Nicaraguan exiles and the emotional value of objects

For many Nicaraguans forced to flee their country amid the repression of the Ortega-Murillo regime, each object they manage to take with them across the border represents a tangible connection to the past, an emotional anchor in the face of uprooting and, above all, a promise: to return someday.
San José, Costa Rica. This is the story of an exiled journalist and his collection of keys. He calls himself *Castro, in homage to the surname of an influential high school teacher in Managua who, upon discovering his talent for Spanish and oratory, suggested he study journalism.
Even before leaving, *Castro swore to himself that he would return, that he would open the door to his house, embrace his family and sit on the porch to play with his dog and greet neighbors under the shade of the Indian Laurels that he himself had planted ten years before.
He set off on a windy early morning in February 2022. He carried a change of clean clothes, three pieces of underwear, two pairs of balled-up socks, a blue and white scarf, a hand towel, bathing slippers, deodorant, toothpaste, a toothbrush and a bottle of aspirin. Everything fit, tightly, into a Totto school bag belonging to his teenage daughter.
In an inside pocket, five keys attached to a stainless steel Victorinox key ring. His house keys. His pride. His inheritance. The fruit of years of bank debt and of surviving on a journalist's salary. He knew every nail, every crack, every corner of that house that he had worked on with his own hands.
Each lock told a story: the street lock was opened by a key with traces of red paint; the gate by a key with two parallel notches; the main door by an elongated one with white spots. The other two, smaller, opened the inner gate and the garage lock.
He traveled the more than 200 kilometers from Managua to the border post of Las Manos, adjacent to Honduras, listening to the metallic jingle of the keys at the bottom of his backpack. Already on the other side, exhausted after dodging soldiers and police, he took them out and put them in his jeans pocket. From then on, that sound accompanied him for thousands of kilometers, until he settled in a county east of Los Angeles.
There, for the first time, he hung them on the key ring of his new home. And then he cried. He cried with the heartbreaking certainty that he might never wear them again.

Chronicle of everything in the suitcase
In November 2024, during a podcast workshop for exiled journalists which is part of the Casa para el Periodismo Libre project in Costa Rica, someone shared the story of a communicator who, upon fleeing the country, chose to take only one thing with him: a family photo kept inside a Bible. It was the last image, taken of him at Christmas 2021, showing him with his family.
Based on this testimony, other exiles were asked what objects they took with them and what those objects meant. The responses were poignant: keys, stuffed animals, boots, video cameras...each object carried a story of love, pain and memory.
Some names in this article have been changed by express request, to protect the families that remain in Nicaragua and continue to be targets of reprisals.
*Castro recalls the symbolic value of his keys jingling: "It was a promise I repeated to myself every day," he says, holding back tears.
*Lucia, a 14-year-old teenager who fled with her journalist mother, chose three stuffed animals from her childhood. She could not take her guitar, flute, nor her books or watercolors.
"She doesn't play with them anymore," said *Carmen, her mother. "She has them as if on an altar, among posters of her favorite singers. It's her way of remembering that she was happy, even though now she is far from home."
There is also Óscar Navarrete, a photographer for La Prensa, who still has the boots, backpack and hat he wore when he crossed the border. "Each print on my boots is a story of struggle," he says.
*Ana, a doctor and feminist activist, keeps intact the sneakers with which she was expelled by a patrol in Peñas Blancas, on the Costa Rican border. "I went to many marches with them. With them I will return," she says firmly.
The young poet and journalist José Cardoza brought with him a Kodak camera inherited from his grandfather. "I learned to communicate with that camera before I could speak. Today it connects me with the memory of my family," he shared.
And *Raul J. keeps a picture of the last Christmas spent with his grandparents, taken a month before leaving. Both passed away two years later. "It's painful, but essential not to forget," he said in a low voice, trying to contain himself.

Nobody leaves because they want to
On October 30, Linda Núñez, sociologist and coordinator of Education and Memory of the Human Rights Collective Nunca Más (Never Again), presented in San José the report Nadie se va porque quiere. Voces desde el exilio (Nobody leaves because they want to. Voices from exile), an investigation by Eduardo González Cueva and María Alicia Álvarez based on the testimonies of 40 people displaced by repression.
