Telegram CEO Pavel Durov on French probe against Elon Musk's Twitter: ‘At this point, any tech company…'

Time of India3 days ago
French authorities are investigating
Elon Musk
owned X (formerly Twitter) for alleged algorithm manipulation. The social media platform denied the allegations, calling it 'a politically-motivated criminal investigation'. Responding to the news,
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov
has now shared an X post where he said that 'at this point, any tech company can be declared a 'criminal gang' in France". Durov further stated that such investigations can be harmful for attracting investments.
'A decade of efforts to attract tech investment is being undone by a few bureaucrats advancing their careers and political agendas — at the expense of the French people,' he wrote in the post.
Why French lawmakers are probing Twitter
Earlier this month, French prosecutors opened a preliminary probe into the social media platform, accusing it of data tampering. Based on suspected algorithmic bias and fraudulent data extraction, the probe authorizes police to conduct searches, wiretaps and surveillance against Elon Musk and Twitter executives, or summon them to testify. If they do not comply, a judge could issue an arrest warrant, a Reuters report said.

Twitter responds to French probe
Responding to the probe, X Global Government Affairs account wrote on X:
'French authorities have launched a politically-motivated criminal investigation into X over the alleged manipulation of its algorithm and alleged 'fraudulent data extraction.' X categorically denies these allegations.'
The post further continued 'This investigation, instigated by French politician Eric Bothorel, egregiously undermines X's fundamental right to due process and threatens our users' rights to privacy and free speech. Mr Bothorel has accused X of manipulating its algorithm for 'foreign interference' purposes, an allegation which is completely false.'
'X is committed to defending its fundamental rights, protecting user data and resisting political censorship,' the post concluded.

Myanmar refugees to face deportation if convicted of drug offences: Mizo group

Aizawl: Young Mizo Association (YMA) sub-headquarters in Champhai district, bordering Myanmar, has issued new directives to Myanmar refugees residing in the area. The guidelines state that any refugee convicted of drug trafficking or possession will be deported to Myanmar after serving their jail term. This week, the YMA sub-headquarters outlined rules prohibiting refugees from forming associations or groups based on sub-tribes. The move aims to ensure uniform guidelines and equal access to support and maintenance. "They (refugees) should enrol themselves in the respective YMA units of their localities or villages and submit their Myanmar identity cards to YMA leaders. Whoever violates the local social guidelines are liable to be punished," the directives said. If a refugee intends to relocate, the current YMA unit must notify the new unit in advance. Refugees are barred from running businesses that require govt permits or from owning land or buildings. On Wednesday, the Aizawl-based NGO coordination committee — a coalition of major civil society groups and student organisations — expressed deep concern over the emergence of sub-tribe sentiments among refugees amid ongoing ethnic conflicts in Myanmar and Manipur. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Up to 70% off | Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo At a meeting held in Aizawl, the committee underscored that Mizoram has long been a haven of peaceful coexistence among Zo ethnic tribes. It urged the public and refugees to prevent the rise of divisive, tribe-based thinking that could threaten state harmony. The statement follows recent armed clashes in Myanmar's Chin state between Chin sub-tribes, which forced hundreds of refugees into Mizoram. In neighbouring Manipur, tensions remain high, primarily involving the Meitei community and the Kuki and Zomi groups — ethnic communities closely tied to the Mizos. Past episodes have shown that political divisions can cause friction even between culturally aligned groups like the Kuki and Zomi. Champhai district police officials said nearly 4,000 refugees who had entered Zokhawthar village — fleeing violence in Khawmawi, Rihkhawdar, and nearby Chin state villages — have now returned, following signs of peace.

Opposition paralyses House again over Bihar rolls

Opposition paralyses House again over Bihar rolls NEW DELHI: Proceedings of both Houses of Parliament were disrupted for the fifth consecutive day Friday as opposition kept up its demand for a discussion on SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar, despite repeated assurances from the Chair that govt was ready for all discussions. Both the Houses failed to transact Question Hour and later Zero Hour before it was adjourned for the day due to ruckus caused by protesting MPs from opposition benches who assembled in the well of the House and shouted slogans against govt. RS deputy chairman Harivansh said he received 28 notices seeking suspension of business to discuss SIR, Bengali migrant issues, and India-UK FTA. Similar notices were received in LS but not admitted by the Speaker. Opposition escalated its protest against SIR with the MPs marching from Gandhi statue to main entrance of the Parliament building, shouting slogans and seeking a roll back of SIR. The climax came when Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge led the MPs, including Dharmendra Yadav of SP and Rahul Gandhi, in tearing of the symbolic SIR in the form of a red card and dumping it in a dustbin placed in the middle of the gathering. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Up to 70% off | Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo Kharge said SIR is RSS design to rob SC/STs, OBCs, minorities and the poor of their right to vote. In LS, before adjourning the House for the day, BJP made a point with Jagdambika Pal in the Chair rebuking opposition members for not taking up matters important to their constituents. He told them that they are not serious about even taking up private members' bills, which have the same importance as the bills brought by govt, which are discussed by members in the House. The House was finally adjourned till Monday. While Pal continued to persuade the protesting MPs to go back to their respective seats and allow discussion on the private members' bill, Meghwal mentioned 'The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of Goa Bill, 2024'. A bill concerning STs should be taken up for discussion, he said, and asked: "Are they against STs?". Pal told opposition MPs to desist from disrupting proceedings. "The Speaker has taken the initiative," he said referring to Om Birla's meeting with opposition members for running of the House, assuring them of taking up for discussion all issues raised by them. "The whole week has been washed out. People of the country have some expectations, but you don't want this House to run," Pal told the protesting MPs as he adjourned the House.
