'When my son was murdered, knife crime was still a shock - now it's just part of the news'

Yahoo2 days ago
It's been 11 years since Joshua Ribera was stabbed through the heart in a Birmingham nightclub. Back then in 2013, knife crime was still a huge shock, insists mum and vocal anti-knife crime campaigner Alison Cope.
"Now it's not a case of if, but when are you going to run the next headline? That's where we've come to. Now it's just part of the news."
Another week, another stabbing outside a college, another schoolboy bleeding out alone on the pavement.

Speaking from her Moseley home as part of our Deep Cuts investigation - which can be read in full below - Alison reflects on the relentless violence plaguing the city and the wider West Midlands.
Knife possession in the West Midlands has doubled since the pandemic, according to our stats, but it's fear that's driving more and more youngsters to carry weapons, Alison suggests.
Figures for the UK state it's around four per cent of people who carry knives - but depending on their age, schoolkids think it's more like 80 - 100 per cent.
"They think: 'There's all these scary people wearing Ballies, acting bad, I've seen a headline 'someone got stabbed on a bus', I'm just going to put a knife in my sock and pull it out if anyone tries to hurt me.'
"And then you end up with a situation that's so horrendous." For Alison, her son - a rapper widely known as Depzman -kissed her on the cheek and told her 'I love you'.
The next time she saw him he was dead - and she was identifying his body. She continues: "We're not seeing it getting any better at the moment.
"It's as if we're accepting the level of violence at the moment. I don't think we should ever accept it. We're not at war. It can never be ok and the ages, as we see, are getting younger - younger murderers, younger victims."
What's changed and why are we seeing such violence inflicted on our region's children? "What's shifted in the last six years or so is the social media element," she insists.
"You go to a school then, you'd explain it all and you'd be left with one or two kids who really needed to hear that message, now, 90 per cent do. It's really shifted now.
"The more they're exposed to, the harder it is to get the message across. My session has really stepped up and it's really to the point. It's really extreme.
"When I talk about losing Josh, I say even if there's a 1 per cent chance that what you put on your phone ultimately does make someone who does carry a knife want to come for you after school, come for you when they see you in the park, are you going to be ready for the consequence of lying on the floor bleeding out, thinking of your mum or dad's face as you pass away, are you really ready for that?
"Or there was a dad in Birmingham where a teenager had issues with a rival group, so if you're acting like the badman and causing trouble, and your parents clash outside school and you see your dad slashed across his jugular vein, who's fault is that, yours? So you can see them going 's***',
"Social media has got a huge role in all this."
"47 per cent of people being groomed are through Meta owned platforms, and some people are doing it through headsets, through gaming, through mobile phones and social media. When parents are made aware of that, they're absolutely gobsmacked.
"The problem is with phones if you're not aware is that you then see the level of sexual violence, stabbings without editing, totally inappropriate things, and we know that has an impact on the mindset of young people and they become totally desensitised.
"Every school you go to, it's getting harder and harder to get people to see this isn't acceptable. All of it plays a role in fuelling the negativity we're living in at the moment."
All the violence on social media and in films, games and more are all worsening the problem, slowly desensitising children to the violence. She added: "Squid Games, Top Boy, Supercell, so when you say, this behaviour is not ok?
"Don't film fights, don't run towards fights, don't all attack on the back of the bus, but they're still doing it, because we're not doing enough."

Oasis fans miss gig after fake ticket sales

Dozens of Oasis fans who believed they had bought a private box for Saturday's concert in Cardiff say they have paid hundreds of pounds for tickets they never received. Multiple victims told BBC Wales they were left "gutted" and "angry" after paying Pembrokeshire-based business owner David Gray for tickets which seemingly never existed. They allege Mr Gray may have left as many as 100 people without tickets. BBC Wales has made multiple attempts to contact Mr Gray, but he has been unavailable for comment. Dyfed-Powys Police said it was investigating reports of a ticket scam, but did not make direct reference to Mr Gray. Neil Stephens from Crumlin, Caerphilly, paid £500 for tickets for himself and his wife, who he said was "inconsolable". "My wife, Hannah, is literally the world's biggest Oasis fan," he said. "I had a call from my friend who said he knew somebody with a box and asked if we would be interested. "He said it was a gentleman called David Gray. He's a client of the Principality Stadium and has held many corporate events there. "I've got friends who'd been to the Foo Fighters and the rugby, all as a guest of Mr David Gray. The best pictures from Oasis' return in Cardiff Fans electric as Oasis kick off reunion tour in Cardiff Oasis kick off their comeback: The best they've been since the 90s "There were no alarm bells. There was no reason to disbelieve it, there really wasn't." Mr Stephens said after Mr Gray confirmed their tickets last summer, it was only about a week before the concert that concerns began to emerge. The day before the gig, Mr Stephens and his friend decided to drive to The Speculation Inn near Pembroke, a pub owned and run by Mr Gray's family, to confront him. "I introduced myself and he told me the issue was with his mobile phone, which he said was the phone which contained all of the tickets," said Mr Stephens. "He actually took a call during our time in the pub from a guy flying in from Gibraltar for the gig. "He said that he would meet us outside gate three at 4:30pm and he would sort it out." Mark Bonnici from Machen, Caerphilly, also said he had no reason not to trust Mr Gray, whom he said he had known for years. He paid £1,200 for four tickets and said the experience had left him feeling "sick". Mr Gray had previously offered him hospitality tickets for the rugby, which he went to without issues. When he asked him if he was interested in Oasis tickets, Mr Bonnici said yes and transferred the money. "He said his phone was playing up and he couldn't transfer the tickets," Mr Bonnici said. Like Mr Stephens, he was told to meet Mr Gray outside gate three of the stadium. "There was no sign of him and his phone has been switched off ever since," he said. Mr Stephens decided to call the hospitality account manager for the Principality Stadium on the Saturday morning, while on his way into Cardiff to try to find out whether his tickets were genuine. "He broke the rather unfortunate news that the booking didn't exist in his name," he said. The WRU has been asked whether or not Mr Gray has ever held a box at the Principality Stadium. "I was annoyed, my wife was inconsolable. She was so looking forward to this," said Mr Stephens. "As the day unfolded, it became very clear through a series of Facebook posts that not only did he sell 33 seats for the one box, he sold it over and over and over. "The last count as of this (Monday) morning was 87 tickets. A lot of very angry people". Mr Bonnici also said it only became clear many others had been affected after his daughter posted on social media and contacted hospitality at the Principality Stadium. Large groups of other people had been waiting for their tickets in the same location, he said. "I'm probably more disappointed than anything," he said. "This is someone I know, I've known for years." Mr Stephens claimed that after the unprecedented demand for Oasis tickets led to significant price rises last summer, Mr Gray increased the prices he was charging to between £900 and £1,000 per ticket. He said he believed that overall, fans had lost out to the tune of "tens and tens of thousands of pounds". "I think the biggest issue is, for all of these fans, they didn't get to see Oasis", he said. "And because it's sold out, they won't get to see Oasis. "It's more that than the money for me". Mr Stephens and his wife remain determined to get to an Oasis concert this year and have booked tickets to see the Gallagher brothers on the US leg of their tour in Los Angeles. "Hopefully these ones are genuine," he said. Oasis sale 'may have misled fans' says watchdog Has ticket row taken the shine off Oasis reunion?

