Since the Birkin sold for 10 million dollars, Social Media has gone into a meltdown trying to find out who the 'anonymous buyer' from Japan is. Some pointed out that the buyer apparently "has over 80 pieces - 30 of which are rare or exotic leather".
A report on Japan Times said that Valuence Japan, a Tokyo-based luxury goods reseller, confirmed that it was the buyer.
Valuence Japan is a key subsidiary of Valuence Holdings Inc., and was established in 2011 that specialises in the reuse business. The company primarily buys, auctions, and sells luxury brand goods, precious metals, watches, bags, jewelry, antiques, art objects, and other valuable items both within Japan and internationally.
It also operates multiple retail stores in Japan, offering rare and one-of-a-kind pre-owned luxury items. It also runs online and offline auction platforms, including 'STAR BUYERS AUCTION,' which allows international participation.
The original Birkin bag was made for British and French actress, singer and designer Jane Birkin.
The Most Expensive Bag Ever Sold At An Auction
As per Forbes, the Hermes handbag became the most expensive handbag ever sold at an auction. It went for $8.2 million before fees.
Previously, the record for the most expensive handbag sold at an auction was set by a diamond-encrusted crocodile skin Hermes Kelly 28. It fetched $513,000 million at Christie's in Hong Kong in 2021.
Two Auctions Before This
Sotheby's official website claims that the original Hermes bag had been sold twice since Jane Birkin first auctioned it in 1994, with the proceeds going to an AIDS charity.
The first-ever Birkin bag is saddle-stitched and comes in a jet black shade. It is made entirely of leather and consists of gold hardware, contributing to its extra dose of regal charm.
The Story Of The First Birkin
The OG Birkin, stuff of legends for four decades, was made as a pure 'utility' bag for actress Jane Birkin.
About four decades ago, Jane Birkin and the then-head of Hermes, Jean-Louis Dumas, had a chance meeting on a Paris-London flight. Jane told Jean that she was unable to find a bag suited to the needs of a young mother, like her. The Birkin was sketched on an air-sickness bag, and the Dumas took it home to create the world's most famous handbag.
That's how the Hermes bag was born in 1984, with enough room to keep even baby bottles.
The Birkin Isn't For Everyone
The Hermes bag, produced in limited numbers, has maintained an aura of exclusivity. The accessory is loved by celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez and the Kardashians.
Sotheby's global head of handbags, Morgane Halimi, explained what the Birkin bag means in the fashion universe. She said, "There are rare moments in the world of fashion when an object transcends trends and becomes a legend. Jane Birkin's Original Birkin bag is such a moment."

Cryptic poser: Does your rival find you fit and proper for crypto biz?
MUMBAI: Amid the crypto frenzy fuelled by Trump and the digital asset making inroads, new players planning to set up shop in India are dealing with a curious rule: they need 'fit and proper' certificates-not from government agencies or any of financial market regulators, but from existing cryptocurrency service a regulatory void, judging the 'fit and proper' quality of a new applicant has been left to existing virtual digital asset (VDA) service providers (SPs). Some of the applicants are discovering that the rule, introduced early this year, not only runs into conflict of interests, but poses other complexities as cryptos are vulnerable to money laundering and cyber heists. Regulations in most financial markets too insist on such a certificate to evaluate the integrity, ethical standing, and track record of new managers and entities. For instance, in safeguarding the interests of depositors and investors, persons applying for a banking license and intermediaries like stock brokers have to qualify as 'fit and proper'. But, here the assessment is done by the respective regulator (RBI or Sebi)-and not by peers or other business and competing organisations in the case of VDAs, the rule stems from a January 2025 communique to VDA SPs from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). An agency under the ministry of finance, FIU is dedicated to curb money laundering and terror finance. VDASPs like crypto platforms exchanges, brokers, and custody service firms providing crypto wallets are "reporting entities" sharing information, as banks do, with the 'fit and proper' is one of the conditions a VDA SP must satisfy to register itself with FIU. Failure to register is in itself a non-compliance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. NO DEFINED PARAMETERSAccording to the January 2025 notification, one of the steps towards registration requires "fit and proper certificate from the FIU IND registered VDA SP(s), in all cases where the applicant VDA SP is into relationship/agreement (B2B/broker/other relationship etc) with