Listener and Woman's Weekly publisher Are Media is up for sale

The home of some of New Zealand and Australia's most popular magazines is looking for a buyer. But why now and who are the top contenders to take over?
In 2020, the media landscape of New Zealand and Australia changed forever with the closure of Bauer Media.
Covid-19 led to the German-owned business reviewing its global operations and deciding to exit the market here and across the Tasman. At the time, Bauer owned approximately 70% of the magazine market in New Zealand. The decision sent shockwaves through the industry, and led to the sale of the company's assets to various new owners.
A number of Bauer's most successful Australian and New Zealand titles such as the Listener, New Zealand Woman's Weekly, Woman's Day and Kia Ora were sold to Sydney-based Mercury Capital, which rebranded the company as Are Media. The transaction was estimated to cost between $44-54 million and came just five years after Bauer paid $572m for ACP Magazines. Now, five years on from the purchase, the portfolio is once again up for sale.
The decision to sell Are Media was confirmed in an email sent to staff members earlier this week from chief executive Jane Huxley: 'After careful consideration, Mercury and our Board have decided it's time to begin the process of finding a new owner for the Are Media Group.'
Are Media was part of Mercury's $600m fund, which includes the likes of ticketing and event promotion and technology company TEG. It is one of four funds managed by the company, with the total amount under management by Mercury Capital amounting to approximately $1.3 billion. While it is common practice for equity firms such as Mercury Capital to purchase these types of investments, implement a lean management approach, and then sell quickly, Mercury has held Are Media for around five years.
'This decision comes from a place of strength and optimism. We've built incredibly strong foundations, and now it's time to take the next step,' Huxley told staff.
Although the titles have retained a loyal following, declining circulation numbers and ongoing battles with advertising spend shifting to social and digital platforms has been an issue for the business – and indeed the industry as a whole. However, the Australian media market is faring slightly better than New Zealand, primarily due to Australia's larger population and more diversified economy.
It is unknown if Mercury Capital intends to split the New Zealand assets from the Australian titles or sell them as a whole. If the assets are split, New Zealand's largest multimedia company NZME could be a frontrunner for the purchase of the New Zealand titles. The New Zealand Listener's online presence and subscriptions are currently managed by NZME's subsidiary the New Zealand Herald. The Listener magazine remains the country's second-most popular magazine, behind only to AA Directions. Last year, the Listener increased its readership to 220,000, up 2,000 compared from 12 months earlier. NZ Woman's Day was third and Kia Ora in fourth, with readership increasing by 14,000 to 145,000 and by 12,000 to 137,000 respectively.
The sale will be led by KPMG, and follows a recent announcement of a strategic partnership between Are Media and United States publishers Dotdash Meredith.
'I know that announcements like this can create uncertainty, and that's completely normal,' the email read. 'We've built strong foundations over the five years, and now it's time to take the next step. In the meantime, we are focussed on business as usual.'

