We have our roots and we are proud of them – Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano
Yet while City have been transformed radically since being taken over by Sheikh Mansour in 2008, Soriano maintains their ambitions will not come at the cost of tradition.
Soriano told DAZN: 'We have our roots and we are proud of them.
'But you can be local and relevant and faithful to the history of the club, and the fans that support you, but you can also be global and show what we do – which we believe is beautiful football – to the world.
'It's a combination that works very well and we are proud.'
City began their challenge in the US with a 2-0 win over Moroccan side Wydad AC in front of a crowd of 37,446 in Philadelphia on Wednesday.
The tournament has faced plenty of criticism for a variety of reasons, including its positioning in the calendar and consequent player welfare concerns, ticket prices, poor attendances, kick-off times and venue choices.
Yet Soriano has no doubt of the merits of the revamped competition, which has been expanded from the seven-team event won by City in 2023 to a month-long affair featuring 32 clubs.
The Spaniard said: 'We are very excited by it. I think it's something that was very much needed. Soccer is a global sport and we have to make it global.
'You have to have teams like Manchester City playing teams from Morocco, Korea or wherever. That's part of the globalisation of the number one sport in the world.
'I think it's a great initiative and we are very happy to be here.'
City have set their sights on victory having refreshed the squad following an underwhelming 2024-25 season.
They signed four new players last week in Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli, having also brought in Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis in January.
Soriano said: 'The ambition for City in any competition is to win it. That's the status of the club.
'Obviously it's not possible to win always, so we want to go as far as we can.
'The squad needs to be renewed. It's something that happens naturally.
'We are very happy, I'm happy, with the work that we did.
'Last summer we only bought one new player but this year between the winter and the summer it will be eight new ones.
'It's part of the annual cycle, the renewal of the squad. We accelerated some of it and now we are very happy with the squad we have.'

Emma Raducanu's new coach was swiftly axed by star who made telling eight-word comment
Emma Raducanu has appointed Francis Roig as her new coach, but the Spaniard's last partnership with Matteo Berrettini did not end on the best of terms Emma Raducanu appears to have taken a gamble in recruiting Francis Roig to her coaching team. That's because he didn't see eye-to-eye with former mentee Matteo Berrettini. And Raducanu has been known to butt heads with plenty of her previous coaches. While the Spaniard spent nearly two decades achieving remarkable success in Rafael Nadal's coaching setup, his recent stint with current world No. 36 Berrettini proved fleeting. A comment made by the Italian following their parting of ways might worry Raducanu. Berrettini admitted in eight telling words: "It's true that we saw some things differently." Roig assisted in coaching Nadal, alongside the Spaniard's uncle Toni, from 2005 through to 2022. The following year saw him team up with former Wimbledon finalist Berrettini. Yet while his partnership with Nadal endured for years, his role with Berrettini concluded within 12 months. Speaking about their separation, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist explained in October: "It wasn't an easy choice, but it was mutual. "He has helped me a lot on this journey back, helped me improve, but it's true that we saw some things differently. It was a completely professional decision, so I truly thank him for everything he did for me; we have had a successful year. Now it's time to turn the page towards a new chapter, hopefully with the best waiting in the future." Raducanu has delivered an impressive run of tournament performances while collaborating with coach Mark Petchey in an unofficial capacity, featuring progress to the Citi Open semi-finals and quarter-final appearances at Queen's and the Miami Open. However, Petchey maintains numerous television obligations that stop him from mentoring Raducanu full-time. As a result, the 22-year-old has now decided to bring in Roig on a deal running until the year's end after a promising trial period following Wimbledon, reports the Express. The British women's No. 1 delivered another solid performance in her most recent tournament at the Canadian Open. She defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Peyton Stearns in straight sets in Montreal before falling to this year's Wimbledon runner-up, Amanda Anisimova, in the third round. The loss has seen Raducanu slip to 38th in the WTA rankings and left her needing to climb the ladder to secure a top-32 seeding for this month's US Open. She now requires a strong showing at the forthcoming WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, where the ranking points available could enhance her prospects of securing more favourable early-round draws at Flushing Meadows. Alongside Roig, Raducanu impressed at Wimbledon this summer. The youngster made light work of Mingge Xu and Markéta Vondroušová in her opening rounds before meeting WTA No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, in the third round. Unfortunately for the Briton, her singles tournament ended there and then, suffering a 7-6 6-4 loss to be sent packing from the courts of SW19. As for Petchey, he explained his position a few weeks ago, saying: 'I have some other commitments I can't get out of. Look, we are very aware she needs a second coach to come in on board, and maybe just one coach, not me as well. 'All I am trying to do here is try to facilitate the best possible environment for Emma to produce the tennis that she can, whether that involves me or doesn't involve me, it's really not a question I'm worried about. It just means we are trying to find something that is going to be really stable and good for her.'

