Nurturing Young Minds Through The Joy Of Play

NDTV23-04-2025
New Delhi: In a lively neighborhood not too long ago, children spent their days outdoors, laughing together, climbing trees, and creating their own adventures. Their imaginations sparked as they built castles in the sand or played games with friends. Fast forward to now, and many kids are glued to screens, missing out on the joy of play.
To celebrate childhood through play and promote less screen time, "Bachpan Manao," an initiative by Ekstep and NDTV, aims to revive the magic of play in early childhood and underscore its importance for children's growth.
The Importance Of Early Engagement
During the formative years, a child's brain is highly receptive and adaptable, making it a prime opportunity for nurturing their interests and talents. Research shows that positive interactions through playful activities not only enhance cognitive skills but also build emotional connections between children and their caregivers.
Rohini Nilekani, Co-Founder and Director of Ekstep Foundation, emphasises the impact of early engagement:
"When we show young children things with care and love, they learn a lot and quickly. In the first few years of life, millions of neuronal connections get created every second in the small brain. If we make that very solid, it's gonna be great and can help a lot in learning.'
This highlights the idea that when parents and caregivers engage with children through play, it helps them learn and grow in amazing ways. The initiative urges families to cherish and prioritize playtime.
Deepika Mogilishetty, Chief of Policy and Partnerships at the Ekstep Foundation, stresses the magic that happens during these early years:
"Pay attention to the first eight years; something magical is happening. By focusing more on play, we unlock opportunities for children to develop important skills.'
The Vital Role of Play Play isn't just for fun; it's essential for a child's growth. Dr. Zirak Marker, a child psychologist, emphasizes that much of a child's learning occurs during play. He shares:
"Ninety percent of all your learning and pathways happen because of neuroplasticity. Play helps children develop social skills, manage their emotions, and learn lessons in kindness and empathy that are vital for their future.'
Free play nurtures creativity and imagination, providing a safe space for children to experiment with ideas and create new narratives. Mrunal Shah, founder of Sunday Bricks, points out,
"If there's hands-on learning, children will always learn, and that's the key to keeping them engaged."
Moreover, Harpreet Singh Grover, an Independent Researcher on Parenting, advises,
'You should say 'No' to the child with love, and it's essential to surround them with life; there must be loving adults around them.'
Echoing this sentiment, Sunisha Ahuja, a UNICEF Education Specialist, reminds us,
'We must remember that play is incredibly important. We should celebrate play. Parents often think the child is getting bored, but the child is not bored at all. The child is just exploring.'
The future of our children, and the world they will create, depends on the rich experiences they develop today through the power of play.
Dr. Swati Popat Vats, President of the Early Childhood Association, emphasizes practical approaches, stating,
'Parents should learn four essential things: communication, exercise, play, and reflection; these are vital for children's development.'
Conclusion
"Bachpan Manao" is a reminder to embrace the joy of play, just like we did in our own childhoods. It calls on parents, grandparents, and caregivers to join in on the fun and create unforgettable moments with children. By making time for play today, we help build a brighter, more connected future for our little ones. Let's come together to ensure every child experiences the joy and benefits of play, filling their lives with laughter, learning, and love.

Bloated During Periods? Try This Ajwain Jeera Drink For Quick Relief

For many women, the menstrual cycle brings more than just cramps and mood swings. It brings the unwelcome companion of period bloating. This common symptom can leave you feeling puffy, uncomfortable, and self-conscious. But what causes this water retention and more importantly, how can you alleviate it? Nutritionist Lovneet Batra shared the cure for period bloating in her latest Instagram post. In the caption, she wrote, "Feeling heavy, puffy, or sluggish before your period? That uncomfortable bloating isn't random - it's hormonal." See the post here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovneet Batra (@lovneetb) Why does period bloating occur? Estrogen rises before your period, making your body hold onto sodium and water. Progesterone drops, and a hormone called aldosterone increases, which tells your kidneys to retain even more fluid. This activates the RAAS pathway (your body's fluid-balancing system), leading to water retention and bloating at a cellular level. How can you get rid of period bloating? Nutritionist Lovneet Batra shared the recipe to make an ajwain, jeera and ginger drink that helps you get rid of the uncomfortable feeling. Here is the full recipe: Ingredients: 1 tsp ajwain (carom seeds), 1 tsp jeera (cumin seeds), 1 inch fresh ginger (crushed or sliced) and 2 cups water. Method: Add all ingredients to a saucepan with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer for 5-7 minutes. Strain into a cup and sip warm. Drink once or twice a day, especially 1-2 days before your period and during the first couple of days of menstruation. This simple yet effective drink helps alleviate water retention, reduce discomfort, and promote overall well-being. With a little self-care and the right tools, you can take control of period bloating and enjoy a more comfortable menstrual cycle. World Brain Day 2025: Experts Say Mental Health In Workplace Is Important, "Stress Is Not A Badge Of Honour"