The study, supported by the Mesoamerican Women Human Rights Defenders Initiative (Iniciativa Mesoamericana de Defensoras de Derechos Humanos, in Spanish) and American Jewish World Service (AJWS), documents how the Nicaraguan regime's persecution has forced thousands to flee: activists, opponents, journalists, human rights defenders. The crackdown that followed the April 2018 protests was the tipping point.
More than 800,000 people have left the country. Some fled after death threats, others after arbitrary arrests or constant surveillance.
Of those interviewed, 45 per cent managed to barely prepare for their departure. The rest fled with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The experience of exile, the report points out, fractures life projects, separates families, destroys stability and leaves a wound that never heals.
The stories describe anguish, guilt, anxiety and post-traumatic stress. Many also face xenophobia and discrimination in their host countries, with no access to psychological support.
Even so, 87.5 per cent report that they dream of returning, despite knowing they will return to a different Nicaragua.
"This report documents crimes against humanity," said Núñez. "The Ortega-Murillo regime has destroyed not only individuals, but also their environments." Among the testimonies, one stands out: an exile keeps the key to his house as a symbol of hope. "Only the body passes, but the soul stays on the other side," said Núñez.

Sailboat and anchor
The objects that exiles carry are not only memories: they are sailboats that push them forward and anchors that tie them to what they were. This is how Mexican psychologist Perla Guerra explained it to *Castro when he asked her about the emotional meaning of his keys. "An object is a treasure if it gives you hope and comfort. If it causes you suffering, maybe you haven't healed enough," she told him.
Specialists agree that these objects help exiles process migratory mourning, maintain memories and reconstruct identities broken by exile. But they warn that excessive attachment can also hinder adaptation.
*Carmen, mother of *Lucia, received the recommendation to carefully observe how her daughter interacted with her stuffed animals.
"They can be a source of comfort, but if there is an inordinate attachment, you have to create an environment that gives her security without being trapped in the past," she was advised.
In December 2024, Mexican journalist Patricia Mayorga - displaced by violence in Chihuahua - shared her experience at a meeting on migration in San José. She asked attendees to take with them the objects they had carried in their exodus and to tell their stories.
Keys, backpacks, photos, amulets, books...were piled on the table, each with its emotional charge. "These objects," said Mayorga, "help to cope with the transition, but it is also necessary to learn to let go in order to heal."
She herselfhad filled her home in exile with memories of Chihuahua. This transformed her surroundings into a space of gratitude rather than nostalgia.
"I didn't make an altar to cry," she said. Instead, the exercise opened up a necessary debate: to what extent is it healthy to hold onto such objects? How do they influence our ability to heal?
*Castro was also there. He had returned from California to join his family in Costa Rica. He said that, with pain, he decided to send back to Nicaragua the keys he had been carrying since his first day of exile. The police had begun to harass his family and he feared for them. So, he handed over control of the house to relatives.
It was his way of coming full circle. To accept that he might not open that door again, but also to take one more step toward the reconstruction of his life. The metallic sound of the keys, which once accompanied him as a promise, is now just an echo that belongs to another life.

