With Westwood at Dundonald, his former Ryder Cup partner Jamie Donaldson, who hit the match-clinching shot for Europe at Gleneagles in 2014. McDowell is desperate to be part of Open on home soil with the event set to be epic as Shane Lowry goes back to the scene of his 2019 triumph and Rory McIlroy plays at home for the first time since clinching his career Grand Slam at Augusta in April.
McDowell told BBC: 'I'll be pretty fired up. I'm excited. It would certainly be bittersweet to not be there, but I'll definitely be giving it my full attention and be trying hard.
'With everything that Rory's done this year with Shane being the defending champion, to go back to Portrush, it's going to be a special week. It goes without saying that I'd love to be a part of it.'

Scheffler 'in a league of his own', says inspired DeChambeau

Bryson DeChambeau hailed the improvement made by world number one Scottie Scheffler as the American closes in on a fourth major at the British Open. DeChambeau produced a remarkable final three rounds at Royal Portrush after shooting a seven-over 78 on Thursday, to set the clubhouse lead on nine under. However, his quest for a first Claret Jug will have to wait as Scheffler hit the turn for the back nine at 16 under par to close in on his second major of the year. "It was a fun three days. I was really proud of the way I turned it around," said the two-time US Open champion. "Scottie's in a league of his own right now. I played with him a lot in college, and he was not that good, so he's figured out a lot of stuff since then. It's really impressive to see and something we can all learn from for sure." DeChambeau is at least on course to better his previous best finish of tied for eighth at the British Open and believes he is making progress on adapting his game to the seaside links conditions. "I always told you guys I like it when it's fair conditions. I can play well. I still have to crack the code when it's raining and windy," he added. "But I feel like we're getting close to some opportunities and solutions for that. It just takes a long time to develop stuff, I'm starting to learn." DeChambeau's next big target is helping the USA to regain the Ryder Cup against Europe in September. "This year's no joke. We're tired of it. We're tired of losing," he said after a 16.5-11.5 defeat in Rome two years ago. "Hope I can bring a lot of energy and a tsunami of a crowd that's going to be rooting for Team USA." However, DeChambeau played down expectations that his close relationship with Donald Trump could see the president turn out to support the US team. "I don't know," said DeChambeau. "I think he's got bigger problems on his hands right now!" kca/jc

Bryson DeChambeau wraps Open rebound with 64, sets sights on Ryder Cup

Bryson DeChambeau reflects on his stunning turnaround at the 153rd Open, in which he went 16 under across his final 54 holes. He tells Cara Banks what went into it and what he's taking away. PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland – The cutoff to automatically qualify for the U.S. Ryder Cup team is less than a month away, but Sunday's final round at The Open marked the end of major championship season and effectively solidified many of those spots. Count Bryson DeChambeau among that group following just his second top-10 finish at The Open, thanks to weekend rounds of 68-64. DeChambeau entered the week fifth on the U.S. points list with the top 6 qualifying on Aug. 17. The final six players will be selected by U.S. captain Keegan Bradley following the Tour Championship. DeChambeau became emotional when asked if he had any communication with Bradley this week. 'I talked with him briefly, and then he put something in our lockers that was pretty inspirational,' he said. 'It's a personal message.' Bradley, who was ninth on the points list and in line to be a playing captain later this year at Bethpage, has ramped up his efforts in recent weeks to focus and motivate his team. 'It was a picture of Justin Leonard, sort of an inspirational look from Brookline [1999 Ryder Cup], an inspirational photo that's important to me. I wrote a little message to the boys on there,' Bradley told Bradley added that he wrote individualized messages on the photos to players who are roughly in the top 15 on the current points list. 'It meant a lot. This year's no joke. We're tired of it. We're tired of losing,' DeChambeau said.

Phil Mickelson has never been one to hold back his thoughts, and on Sunday, as Scottie Scheffler led The Open Championship, Lefty decided it was time to clap back after being teased over an old comment. Around that time, Mickelson took a subtle jab while praising Joaquín Niemann's back-to-back LIV Golf wins on X. "Top 5 Try #1," the short and subtle dig aimed at the World No. 1 read. It followed another jab where Lefty directly targeted Scheffler, posting, "Here's a hot take: Does Scottie win in 2025 before the Ryder Cup? I don't think so," per Joel Beall's screenshot on X. Since then, Scheffler has flipped the narrative with wins at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, the Memorial Tournament, and the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. The LIV pro even acknowledged his misfire after Scheffler's PGA win in May. But the internet never forgets. On Saturday, after Scheffler's bogey-free 67 and Jim "Bones" Mackay's viral comparison of Scheffler to Tiger Woods, Kevin Kisner couldn't resist. He teased the 55-year-old on X posting, "Need the update!" on a screenshot that had Lefty's old comment. But Mickelson fired back with a lengthy reply that read. "Kiz, my man. I've never been afraid to make mistakes on the course or off, knowing I'll have to deal with scrutiny from the public, media, or social media," he wrote. "I've already acknowledged I was wrong on this. This is a good example of why so many people are afraid to put themselves out there and compete or take risks because they know it'll be thrown back in their face and they can't handle it. Fortunately that's not ever been my problem. But others struggle dealing with the heat and scrutiny that professional sports and being in the public eye brings and drives many away from the game which is too bad but is reality for so many." Kisner later replied with a nod to Mickelson's own final round, where the 2013 British Open champion posted a bogey-free 67 to finish 1-over for the tournament. Mickelson, ever the showman, responded again. "Thank you partner," he posted. "I believe you and I are still undefeated." 👊thank you partner. I believe you and I are still undefeated — Phil Mickelson (@PhilMickelson) July 20, 2025 Meanwhile, Scheffler opened his Sunday round with a birdie on the first hole, immediately reinforcing his grip on the leaderboard. With a four-shot cushion and momentum on his side, the World No. 1 looked poised to claim his fourth major title. With a win, Scheffler would become the 31st player with four or more major championship victories. More Golf: Lefty's Ex-Caddie in Awe, Makes Scottie Scheffler-Tiger Woods Comparison
