Gabbard claims Obama officials ‘manufactured intelligence' of 2016 Russian election interference

Yahooa day ago
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard released a report Friday alleging Obama administration officials manipulated intelligence related to Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Gabbard asserted in a statement that former officials engaged in a 'treasonous conspiracy' and said her office was turning over evidence to the Justice Department for possible criminal referrals.
'The information we are releasing today clearly shows there was a treasonous conspiracy in 2016 committed by officials at the highest level of our government,' Gabbard said. 'Their goal was to subvert the will of the American people and enact what was essentially a years-long coup with the objective of trying to usurp the President from fulfilling the mandate bestowed upon him by the American people.'
Friday's memo cites officials such as former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey.
President Trump has for years claimed the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether his campaign colluded with Moscow was a 'hoax,' targeting officials like Brennan and Comey with frequent attacks.
Trump in March signed a memo ordering the declassification of 'all files related to Crossfire Hurricane,' the name given to the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The very intelligence agencies that Gabbard now oversees have long concluded that Russia sought to influence the 2016 election — an assessment that was backed by other outside entities.
That includes a three-year bipartisan Senate investigation that concluded in a more than 1,300 page report that Russia was aggressive in seeking to interfere with the election on Trump's behalf, including by launching a massive social media campaign.
Gabbard's memo, as well as another 114 pages of related documents, primarily rests on claims there was no indication of a Russian effort to directly manipulate the actual vote count.
However, that is not at odds with the conclusion of the intelligence community or the Senate report, which determined there was 'no evidence that any votes were changed or that any voting machines were manipulated.' The Obama administration said it had seen no evidence that hackers tampered with the results.
Gabbard's release was immediately panned by Intelligence Committee Democrats, who noted that it comes amid fractures within the Trump administration over how to handle scrutiny over the Jeffrey Epstein case.
'It's a day that ends with 'y' and Donald Trump desperately wants to change the subject, so Director Gabbard is rehashing decade-old false claims about the Obama Administration. Few episodes in our nation's history have been investigated as thoroughly as the Intelligence Community's warning in 2016 that Russia was interfering in the election,' House Intelligence Committee ranking member Jim Himes (D-Conn.) said in a statement.
'Every legitimate investigation, including the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee investigation, found no evidence of politicization and endorsed the findings of the 2016 Intelligence Community Assessment.'
Sen. Mark Warner (Va.), the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, also criticized Gabbard.
'It seems DNI Gabbard is unaware that the years-long Russia investigation carried out by the Senate Intelligence Committee reaffirmed that 'the Russian government directed extensive activity against U.S. election infrastructure' ahead of the 2016 election, and that it 'used social media to conduct an information warfare campaign' in order to benefit Donald Trump. This conclusion was supported on a unanimous basis by every single Democrat and Republican on the committee,' he said in a statement.
Also Friday, the Justice Department moved to release some evidence from the Epstein case, including some grand jury testimony, under pressure to release more information about a figure Trump used to socialize with.
The move from Gabbard comes not only amid fallout from the Epstein saga but shortly after reports that she had fallen out of favor with Trump over intelligence related to Iran's nuclear program.
Friday's release underscores how probing the origins of the Russia investigation has remained a fixation for the president nearly a decade later. The memo also focuses on the Steele dossier, a collection of salacious allegations about Trump's ties to Russia, some of which has been discredited.
Gabbard received praise from GOP figures for the report.
'DISMANTLING THE DEEP STATE!' Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) wrote on social platform X.
'The Russia hoax was a political hit job manufactured by Obama officials and weaponized by intel agencies to take down President Trump. Accountability is long overdue!'
However, in Democratic circles, Gabbard has been accused — in this instance as well as others — of tailoring intelligence to suit the needs of the administration.
Warner noted that Gabbard previously called on Trump to pardon leaker Edward Snowden, who released thousands of National Security Agency documents showing the bulk collection of Americans' communications data.
'It is sadly not surprising that DNI Gabbard, who promised to depoliticize the intelligence community, is once again weaponizing her position to amplify the president's election conspiracy theories,' Warner said.
'It is appalling to hear DNI Gabbard accuse her own IC workforce of committing a 'treasonous conspiracy' when she was unwilling to label Edward Snowden a traitor.'

Dana White 'can't risk' Jon Jones being involved in UFC's potential White House event

UFC's White House event concept has been the talk of MMA since U.S. president Donald Trump and UFC CEO Dana White revealed intentions to make it a reality in 2026. Several big-named fighters have proclaimed their desires to be part of the event, including the recently retired all-time great Jon Jones. The ongoing saga between Jones and the previously hostaged heavyweight title ended with Jones' surprise retirement two weeks ago at UFC Baku's post-fight press conference. However, Jones has since claimed he's already enrolled back in the UFC's drug-testing pool and is ready and willing to fight at the White House event. Thanks to his checkered past outside the Octagon — Jones is currently facing a new criminal charge among a long line of many — the former two-division champion has proven to be unreliable at times on the UFC's biggest platforms. That's why White isn't sold on the idea of Jones being a part of the action. "I can't risk putting him in big positions in a big spot and have something go wrong, especially the White House," White said of Jones at UFC 318's post-fight press conference. UFC's potential White House trip has remained a fixture of any public conversation White is a part of since the news broke. While it may be too soon to imagine what the fight lineup could actually look like, White knows he'll have to make preparations far earlier than usual because of the event's unique challenge. That being said, he's adamant the Las Vegas Sphere is still more difficult to set up for a fight night, as the UFC did with its Emmy award-winning show this past October at UFC 306. "That fight's a year away, so I'm not even thinking about anything right now," White said. "The landscape will change so much by next Fourth of July. Who knows what's going to happen? Who knows what's going to be on the card or what the main event will be, or who holds all the titles? Everything could be completely different. It's not even worth thinking about right now. "I have other problems. I'm dealing with the logistics and all the things on figuring out how to make this thing happen. How do we want to do it? I'm going to fly out there in about 10 days, and we'll have all the renderings done, sit down with [Trump] and go through the renderings, and see what he wants to do and doesn't want to do. "The difference with the White House is I don't think they've ever had anything very heavy out on the lawn, and the Octagon alone weighs 20,000 pounds."

