Police cop drunken abuse after driver pulled over
A Dunedin woman was caught driving nearly four times over the legal alcohol limit and abused police after being pulled over.
Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said police stopped a vehicle in Richardson St, St Kilda, at 3.45am on Thursday.
The vehicle was seen swerving on the road and was being driven by a 41-year-old woman, Sgt Lee said.
''She exhibited signs of recent alcohol consumption and was verbally abusive towards police.''
She recorded a breath alcohol level of 926mcg — nearly four times over the legal limit for adults of 250mcg of alcohol per litre of breath.
Her driver's licence was suspended and she was summonsed to appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date, Sgt Lee said.
Police also stopped a vehicle being driven by a 61-year-old man at a checkpoint in King Edward St, at 10.20pm on Friday.
The man admitted consuming ''one can of elephant beer and two glasses of wine'' before driving, Sgt Lee said.
He recorded a breath alcohol level of 656mcg.
His driver's licence was suspended and he was charged with driving while over the legal alcohol limit.
He will appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date, Sgt Lee said.
At a checkpoint in George St, at 11.19pm on Saturday, a 19-year-old driver was stopped.
He admitted consuming six units of KGB-branded vodka before getting behind the wheel, Sgt Lee alleged.
He recorded a breath alcohol level of 824mcg.
His driver's licence was suspended and he was arrested, due to appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date.

Man pepper sprayed at ex's house after stealing her car
A Dunedin man was pepper sprayed while being arrested for allegedly stealing his ex-partner's car. The 35-year-old man showed up to his former partner's house at about 12am this morning and stole her Honda Inspire, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said. Police later found the man back at the house at 2.30am. He resisted arrest and was pepper sprayed, Snr Sgt Bond said. He was charged with driving while disqualified, breach of bail and unlawfully taking the motor vehicle, and he would appear in Dunedin District Court today. The car was recovered and returned to the woman, Snr Sgt Bond said.

Postie knocked down in Dunedin driveway
File photo: ODT A Dunedin postie was treated by ambulance officers after being knocked off his motorbike in a Dunedin driveway. The 54-year-old New Zealand Post delivery driver was hit by a car in High St, Mosgiel at 4.40pm yesterday, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said. A 46-year-old man reversing his vehicle out of a driveway knocked him off his motorbike. Hato Hone St John attended and the man was treated at the scene, Snr Sgt Bond said. This morning at 2.10am, a person driving a Subaru Legacy along Kaikorai Valley Rd crashed his vehicle into a power pole. He was then observed ''stumbling'' away before running off. Police are yet to locate the man and inquiries were ongoing, Snr Sgt Bond said. At 8pm yesterday, a 33-year-old man driving through the Orari and Otaki Sts intersection pulled out in front of an 85-year-old woman's car. This caused both vehicles to crash and both to be written off. The 85-year-old woman was transported to Dunedin Hospital as a precaution, Snr Sgt Bond said.

Improvised weapons accompany threats and posturing
Photo: File A show of threats and ''posturing'', accompanied by an array of improvised weapons, led to the arrest of one man in Dunedin. Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called to a Canongate address, in City Rise, at 10am on Friday after a 53-year-old male confronted a 34-year-old male about ''some issue that they've got between them''. ''The 53-year-old challenged him to a fight, pulled a metal pole from his truck. ''As a result, the 34-year-old went inside to get a baseball bat to defend himself.'' The 53-year-old then returned to his vehicle and replaced his metal pole with an axe and claw hammer. Snr Sgt Bond said the men did not have physical contact with each other — ''it was just threats and posturing''. The 53-year-old left the address and was located by police a short time later. He appeared in Dunedin District Court on Saturday morning, charged with possession of an offensive weapon and driving while disqualified. Meanwhile, in Mornington, frustration over an empty petrol tank revealed one man's laundry list of questionable activities. Snr Sgt Bond said police were called to Mornington Rd at 10.45pm on Saturday after reports of a man kicking a Toyota Corolla. ''It turns out the 39-year-old male was the owner of the vehicle,'' he said. ''It had run out of petrol, so he was frustrated and taking his frustration out on the vehicle.'' The driver failed an impairment test and police were waiting for the results of his blood sample, Snr Sgnt Bond said. He was also spoken to about two petrol drive-offs. ''The vehicle also didn't have a warrant of fitness since 2020 and he had his 10-year-old daughter in the car at the time too,'' Snr Sgnt Bond said.
