Delay in declaration of CET results draws criticism
This year, the CET was conducted online between April 19 and May 5 however the results are going to be announced only on June 16 after a gap of nearly 40 days. Vivek Velankar, president of the Pune-based citizens' group compared this timeline with that of the results of Class 12 Maharashtra board exams wherein 14 lakh students appeared and results were declared within 55 days.
'In contrast, the CET, which was held online for barely 7 lakh students, is taking over 40 days for result declaration. This is a puzzle no one can solve,' Velankar said in the letter.
He pointed out that the neighbouring state of Karnataka is handling the process more efficiently. 'Karnataka's CET was conducted between May 10 and 25 and the results will be out on June 7 in just 13 days,' the letter stated.
Velankar also raised concerns over multiple errors in the CET question papers this year. 'There were at least 40 mistakes in the question papers, which is shameful in itself,' he noted.
He said that the delay in declaration of CET results would in turn delay the admission process with professional colleges beginning their academic year as late as mid-August. Calling the entire situation very unfortunate, Velankar demanded immediate action in terms of urgent processing of CET results and admission timelines.
Meanwhile, Akshay Randive, a student, said, 'It's already June 4, and yet the dates keep getting extended again and again. The CET cell helpline tells us to contact the CET office, but no one answers the calls there.'
Abhishek Dubey, another student, said, 'This year, there were around 40 mistakes in the CET question papers which is already frustrating. Now, the delay in results is adding to the stress and making me more anxious by the day.'

HC questions irregularities in preparing DPRs of Cuttack drain project
1 2 Cuttack: Orissa high court has taken serious note of irregularities in the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) related to the Rs 335.42 crore branch surface water channel (BSWC) drain project in Cuttack. A division bench of Justices S K Sahoo and V Narasingh, while hearing the matter on July 11, came down heavily on the housing and urban development department and noted with concern that the DPRs submitted by Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) were neither authenticated nor bore the names of officials involved in their preparation. The court termed the lapses as "startling". The bench also questioned how a Bhubaneswar-based private consultancy firm came to represent the city engineer (CMC) during a crucial meeting held on April 30. "There is nothing on record to indicate how the private company could represent a govt official," the court observed. "The lackadaisical manner in which the entire project is being handled is tell-tale," the bench remarked and directed the secretary of the department to file an affidavit by July 21, clarifying the appointment of the firm, reasons for overlooking IIT Bhubaneswar, and whether any departmental or vigilance inquiry is being initiated into the handling of the project. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The engineer has also been directed to submit a separate affidavit detailing the basis for involving the firm and referring the DPRs to Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla. The matter pertains to the proposed construction of five BSWC drains in the city. Despite a decision taken in Dec 2023 to consult IIT Bhubaneswar for an expert review of the DPRs, the documents were sent instead to VSSUT. The shift was based on a communication dated June 17 this year from the firm. "It does not stand to reason how the govt's direction to consult IIT Bhubaneswar, keeping in mind the hydraulic analysis required, was ignored," the bench stated. When questioned by the court, the engineer assured the revised DPRs would be submitted by July 25. However, the judges noted the absence of any explanation as to why the firm was involved and why the IIT's expertise was bypassed.

Russia Backs Pakistan's Rusting Pride – And Sends A Message To India
Moscow/New Delhi: In a move that is bound to stir concern in New Delhi, Russia has formally signed a new industrial cooperation agreement with Pakistan – a revival attempt of the long-defunct Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) in Karachi. Described as a protocol of cooperation, the pact was signed at the Pakistani Embassy in Moscow and promises to restart and expand steel production at a facility that was once the pride of Soviet-Pakistani engineering. This deal marks a new chapter in a forgotten story – one that began more than half a century ago. Back in 1971, it was the Soviet Union that helped lay the foundation of Pakistan's largest industrial complex. Today, after decades of neglect, a trail of mounting losses and shifting political winds, Russia is circling back to finish what it once started. 'This revival, with Russia's help, is more than a business deal. It reflects our shared industrial history and a future we want to build together,' said Pakistan Prime Minister's Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar Khan during his Moscow visit. According to Pakistan's national news agency APP, the signing ceremony also reaffirmed the 'long-standing industrial partnership' between the two nations. The objective is to bring the Karachi-based steel plant back to life and boost its output, possibly restoring thousands of lost jobs and reigniting a sector that has remained idle for far too long. Also In The Race, But Left Behind For months, China too was eyeing the same prize. When Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government decided to restart the revival efforts in 2018, it first engaged a Chinese firm for negotiations. However, the talks hit a dead end. The Chinese bid faded, but the Russians, perhaps driven by nostalgia and ownership of the project's origins, never stopped knocking. Russia insisted it was the only logical choice to resuscitate the steel plant it once designed. The Kremlin saw itself not as an outsider but as a returning builder – one who knew the bones of the structure better than anyone else. A Ruin Built From Decay And Delay Once a symbol of industrial ambition, the PSM began its steep descent in 2008. Losses piled up after a slew of politically motivated hirings, combined with the blowback of the global financial crisis. By the end of the 2008-09 fiscal year, the plant had already sunk into a deficit of nearly 17 billion Pakistani rupees. That number ballooned over the next five years, touching 118.7 billion. Even as successive governments, first under the Pakistan's People's Party and later the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), watched the unit bleed. There was no coordinated effort to stop the rot. President Pervez Musharraf's regime had once seen the plant report profits of over 9.5 billion rupees in 2007-08. A decade later, by May 31, 2018, it had sunk to a terrifying 200 billion-rupee hole. The PTI came with promises of revival. What followed was a silent bidding war between Russia and China for control of the broken machine. This new agreement finally puts Moscow in the driver's seat. The Express Tribune reports that Pakistan now hopes this Russian-backed turnaround will not only rescue an industrial dinosaur but also breathe new life into a crucial sector of its crippled economy. Russia, too, appears eager to re-establish its economic footprint in South Asia, starting with steel, in a country once deeply aligned with the United States but now visibly drifting toward Moscow and Beijing.