The Democratic Senator has eviscerated the president for trying to blame her party for a mess entirely of his own making.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar slammed President Donald Trump for blaming Democrats for the mess he created with the Epstein files with a hilarious comparison. 'The president blaming Democrats for this disaster is like that CEO that got caught on camera blaming Coldplay,' the Minnesota Democrat said Sunday in an interview with CNN. 'This is his making.' Klobuchar was, of course, referring to this week's viral scandal surrounding tech company Astronomer's CEO Andy Byron and HR chief Christin Cabot, whose secret romance was spectacularly betrayed to their respective spouses after the pair were caught on a Jumbotron camera canoodling at the British band's Massachusetts concert Wednesday night.

‘When the raids started, fear spread': LA Mayor Bass on Trump's deportation efforts

As President Donald Trump marks six months into his second term, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass told ABC News' "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz that the administration's immigration crackdown has not only sparked protests, but fear among the city's residents. 'Los Angeles is a city of immigrants -- 3.8 million people, and about 50% of our population is Latino. And so when the raids started, fear spread,' Bass said. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids started in Los Angeles early June, prompting demonstrations that at times turned violent. While Trump's deportation push was initially said to be centered around undocumented immigrants with criminal records, an ABC News analysis of new data shows that in recent weeks, the Trump administration has arrested an increasing number of migrants with no criminal convictions. Bass said that the restaurant the interview took place in, located in the predominantly Latino Boyle Heights neighborhood of east Los Angeles, was typically bustling. But now, it — and the neighborhood overall — can feel like a ghost town. 'It's not just the deportation. It's the fear that sets in when raids occur, when people are snatched off the street,' Bass said. "Even people who are here legally, even people who are U.S. Citizens, have been detained. Immigrants who have their papers and were showing up for their annual immigration appointment were detained when they showed up doing exactly what they were supposed to be doing." She criticized ICE for agents for executing enforcement operations without their affiliation being prominently displayed. 'Masked men in unmarked cars, no license plate, no real uniforms, jumping out of cars with rifles, and snatching people off the street, leading a lot of people to think maybe kidnappings were taking place," Bass said. "How do you have masked men who then say, 'Well, we are federal officials,' with no identification?' Raddatz noted that administration says those agents do that because "there have been threats... [and] doxing." "We have a Los Angeles police department that has to deal with crime in this city every single day. And they're not masked. They stay here," Bass said. "The masked men parachute in, stay here for a while, and leave. And so you enter a profession like policing, like law enforcement? I'm sorry, I don't think you have a right to have a mask and snatch people off the street." Bass also touched on the continued presence of federal troops in the city. In response to those protests in early June, Trump deployed the National Guard and active-duty Marines to Los Angeles after protesters clashed with police. Some protestors threw rocks, fireworks and other objects at police, according to reports, before the arrival of federal troops. MORE: Judge to rule by next week on Abrego Garcia's detention as he awaits trial Trump signed a memorandum in June saying the National Guard was deployed to address lawlessness in Los Angeles. The California National Guard's 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team posted on X that its objective was to protect federal protesters and personnel. In her interview with ABC News, Bass denounced the violence as 'terrible,' but said it did not "warrant military intervention." 'It did not warrant the Marines coming into our city with basically no real mission, but just to show a force,' Bass said. While the number of National Guard members in the city has been cut roughly in half, Bass said that their objective has not changed since they first arrived — and argued they're presence is still not necessary. 'If you drive by our two federal buildings, you will see them standing out there. But there's nothing going on in those federal buildings. So in my opinion, we are misusing taxpayers' dollars, and we are misusing our troops,' she said. While she disagreed strongly with the Trump administration's immigration agenda, Bass said she appreciated the help the administration gave Los Angeles during the massive January wildfires. 'Well, I will heap praise on the administration for the first six months in Los Angeles with the fires. If you ask me, is there anything that they have done good in terms of immigration? I don't know. I don't think so,' she said. "I think that the viewpoint has been punitive, has been let's make it as miserable as possible so that these people don't come." Bass said that she is still willing to 'work' with the White House, noting both the Olympics and World Cup coming to the city over the next few years. "How does this end?" Raddatz asked. "How do you see the next six months, the next two years for immigrants in your city?" 'Well, I am just hoping that this reign of terror ends. I'm hoping that the military leaves, because they were never needed here to begin with. I'm hoping that we can get back to normal. I'm hoping that the next time I come to this restaurant, that it will be filled, because people won't be afraid to come here,' Bass said.
