smiles]." ‌ Not everyone was amused by those remarks, which sparked outrage among Djokovic's most loyal supporters. So much so that Fritz felt compelled to clarify his jest was purely in good fun and, if anything, intended as a compliment to his competitor. "Nothing new just me getting ripped for making a joke about Novak being better than everyone," he posted on X. "The issue with press transcripts is it's just raw text and it's not clear the manner in how things are said. What I jokingly said, felt like a compliment to Novak more than anything else." ‌ Both Djokovic and Fritz were ousted from the Wimbledon semi-finals on Friday by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, respectively. This leaves them eyeing this year's US Open as their final opportunity to clinch Grand Slam glory in 2025. Despite many of Djokovic's fans taking umbrage at Fritz's Covid comments, the 24-time major champion himself seemed unperturbed. This is evident as the pair have since reconnected, and there doesn't seem to be any lingering animosity between them. Fritz made a remarkably swift recovery in 2021 when he tore his meniscus at the French Open, underwent surgery, and then triumphed at Wimbledon just 20 days later. He disclosed last year that Djokovic had "reached out" to him for advice as he aimed to make his own speedy recovery from a similar injury. Fritz opened up about their 2024 conversation, revealing: "I told him what it was like for me. A lot of it comes down to the inflammation and how you react. "It's possible for Novak to play. It's the exact same thing that I had and I played. Obviously, I wasn't contending to win a title, I was just showing up to hopefully win a couple of rounds - but it is possible."
