Max Verstappen told he is wrong as new Red Bull F1 chief stamps his authority
Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies has rejected claims made by leading driver Max Verstappen that the team will not win another race before the season ends after they were miles off the pace in Hungary at the weekend.
Verstappen, who qualified in eighth, came home on Sunday in ninth, behind the Racing Bull of Liam Lawson. The Dutchman had already all but conceded the title with the McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri too far ahead of the rest.
Red Bull's pace has tailed off over the past 12 months and that has seen Verstappen's dominance end. This season he's managed to win just two of the 14 races and he believes that his win at Imola in May is likely going to be his last until next season.
After his struggles in Budapest the world champion was asked whether he could still win another race this year and emphatically told Dutch media: 'No, not the way things are going right now. That's just the way it is. It's clear.'
His new boss, Mekies, who has replaced Christian Horner, doesn't buy into Verstappen's negative approach however whilst admitting they were off it in Hungary. However the Red Bull team principal is confident they can still mix it with the leaders at certain tracks.

He said: 'I don't think what you see this weekend represents where the car is at. We accept the fact that we are probably not very strong on tracks like here, but what we have seen today was outstanding. So, if you look, no question McLaren are faster, but look at Spa, Max was able to fight certainly on Saturday and surprise everyone in the sprint. So, let's see.
'The season is still very long. Even if car development is going to heavily slow down or is pretty much going to be minimum from now on, we still have a lot of things we can learn, as this weekend showed. And through that, as difficult and as uncomfortable as it is, fundamentally you learn through these sorts of weekends. So better to have them early on.
'We will learn and if we are able to extract a bit more of the car, thanks to weekends like today, then hopefully we can put up a better fight.'
Verstappen currently sits third in the championship, but is nearly 100 points off current leader Piastri. He's immediate concern is likely to be George Russell in fourth. Red Bull's lack of pace is reflected in them being fourth in the teams' standings, behind McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari, which is partly down to the poor results achieved by Yuki Tsunoda.
Verstappen has confirmed he will race with Red Bull in 2026 despite there being huge talk of a move to Mercedes. A major change to the regulations will take place next season but the Dutch driver has chosen to remain committed to the Austrian outfit with the field set for a potential reshuffle.

Djeidi Gassama brace puts much-changed Rangers in control against Viktoria Plzen
The Gers boss hit out at some of his squad following their deflating 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, questioning mentality, egos and application, and captain James Tavernier and midfielder Nicolas Raskin were the biggest names among the expected changes. Martin got the required reaction as winger Djeidi Gassama scored after 15 minutes with his third European goal in three ties before returning striker Cyriel Dessers added a second from the spot just before the interval. Djeidi Gassama, centre, and Cyriel Dessers scored the Rangers goals (Andrew Milligan/PA) Gassama, signed this summer from Sheffield Wednesday, scored a third in the 51st minute to put the Govan side into a commanding lead and eventually a comfortable win. The Light Blues will be heavy favourites for the return game in the Czech Republic next Tuesday, with a play-off tie against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium awaiting the winners. After pointing the finger at his under-performers at the weekend, all eyes were on Martin's team selection and he made significant changes. Along with Tavernier and Raskin – arguably Gers' best player last season – Danilo and Kieran Dowell were left out. New signing Oliver Antman, the Finland winger who joined from Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, made his debut – and was terrific – with left-back Jefte, midfielder Lyall Cameron and Dessers returning while John Souttar was named captain. Russell Martin rang the changes (Andrew Milligan/PA) The Ibrox crowd was more subdued than usual on a big European night, initially. In the seventh minute Plzen's lofty striker Rafiu Durosinmi headed a cross from Amar Memic past the post but it was Gassama who struck first, playing a one-two with Dessers at the edge of the visitors' box before confidently curling the ball past keeper Florian Wiegele. After Gers defender Nasser Djiga brilliantly blocked a goal-bound shot from visiting captain Matej Vydra, Antman's drive from a Gassama cut-back at the other end was cleared off the line by Vaclav Jamelka. Bizarrely Raskin, warming up on the sidelines, was booked by French referee Clement Turpin for apparently trying to interfere at a Plzen throw-in as the Czech side began to exert some pressure. However, when a driving run into the box by Antman ended with him being barged over by Vydra, referee Turpin pointed to the spot for a soft penalty and Dessers sent Wiegele the wrong way. The impressive Oliver Antman wins the penalty for Rangers's second goal (Andrew Milligan/PA) Rangers started the second half strongly and within three minutes midfielder Mohamed Diomande struck the bar with an effort from the edge of the box. However, the third soon arrived as Gassama grabbed his second when he bulleted in a header from a pinpoint Antman cross from the right. There were occasional moments of sloppiness in the Gers ranks throughout the rest of the second half but they remained unpunished. Raskin, Danilo, and Tavernier all came off the bench when the job was done, before in the 83rd minute Gers keeper Jack Butland made a good save from a powerful drive from Memic. After the negativity of Fir Park, it was a more positive performance from the home side although there has to be much more to come from Martin's men.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Announces 18 New Models By The End Of 2027
Mercedes Has Big Plans To Overcome Rivals In recent times, BMW has been enjoying remarkable sales success, but its compatriot rivals are not performing as well. In fact, BMW has sold twice as many cars as Audi did in the first six months of 2025, and while Mercedes has reported better figures, it's still only sold 142,000 vehicles in Q1 2025 compared to BMW's 178,499. In an attempt to close the gap to BMW over the next few years, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius says the period from this year through 2027 will have 'probably the most intense amount of launches in a three-year period in the history of our company,' reports Top Gear, with no fewer than 18 new models planned. 18 New Vehicles, But Not As Many New Nameplates Source: SH Proshots/Autoblog Mercedes is considering the launch of a gas-powered vehicle as a separate thing from the launch of an EV with the same name, so the CLA EV counts as one launch and the hybrid CLA as another. Similarly, the upcoming combustion-powered CLA Shooting Brake is a new launch separate from the EV that has already been released. Mercedes reportedly intends to add one more 'entry-level' combustion car in 2026, alongside two electric cars. One tier above these cars are the 'core' Merc models, which will welcome two combustion vehicles and two EVs next year. One of these will be the new all-electric GLC that was recently teased and will be revealed at the Munich auto show (IAA) in September. As TG notes, the current C-Class was launched around the same time as the GLC, in 2021, so it's likely that a facelift of the sedan will be unveiled before long. Major Changes Coming To The Top Tier Of Mercedes Models Source: Mercedes-Benz 'Most of the customers at the top end today still choose the Swiss watch of cars with a combustion engine, but it's not going to stop our push to electrification,' Källenius said. 'By the end of this decade, for all relevant Mercedes-Benz models, there will be the choice of an electric powertrain for customers.' This mirrors earlier comments from the company that revealed the EQS would disappear to be reborn simply as an S-Class EV with similar styling to the traditional model. As we've noted before, BMW's decision to make EVs like the i4, i5, and i7 look nearly identical to their combustion-powered 4 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series siblings appears to be paying dividends. At the same time, Mercedes will continue developing internal combustion powertrains. 'Five years ago, we would have been estimating that we would be further along in the journey to electrification by now,' the CEO said. 'We will have both ICE and EV for minimum the next 10 years. You cannot let your high-tech combustion engine side sit still.' Expect new AMG models soon, a new baby G-Class, and the production version of the GTXX concept, which will also spawn an SUV. In summary, to satisfy both sorts of buyers, Mercedes plans six new combustion cars and six new EVs in the 'top end' bracket, two new ICE models and one EV in the 'core' lineup, and one new combustion car in the 'entry level' segment.