Risk mitigation, sustainable funding, more research: Findings from State of Media Development Report for the Asia-Pacific region suggest that media development actors need to step up efforts in this part of the world. International assistance has long been recognized as a crucial pillar supporting public interest media across the Asia-Pacific region. From empowering exiled journalists, to sustaining watchdog journalism in fragile democracies and conflict zones, donor aid often serves as the lifeline. However, recent research led by DW Akademie, based on the OECD's six principles for effective media support and covering countries from Afghanistan to the Philippines reveals that donor aid is sometimes fragmented, poorly coordinated, and even unintentionally harmful. A snapshot of progress: The six OECD principles across Asia Principle 1: Do no harm to public interest media (minimally fulfilled) Principle 2: Increase financial and other assistance (not fulfilled at all) Principle 3: Take a whole-of-system perspective (partially fulfilled) Principle 4: Local leadership and ownership (partially fulfilled) Principle 5: Improve coordination (partially fulfilled) Principle 6: Invest in knowledge, research and learning (minimally fulfilled) Principle 1: Ensure assistance does no harm The assessment reveals that in politically restrictive environments across much of the Asia/ Pacific region, international assistance has unintentionally put media development actors at risk of legal harassment, reputational harm, surveillance, and threats to their safety. For instance, a media development organization in Mongolia working with US donors faced accusations of leaking national secrets. Similarly, in India draconian foreign funding laws (such as the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act or FCRA) indirectly discourage media development actors. In Kazakhstan, a media development organization representative informed that they were confronted with politically motivated tax penalties and threats of a shutdown due to their association with international funders. Furthermore, donor logos and content oversight requirements — while designed for transparency and accountability — sometimes backfire by fueling accusations of foreign propaganda. This was mentioned by respondents from Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan. Despite these challenges, positive examples exist. In Mongolia, a media development organization adopted clear ethical funding policies refusing money from sources like tobacco companies to maintain editorial integrity. In Kazakhstan, a donor stepped in to cover politically motivated fines against an independent media outlet preventing its closure. Recommendations An important measure would be to integrate "do no harm" protocols into grant agreements avoiding visible donor branding in politically sensitive contexts and promoting ethical funding practices with mutual accountability between donors and local media to enhance safety, trust, and impact. Principle 2: Increase financial and other forms of support In much of the Asia-Pacific region, international assistance has unintentionally exposed media actors to legal risks, surveillance, and safety threats Image: Nasir Kachroo/NurPhoto/picture alliance Chronic underfunding is a pervasive challenge for public interest media and media development organizations across Asia. Most media development organizations subsist on short-term project grants that barely cover operational costs, forcing them into precarious financial positions that increase vulnerability to burnout and eventual closure. Donors typically prioritize project-based funding tied to narrowly defined deliverables leaving little room for core expenses like salaries, rent, or capacity building. Furthermore, much of the funding flows into urban and dominant-language media, sidelining rural, minority-language, and hyper-local outlets that serve marginalized communities. This fragmentation extends to exile media which are additionally confronted by legal and financial barriers in accessing aid. Many donors also treat the media primarily as an instrument to advance other development goals rather than as a sector warranting direct, sustained investment. This mindset hampers funding for policy advocacy, legal reform, and organizational sustainability. A good practice in financial sustainability comes from the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) which serves as a bright spot by generating 80–85% of its revenue internally through membership fees, conferences, and capacity building programs. Recommendations Donors are called upon to shift their support to long-term, core funding, strengthening local revenue generation, and prioritizing marginalized, women-led, and exile media to ensure the sustainability of public interest media in Asia. Principle 3: Take a holistic approach to the information environment In Myanmar, inclusive strategies are increasingly supporting women-led, minority, and exile media Image: Olaf Schülke/picture alliance Media ecosystems in Asia-Pacific are diverse and interconnected yet donor programs often remain fragmented and urban-centric. Research shows donor assessments typically focus on capital cities, neglecting community radio, rural outlets, and minority-language media. As a Nepali expert noted, "You can't understand the media system if you only talk to NGOs in the capital." Critical issues like algorithmic bias, AI-generated misinformation, and digital surveillance remain underexplored. Donor strategies seldom integrate regulation, digital literacy, or policy reform, despite their growing importance for sustainable media development. In Nepal, India, and Afghanistan, locally led diagnostics are informing programming while in Pakistan and Myanmar, inclusive strategies now support women-led, minority, and exile media — marking notable good practices. Recommendations Comprehensive ecosystem diagnostics that capture diverse political, social, and technological contexts should be funded. They should integrate media literacy, digital regulation, and policy reform into media support and address digital risks like algorithmic bias and surveillance through holistic strategies. Principle 4: Strengthen local