Fernando Alonso's cheeky dig at F1 driver who overhears Spaniard mid-interview
Fernando Alonso was overheard by another Formula One driver as the Spaniard shared a joke after the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading to an on-camera reaction from the young racer Fernando Alonso playfully claimed Aston Martin"were a lot faster than Sauber", just as their driver and his close friend Gabriel Bortoleto walked past him. The Spaniard was speaking following the Hungarian Grand Prix, where the 20-year-old Brazilian had been breathing down his throughout the race. The pair scrapped it out for fifth place, with Alonso ultimately passing the chequered flag seven seconds before Bortoleto, securing 10 championship points for Aston Martin. Despite this, the F1 rookie managed to keep Alonso's team-mate Lance Stroll at bay by a slender two-second gap to claim sixth spot. Following the race, the Aston Martin star spoke with the media ahead of the sport's three-week summer break. Whilst Alonso was reflecting on his display, he noticed Bortoleto walking behind him and seized the opportunity to have a cheeky pop at the Sauber driver. Alonso said: "Yeah, it feels good and we were a lot faster than the Sauber you know," beaming as he watched Bortoleto turning around to give him a little bit of grief. Bortoleto wandered back over, and the duo shared a warm embrace after having a good chuckle about it. Alonso has maintained a strong friendship with the promising driver for quite some time, ever since the legend helped launch Bortoleto's career back in 2022. Speaking to the rising star recalled the moment he was battling to secure a place in an F3 team, when his father happened to meet Alonso at a Red Bull event. Bortoleto said: "We had so many issues in 2022. We were not being followed by anyone at the time. It was just me and my father and I didn't have an opportunity to go to F3 at the time. "We didn't know how difficult it was to get a seat in F3. We thought, 'Oh we're still in July, we have time.' Then I started hearing PREMA was full, Trident was almost full and I thought maybe we should start pushing for it. "It's not easy, you need to find the sponsors to help you get there. Then my father went to race in the Red Bull Ring with some friends. He met Fernando and Alberto and Albert." After this chance encounter with the F1 icon, Bortoleto secured a deal with Alonso's management company, A14, which he runs alongside his two associates, Alberto Fernández Albilares and Albert Resclosa Coll. Reflecting on this partnership, the 20-year-old added: "Fernando knew who I was as I raced for his team in FRECA [the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine]. I had some great results for the team like the first podium, the first front row. "Both of us wanted to be together, me having a good management team, and them trusting in a young driver who could potentially do good results in the future. "They called Trident and it was quite a crazy thing. Everything worked out very well. We signed, we won the championship – and it became very nice." Following that breakthrough, Bortoleto secured F3 and F2 championships in 2023 and 2024 before signing a deal with Kick Sauber for the 2025 F1 campaign. The promising youngster acknowledges Alonso's impact as a pivotal moment in his racing journey, explaining how the Spaniard's backing has enhanced his reputation within the sport. "We have a very good relationship with each other," Bortoleto said. "I think it's mainly a professional relationship. Always when we talk, it's mainly about racing. When I see him on track, if I have any questions, he always helped me in F3 and F2. "I can say I'm very grateful for all the advice he has given me the last two years. He has been very good to me. He's willing to help and teach me. It's a great thing to have him behind. "It's a strong name to have behind you. When you have Fernando Alonso managing you, it's a bit different because they know it's someone like him trusting you can be a future talent."

Celtic sign Manchester City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey on loan
Celtic have signed Manchester City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey on loan until the end of the season. Simpson-Pusey was in the stands as the champions defeated St Mirren 1-0 at home on Sunday in their Scottish Premiership opener. The highly-rated 19-year-old came through the ranks at City and has enjoyed success at youth level, but is now seen as being ready for regular first-team football. He's played for City in both the EFL Cup and the Champions League but the majority of his development has come in Premier League 2, where he was named as player of the season. Simpson-Pusey is now set to compete for honours in Scotland and to help Celtic achieve their European ambitions. The defender told the club's website: 'It's great to be here. It's such a big club and I'm happy to come here, play in front of the fans and play for the team. 'This is a big opportunity. I want to come here and show my talent and my levels. 'It'll be good for me to come and hopefully help the team to win the league again and do well in Europe.' Celtic Manager Brendan Rodgers added: 'I am really pleased we have been able to bring Jahmai to Celtic, and I believe he will be an important, quality addition to our squad. 'Jahmai is a quick, dominant centre half. He is a strong defender but can also move the ball forward very well as we progress through the pitch. 'I know Jahmai is excited about this move and bringing him to the club creates even more competition which will only benefit us. 'I am sure he will settle in well with the squad as we get ready for the matches we have coming up at home and abroad.'