Three injured in shooting at Boynton Beach ‘Peace in the Hood' event

Three women were injured in a shooting Saturday at a Boynton Beach park where hundreds of people gathered at an event meant to advocate against violence in the community. Boynton Beach Police received multiple calls about 8 p.m. about shots being fired into the crowd at Sara Sims Park, Chelsea Sanabia, a police department spokesperson, said in a statement Monday. Officers found one woman who was shot in her thigh, Sanabia said. Two other women who were shot arrived at hospitals on their own. Investigators said 'multiple rival gang members' shot at each other, putting people in the crossfire, including children. Multiple occupied and unoccupied cars were also shot, according to the police department. Several other people had minor injuries after the shooting and were treated at hospitals or at the park by Boynton Beach Fire Rescue, the police department said. All were expected to recover. About 500 people attended the 'Peace in the Hood' event at Sara Sims Park on Saturday evening, which was not sanctioned by the city. Last month, the organizer applied for a permit to host an event called 'Stop Violence Awareness' for 20 people, Sanabia said. The city's Recreation and Parks Department denied the permit within a week, refunded the deposit and notified the organizer. Detective have 'multiple persons of interest' but no one has been arrested as of Monday afternoon. The police department asks anyone with information to contact Det. Steele at SteeleS@ or 561-742-6148. This is a developing story, so check back for updates. Click here to have breaking news alerts sent directly to your inbox.

Local officers to remain in Brierley Hill as new home for police base announced

POLICE are set to remain in Brierley Hill after a new home for a police base in the area has been announced. Brierley Hill Police Station, which currently serves as the Dudley Police headquarters, has been listed for closure since 2018. The news of the closure of the station caused concern it would lead to a lack of police provision in the area, with the base being replaced by the new Castlegate Police Station in Dudley, which is currently under construction. However, on Friday (July 4) the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster, revealed that the Brierley Hill neighbourhood teams will remain in Brierley Hill, at a new permanent base at Cable Plaza near the Waterfront. The new site, half a mile from the current police station, will house two neighbourhood policing teams when Brierley Hill police station closes in the autumn. PCC Simon Foster said: 'I have been working hard to deliver on my pledge, that Dudley will have its own new police station and I am pleased to see the progress being made to deliver on my pledge. 'The new police station will be fit for 21st century policing, and it will become Dudley Police's Headquarters. 'It will be a base for the local neighbourhood policing teams, for response and it will have a front contact office that the public can attend, speak to a police officer and report crime. 'I am also pleased to announce, that we have secured a new police base for the Brierley Hill neighbourhood police teams, that will be fit for 21st century policing. 'I am committed to re-building community policing, to prevent and tackle crime and keep people, families, businesses and the local community safe and secure.' West Midlands Police Chief Constable Craig Guildford said: 'The geographic location of the new police station [in Dudley] will help us to respond in an efficient manner, while co-locating with the council at Cable Plaza in Brierley Hill is good news for the taxpayer and helps us build effective working relationships.' Chief Superintendent Anthony Tagg, the commander for Dudley local policing area, added: 'We'll be sad to leave the old Brierley Hill station but the reality is, the site is not fit for purpose and refurbishing it does not make economic sense. 'Our hard-working police officers deserve better and so do the victims and witnesses who come into the building. 'The new Castlegate site will have the latest victim care facilities and a new public contact office so that we can get the best possible evidence from people. 'Importantly, our new Brierley Hill base is in a fantastic location that strengthens joint working.'