leadership and ownership Research shows donor assessments typically focus on capital cities, neglecting community radio, rural outlets, and minority-language media Image: Matthias Tödt/dpa/picture alliance In many countries in the Asia-Pacific region, international donors tend to control strategy and funding sidelining local media groups and treating them as subcontractors. Strict eligibility criteria, language barriers, and complex procedures exclude grassroots organizations. Local actors in Nepal, Myanmar, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan argue that most funding goes to international NGOs, despite local groups being better suited for impact. A South Asian media leader emphasized the need to "listen to the people they are trying to help." The research brings in positive examples including AMU TV run by Afghan journalists in exile, Nepal's community radio networks with participatory governance, and diaspora and minority-led media houses in Myanmar shaping editorial agendas rooted in their communities. Recommendation Direct funding to local and diaspora-led media should be prioritized using participatory design in funding decisions and simplifying and supporting grant processes to increase accessibility for grassroots organizations. Principle 5: Improve coordination among donors and development actors The research found that coordination across donors tends to be reactive, crisis-driven, and fragmented. Emergency situations—such as the fall of Kabul or Myanmar's military crackdown — catalyze rapid collaboration, but these are exceptions rather than the norm. Most of the time, overlapping funding cycles, inconsistent messaging, and duplicated efforts among media development organizations is prevalent. Poor data sharing, weak joint planning, and complex administrative requirements are reported by the key informants. It is important to note that coordination mechanisms rarely include local actors or emerging media such as digital creators and youth networks. Recommendations Country-level coordination groups should be created for donors, promoting information sharing, and aligning media support with broader governance and human rights efforts to enhance collaboration and impact. Principle 6: Invest in learning and innovation through research Investment in learning and research holds significant promise but remains chronically underfunded. While local actors are deeply committed to peer-learning, safety research, and analyzing digital threats, donor funding for such activities is inconsistent and insufficient. If there are research efforts, they tend to be informal, short-term, and heavily reliant on donor funding. Organizations in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Nepal and other countries demonstrate strong commitments to monitoring, evaluation, and adaptive learning despite challenging conditions. South-South knowledge exchange models, such as AMIC's in the Philippines embed evaluation into programming and stimulate critical conversations on media issues. Recommendations Media development professionals across Asia call for more evidence-based, locally produced knowledge to guide programming and policy. They also emphasize journalism education to integrate emerging challenges like AI, misinformation, and changing audience behavior. Leftist Leaders Gather In Chile With Democracy 'Under Threat'

The leftist leaders of Spain and four South American nations met in Chile on Monday to appeal for unity in the face of US protectionism and a rise in extremism worldwide. They gathered under the motto "democracy always," against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's expanding tariff war and America's worsening ties with several erstwhile allies. "Today, in many parts of the world, democracy is under threat," Chilean President Gabriel Boric said as he opened the summit with counterparts Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, Gustavo Petro of Colombia, Uruguay's Yamandu Orsi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. He blamed "disinformation, extremism of all kinds, the advance of hatred, corruption, the concentration of power and inequality." Boric said the Santiago summit would discuss ways "to strengthen our democracies and multilateralism," with proposals to be presented at a UN General Assembly meeting in New York in September. "Defending truth, defending science, and opposing deception... must also be part of our debate," said the Chilean leader. The meeting came amid rising tensions between Trump and leftist leaders worldwide. His current focus is on Brazil, where right-wing ally Jair Bolsonaro is on trial for allegedly plotting a coup against Lula. The Brazilian president last week decried "unacceptable blackmail" after Trump threatened 50 percent tariffs in part over the trial, which the US leader labeled a "witch hunt." Spain's Sanchez told Monday's meeting that: "Our societies face a real threat led by a coalition of interests between oligarchs and the far-right" -- a coalition of "hatred and lies that is advancing dangerously." Lula, for his part, said the leaders present in Santiago agreed on "the need to regulate digital platforms and combat disinformation." The topic is also at the heart of Brazil's ongoing clash with Trump's administration, which has targeted a judge who is involved in Bolsonaro's coup trial and has made a number of rulings against platforms and individuals spreading falsehoods on line. Political analyst Michael Shifter of the Inter-American Dialogue think tank said meetings like the one in Santiago were useful for like-minded politicians to "discuss how to navigate an increasingly complex and turbulent world." But he warned that Trump "may view the meeting as a hostile message to the United States." Boric, for his part, warned against "extremism and authoritarianism" used to silence dissent and suppress debate. "I also want to tell critics of this gathering that there is never a bad time to strengthen democracy, to reaffirm our convictions regarding multilateralism and the unwavering respect for human rights, always," he added. Boric said he had invited Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canada's Mark Carney to the meeting, but they were unable to attend.