Father and foodie Andre reserves a "table for one" every couple of weeks — he prefers to try fine dining restaurants alone. The Auckland-based IT professional is a 'busy guy' with a family and a demanding job. 'Sometimes it's nice to just have a bit of chill out time on your own, go somewhere, and eat some food,' he says. 'Probably about a third of the time that I would dine out, I would go on my own.' While sampling degustation menus and new 'nice' restaurants is Andre's idea of a good time, his wife and two teen children are not as into food as he is, so he's happy to go solo. ADVERTISEMENT 'If my wife doesn't want to accompany me to a particular restaurant, but I really want to go, then I'll go solo. It's totally fine. Even if I travel with my wife, I will probably eat half the number of meals solo.' Statistics show that Andre is, ironically, not alone. A rise in the number of people making solo reservations seems to be a global trend. Restaurant Reservation Service OpenTable reported an 8% increase in solo dining reservations in the US last year compared to 2023, and the UK and Canada saw an increase of more than 10%. The phenomenon has become ever apparent across the ditch too, with the average Australian dining solo 49 times in 2024 according to a national hospitality report. NZ Restaurant Association CEO Marisa Bidois says it's likely New Zealanders are following suit. A member poll conducted by the association in 2022 found 30% of responding restaurants reported an increase in solo dining. 'I think that it's probably becoming more acceptable as dining out is becoming part of our everyday life more,' Bidois says. ADVERTISEMENT 'Travelling on your own is certainly becoming more common over the years. So, as we see our tourist numbers tick up, we may see more [solo diners] as well.' Bidois also acknowledges the cost-of-living crisis as a possible reason for the increase. 'Not everyone is in a position to head out for dinner at any one time. And if you're a real foodie, and that's what you're putting your money aside for, you still want to be able to treat yourself.' Auckland chef Al Brown told RNZ last year that his restaurants, which include inner-city Best Ugly Bagels and Depot Eatery, have experienced a rise in customers who are dining by themselves. He says there seems to be more confidence around the activity – and also credits a rise in solo travellers. '[People are] really enjoying their alone time in an atmosphere which is full of theatre. You're being looked after, you're eating a delicious plate of food hopefully – there is a whole lot of feel-good around that. "You don't know what is going to happen so there is a little bit of anxiety. But generally, in hospitality, we're trying to look after people. That's our big thing; making people feel comfortable and giving them a great experience. When you come in alone, you get special treatment, there is no question about that.' ADVERTISEMENT Brown recognises that all owners want their tables to be full, but says the importance of taking care of solo diners should not be underestimated. 'If you look after a good single diner, every time they come to the city, they'll came back to you for sure.' Adjustable partitions along the tables allow customers to separate themselves from others, creating a private booth with a sense of personal space. The restaurant's layout is inspired by aspects of dining culture in Japan — a nation where nearly a quarter of the population eat out alone. Restaurant operating manager Amy Wu says the booths are designed in response to changing modern lifestyles where people are increasingly valuing space and autonomy. ADVERTISEMENT 'This is not about isolating people, but rather about providing freedom of choice and respecting individual comfort. Many people today enjoy having personal space while still being part of a shared environment,' she says. 'People no longer feel that eating alone must be awkward — instead, it can be peaceful, restorative, and enjoyable.' She says it's mostly young people who savour their brothless-style ramen dish in solitude. Wu believes the layout attracts more solo diners to Takimi Mazesoba than traditional restaurants. 'We believe that offering privacy as an accessible standard, not as a luxury, creates stronger loyalty. 'Many customers have shared that they feel no awkwardness dining alone here as they see others doing the same.' The Restaurant Association survey showed more traditional restaurants are looking at how they can best accommodate a growing demand for friendly solo dining options, Bidois says. ADVERTISEMENT 'Some people had specific areas in the restaurant with a nice outlook where a solo diner could sit and enjoy the view, a lot of shared tables and shared spaces and some people were adaptable with the menu as well,' she said. And after 25 years of solo dining, Andre has developed his own list of what makes a restaurant ideal for a meal alone. 'It's always nice if they have a predefined section asking 'What kind of table do you want' on the booking page,' he says. 'With the proliferation of shared plates, which isn't particularly solo dining friendly, it can make picking options difficult. When I dined in Europe lots of restaurants I went to offered half-size entree or half-size sides." He also rates restaurants that offer a degustation menu for one. Filipino-flavoured Bar Magda and Italian-inspired Amano are among Andre's top picks for places to dine solo in his hometown. For those who want to eat out alone but need that extra confidence boost, the seasoned solo diner says, 'the fear in your head is typically worse than the reality'. '...Sometimes you'll go to a restaurant where people are kind of furtively looking at you and thinking 'Has he been stood up?'. But to be honest, I don't really give a toss about any of that. Shared passion for outdoors channelled into business

A pair of Dunedin high school mates have turned their passion for the outdoors into a successful multimedia business. Gabe Ross and Riley Meason, both 22, have turned weekends with their friends fishing, hunting and diving into fulltime jobs over the course of a few years. Mr Ross moved to Hawea from Auckland with his family — who sold their vodka company 42 Below in 2019 and bought Lake Hawea Station — when he was 14 and went to John McGlashan College in Dunedin from year 10. While there, he met Mr Meason and a group of friends who shared a passion for the outdoors and they began filming their adventures in year 12 and 13. Five years later, the Hawea-based duo have a successful adventure and outdoors safety vlog (video blog) series on YouTube called Weekend Mish and a strong following on social media for their content with brand endorsements from the likes of Toyota. Their vlogs include adventures into various locations around Otago and Canterbury and they provide tips about camping in a fun and light-hearted way. Mr Ross said the duo were mostly doing it for fun until 2022 when they got involved with a reality survival show called Tracked and won $100,000. "That kind of helped us kick-start the momentum," he said. It had been an absolute "whirlwind" and "a real pleasure" to see Weekend Mish grow within a few years. Their adventures had not changed a lot from their high school days, but they developed their business acumen and were posting vlogs with more of a plan and had built a merchandise store online. Mr Ross said it was always the goal to create something like Weekend Mish . Getting a business degree at the University of Otago helped him put his plans in action. "I was always going to go to uni and get a degree, but I wasn't sure what in ... after finding the entrepreneurship course at Otago I was like, sweet, that fits perfectly for me." About a year ago, Weekend Mish started looking like a steady career pathway for the duo and about six months ago they began pursuing it fulltime. "It's something that I've dreamt of since I was a little kid and I think it's something that a lot of young fellas ultimately kind of dream of just being able to pick something they love the most and just do that every day for their life. "So yeah, it's a dream come true really to be able to be building Weekend Mish fulltime." Mr Ross said he and Mr Meason had big plans. "Both Riley and I are very, very ambitious people. "We don't really want to settle for just X amount of followers and selling a bit of merch, we want to grow a big multimedia platform. "We want to build our following exponentially and ultimately just grow a really cool business that we're really proud of. "Hopefully, we can inspire people to get out and about in the outdoors and chase their own passions as well."