World Brain Day is observed annually on July 22 to raise awareness about brain health. The theme for World Brain Day 2025 is "Brain Health for All Ages" to emphasise the importance of maintaining brain health throughout one's life, from birth to old age. The day has also given an opportunity to talk about mental health in the workplace. "With the work and hustle culture, mental health can no longer be neglected or ignored," Dr Maitri Thakker, clinical psychologist, told NDTV. "It calls for attention, awareness, responsibility and care." "We need to understand that stress is not a badge of honour, for chronic stress leads to burnout, sleep difficulties, irritability and other health complications as well," Dr Thakker added. She added that if stress is left unacknowledged or unaddressed, it spills over into our relationships and plummets self-esteem. Importance Of Mental Health In The Workplace Mental health in the workplace has become a crucial aspect of employee well-being and productivity. It addresses how individuals manage stress and make decisions in their roles. From tight deadlines to blurred work-life boundaries, the modern workplace can very easily become both: a source of purpose and a space of long-term stress and tension. Dr Thakker said that we show up to work every day with not only our abilities but also our anxieties and stress, and also our coping mechanisms, which are both healthy and unhealthy. Employees who manage their mental health effectively are more focused and efficient. Addressing such issues can lead to lower absenteeism rates, as it is expected that employees will take less time off due to stress or illness. Dr Thakker stated that a workplace that promotes mental health fosters positive relationships, reduces conflicts and creates a more collaborative culture. Such workplaces also have lower turnover rates because employees feel valued and don't seek employment in other companies. Depression, anxiety and burnout are some of the common mental health issues in the workplace. Here are some simple tips to implement changes: Mental health check-ins: Employees can start conversations about how people are actually doing. Change at senior level: If the change happens at the top level, employees would feel like they also have a space to express. Draw boundaries: Avoid after-work hours communication, celebrate the small wins, reward outcomes rather than rewarding overworking. Take Care Of Your Brain Dr Deep Das, a neurologist at CMRI Kolkata, told NDTV, "The brain is the only organ that defines who we are-our thoughts, memories, and choices. It can't be replaced, transplanted, or rebooted." "While AI can mimic intelligence, it cannot replicate the human mind's empathy, imagination, or resilience. On World Brain Day, let's remember: brain health is not just for the elderly-it's for every age." "These simple habits today can shield you from stroke, dementia, and even depression tomorrow," Dr Das said.

Days Before Resignation, VP Dhankhar Hinted At Full Term, But With A Caveat

Last Updated: The remark, largely overlooked at the time, has gained renewed attention following his sudden departure from office. Just ten days before his unexpected resignation, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar had expressed confidence in serving his full term until August 2027, but with a caveat. According to a report by NDTV, Dhankhar remarked while speaking at an event at Jawaharlal Nehru University on July 10. 'I will retire at the right time, August 2027," Dhankhar stated during his address, before qualifying the comment with, 'subject to divine intervention." The remark, largely overlooked at the time, has gained renewed attention following his sudden departure from office. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening, citing medical reasons, triggering speculation in political circles. In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar said he was stepping down with immediate effect to 'prioritise health care". 'To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution," he said in the letter to the President. Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022 and his tenure was till August 2027. The resignation of Dhankhar, also the Rajya Sabha Chairman, came on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament. He had recently undergone angioplasty at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi and was admitted to the hospital for a few days in March this year. He appeared not so well at a few events, but has been mostly seen as lively and energetic in his most public appearances, including in Parliament. In his eventful tenure as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar has had several run-ins with the Opposition, which had also moved a motion to impeach him. The motion to remove him, the first time in independent India to remove a sitting Vice President, was later rejected by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh. He is the third Vice President of India after V V Giri and R Venkataraman to resign during tenure. Giri and Venkataraman had resigned from the post of Vice President to contest the presidential election. There was no official word from anyone in the government or the ruling BJP on why Dhankhar resigned or who could be his successor. According to rules, elections have to be held 'as soon as possible" to fill the post of vice president. However, the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman can take over the House proceedings till the time a new vice president is elected. Dhankhar was the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance's candidate in the election for Vice President, who is the ex-officio Chair of the Rajya Sabha, in 2022. His resignation triggered speculation with the Congress expressing surprise, saying it is 'totally unexpected" and there is 'far more to it than meets the eye". 'The sudden resignation of the Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is as shocking as it is inexplicable," Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X. His abrupt resignation follows a day of surprising development in the Rajya Sabha for the government, as an Opposition-sponsored notice for a motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma was submitted to him and he mentioned the same in the House and asked the secretary general to take further necessary steps. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
