Braves calling up Craig Kimbrel from Triple-A after bullpen's 7-run meltdown in 9th inning vs. D-backs
Atlanta officially announced the move on Friday, adding that reliever Daysbel Hernández (2.22 ERA in 25 appearances) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation.

The decision was likely prompted by the Braves blowing a six-run lead in the ninth inning Thursday versus the Arizona Diamondbacks, leading to an 11-10 loss. Atlanta took a 10-5 lead into the ninth. Three of Arizona's first four batters reached base against Scott Blewett, including home runs by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Alek Thomas.
Raisel Iglesias relieved Blewett and didn't fare better, allowing five of the next six batters on base with RBI hits by Ketel Marte, Ildemaro Vargas and Eugenio Suárez resulting in four runs and an Arizona lead. Ultimately, five runs were charged to Blewett and Iglesias gave up the lead with the three he allowed.
"We're not a bad team. We're a good team that's playing bad," Braves manager Brian Snitker said after the game. "We're all going to be miserable, and we should. We didn't execute and put the game away, and we've got to do that."
With the loss, Atlanta dropped to 27-34, placing them fourth in the National League West and 11 games behind the first-place New York Mets. The Braves are also seven games out of the NL's third wild-card playoff berth.

In 18 minor league appearances this season (15 for Gwinnett), Kimbrel has compiled a 2.00 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 18 innings with 8 walks and 9 hits allowed.
Kimbrel, 37, pitched the first five seasons of his career with the Braves, collecting a 1.43 ERA and 186 saves in 294 appearances. He won the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year award and made four All-Star teams during his stint with Atlanta.
The right-hander was traded to the San Diego Padres before the 2015 season and he's played for six other teams since then. Last season, he had a 5.33 ERA for the Orioles in 57 appearances despite a strikeout rate of 12.6 per nine innings and was released in late September.

However, Kimbrel had a 2.80 ERA, 53 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings and 23 saves before the All-Star break.
'Hopefully, he can replicate what he did the first half of last year,' Snitker said when Atlanta signed Kimbrel in the spring. 'It would be awesome if he could come in and do that."
During his 15 MLB seasons, Kimbrel has compiled a 2.59 ERA and 440 saves with a strikeout rate of 14.1 per 9 innings.
Blewett's outing was his last for the Braves. The team announced that he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday for cash considerations. Atlanta was planning to DFA Blewett (5.51 ERA in 11 games) after Thursday's game, but worked out a deal with Baltimore.
It's a return to Baltimore for the right-hander, who appeared in two games for the Orioles before being designated for assignment and traded to Atlanta. Blewett began the season with the Minnesota Twins, but received a DFA and was picked up by the Orioles.

It has been announced that the game will resume at 1 pm on Sunday. However, the meteorologist in me, and yes, I actually am one, knew that they would probably not get the game in Saturday night. Weather warning signs and forecasts were clear. Here's a breakdown of why any narrative saying it 'came without warning' or 'there was no time to prepare for rain' is false. NWS Warned Of Rainfall In The Days And Hours Leading Up To The Game The website stated, 'Following great pomp and pageantry to celebrate the first MLB Speedway Classic, the skies opened above the famous Bristol Motor Speedway and rain delayed the start of the historic contest between the Braves and Reds by two hours and 17 minutes. The game eventually got underway but was suspended with one out in the bottom of the first inning.' The National Weather Service warned of rainfall in the days and hours leading up to the game. In the NWS Morristown weather discussion on Friday morning, meteorologists wrote, 'On Saturday, an inverted surface trough will be across the TN Valley, which should help convection develop in the afternoon. The surface trough retreats west on Sunday as the ridge strengthens, but rain chances persist with the approach of a shortwave trough and jet streak.' There is a lot of meteorological jargon there, but I will translate it. The surface and upper atmospheric conditions were primed for rainfall Saturday and into Sunday. Persistent cloud cover was draped across much of the Southeast and southern Appalachia on Saturday as a frontal system stretched across the region. On Saturday morning at 7:55 am, NWS Morristown, the office responsible for the Bristol area, tweeted, 'Rain showers with a few thunderstorms are expected to develop over us today, bringing rainfall and a low risk of flooding. If looking to attend a certain⚾️ game this evening, light showers may be lingering.' In another Tweet Saturday afternoon, NWS also shared a short-range model showing expected rainfall that evening. It was clearly going to be raining in Bristol at 6 pm (map above) and in subsequent hours. From A Climate Perspective, It Was The Rainiest Time Of The Year In Bristol Certainly, the meteorological signals were there. From a climate perspective, the State Climate Office website at East Tennessee State University provides good context. While Tennessee receives the greatest amount of precipitation during winter and spring months, the site stated, 'A secondary maximum of precipitation occurs in summer in response to thunderstorm activity. This is especially pronounced in the mountains of the east where July rainfall exceeds the precipitation of any other month.' Early August conditions are likely similar. Bristol is in the Tri-Cities region so based on the data above, I would have advised MLB to schedule this game in April, May, or September. As a reminder to all organizations, there are weather and climate experts whom you can consult on these matters, but I digress. Motivated Reasoning As noted earlier, there was a lot of 'pomp and circumstance' surrounding this event. However, as I watched players, fans, and field crews struggle in the rain, my first statement at dinner is, 'This is an epic fail. Why are they trying to play this game?' My wife Ayana is the biggest Braves fan in our home. She added, 'They would never try to play in these conditions in their home stadiums. Someone is going to get hurt.' Throughout my meteorological career, I have lamented about something called motivated reasoning. It causes people to drive through flooded roadways, finish a round of golf while it is lightning, run a 5K in dangerous heat conditions, or stay put as a major hurricane approaches. What is motivated reasoning? It is process by which people or organizations consume information from a biased lens or ignore it altogether because there is a needed outcome. Given the primetime TV exposure, media presence, massive fan presence, and overall hype, I could certainly understand why there would be motivated reasoning to get this game in. MLB is going to try again today. Candidly, they are not quite out of the woods. The official forecast for Bristol, Tennessee calls for partly sunny skies with chance of showers or thunderstorms. The probability of precipitation is 30%. It is also important to remember that 30% is not 0%, so if it rains, that was in the forecast. Let me add one additional meteorological nugget. Complex, mountainous terrain can be a challenge for weather radar beams. Experienced meteorologists can often decipher what they see in these regions better than the average person looking at their favorite radar app.

PHILADELPHIA -- All-Star starter Tarik Skubal won his first game since June and Javier Baez homered, doubled and knocked in four runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Philadelphia Phillies and ace Zack Wheeler 7-5 on Saturday. Skubal (11-3) limited the Phillies (62-48) to three runs and five hits over seven innings while striking out 10. He struck out six of the first seven batters he faced, and didn't relent until the seventh. With AL Central-leading Detroit ahead 5-0, Bryce Harper opened with a single, J.T. Realmuto knocked him in with a double before Nick Castellanos golfed a two-run homer to center, cutting the Tigers' lead to two runs. Baez added a two-run double in the eighth, but Harper (three hits) negated that with a two-out, two-run shot — his 18th of the season — off reliever Will Vest. But, Detroit's Kyle Finnegan finished off the Phils with a four-out save. Wheeler (9-5) took the loss, allowing solo home runs by Colt Keith and Kerry Carpenter in the third inning, then a two-run shot by Baez in the seventh.
