Over 500 evacuated as Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupts, spews ash and gas
GUATEMALA CITY, June 6 — Authorities said yesterday they were evacuating more than 500 people after Central America's most active volcano spewed gas and ash.
Residents were moved to shelters from communities near the Fuego volcano, located 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the capital Guatemala City.
'We prefer to leave rather than mourn the death of everyone in the village later,' Celsa Perez, 25, told AFP.
The government suspended local school activities and closed a road linking the south of the country to the colonial city of Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, disaster coordination agency Conred reported.
There have been several such mass evacuations in recent years because Fuego erupted, including in March of this year.
In 2018, 215 people were killed and a similar number left missing when rivers of lava poured down the volcano's slopes, devastating a village.

It remains unclear how many people have been impacted by the flooding. However the military said more than 4,400 households had been affected. Thailand's disaster prevention agency said it is closely monitoring water levels and urged communities to move belongings to higher ground in case of flash flooding. While Thailand experiences annual monsoon rains in the third quarter of the year, man-made climate change is causing more intense weather patterns that make destructive floods more likely. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A factory believed to be an oil storage facility at Taman Megah Ria in Masai, Johor, caught fire at about midday today. The Johor fire and rescue department said the operation to extinguish the flames was still ongoing at the time of writing. Utusan Malaysia said residents along Jalan Kempas 7, about 50m from the site, were believed to have been instructed to evacuate their homes as a safety precaution. Electricity supply to the nearby housing area has also been shut off. Footage of the fire uploaded by netizens on social media shows fire and thick smoke emitting from the commercial area at Taman Megah Ria.

Thick smoke and explosions reported as Johor Baru factory burns (VIDEO)
KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — An oil storage facility caught fire at Taman Megah Ria in Johor Baru earlier today. The blaze, which broke out around 12.30pm, sent thick black smoke soaring over 100 metres into the air, intensified by hot weather and strong winds. About 60 per cent of the premises was destroyed in fire, but no casualties reported, according to the Johor Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba). Residents in the vicinity were ordered to evacuate their homes as a safety precaution and electricity supply in the affected area was cut off to prevent any untoward incidents. According to Berita Harian, several small explosions occurred around 2pm, with oil drums seen flying through the air due to the blasts. Bomba is actively working to bring the fire under control.