the former (either ongoing/prospective/intended)."This widely-worded directive can be interpreted to mean that a new applicant (be it a crypto exchange or an intermediary) could require multiple certificates from different SPs. A custody provider may partner with multiple exchanges and intermediaries, while an exchange may draw liquidity from another platform. According to Purushottam Anand, advocate and founder of Crypto Legal, a Bengaluru-based blockchain and crypto-focused law firm, "The 'fit and proper' requirement effectively introduces a disqualification criterion for entities seeking registration as VDASP. Yet, it provides no defined parameters or standards for registered VDASPs to apply during their assessment. There is a complete lack of guidance on the manner, scope, or extent of scrutiny to be conducted by existing VDASPs. In the absence of clarity, new applicants may be compelled to disclose sensitive and confidential business information to potential competitors. Courts have consistently held that vague, arbitrary, and subjective conditions-particularly those introduced through delegated legislation-are legally untenable and liable to be struck down." The requirement may prove self-defeating where an applicant is compelled to seek certification from a competitor, said Harshal Bhuta, partner at the CA firm P. R. Bhuta & Co. "Moreover, obtaining such certification from several service providers may not be straightforward, given the recent cyberattacks and the liability associated with issuing such certificates. A more effective alternative would be for the government to provide recognition to Self-Regulatory Organisations (SROs) and authorise them to issue certificates," said the past one year, two Indian crypto exchanges lost substantial amounts in cyberattacks. And law enforcement authorities fear that cryptos are misused to move money across the border, bypassing banking channels. Coins withdrawn from an exchange wallet can be transferred to private wallets and other wallet owners in various jurisdictions. Recently, FIU advised platforms to keep a watch on transactions linked to persons in border areas. Data requests from the agency has also gone up, said an exchange official."The ministry has streamlined the registration process, which includes having an in-person meeting with the FIU-IND, submission of prescribed documents, etc. These requirements should be carefully looked into by applicants, especially the clause which requires the VDA-SP to furnish a 'fit and proper' certificate from FIU-IND registered VDA-SPs in all cases where the applicant VDA-SP is into a relationship with the former," said Raghav Bajaj, counsel, Khaitan & to FIU and the crypto industry lobby BharatWeb3 went unanswered till the time of going to press.

All set for second innings: From havildar to naib subedar, over 1,100 ex-servicemen participate in job fair in Ahmedabad
After serving for 17 years in the aviation corps of the Indian Army as a havildar, Vipul Kumar, now 40, retired in 2020. For the last few years, he has been looking for jobs but found nothing suitable. On Friday, he donned his grey shirt and dark brown pants for another shot at job-seeking. A native of Surendranagar with a B A English degree, Kumar was among the nearly 1,100 aspirants who participated in the job fair organised by the Directorate General of Resettlement (DGR), under the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare (DESW), Ministry of Defence, at the Ahmedabad Military Station Friday. 'What stood out for me is that every ex-serviceman has a unique background, and the companies that came seemed to reflect that diversity. I have applied in five firms. While nothing has been finalised yet, a few have given positive indications after initial resume- screening and interviews. For many ex-servicemen (ESMs) like me, this fair has been like a bridge, connecting us directly with employers and giving us a genuine shot at a second career,' he told The Indian Express. According to a statement from the Gujarat Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO), ESMs from the Army, Navy and Air Force registered for the fair that saw the participation of 50 corporate employers offering more than 1,000 jobs. Initiated in 2014 by the DGR, the event was being held after a gap of six years. Devjibhai Vanvi, 46, from Gir Somnath has been working as a site manager with a Japanese firm for the past five years. 'I came to the job fair looking for better opportunities. I submitted my resume to four or five companies, including firms from the pharmaceutical sector and GIFT City. The response was encouraging; many of them assured they would get in touch with me for the next round,' said Vanvi who retired as a naib subedar in 2019, having served the Army for 22 years. The event was inaugurated by Commodore Vikrant Kishore, Principal Director, DGR, who emphasised the government's commitment to resettling ex-servicemen, most of whom are retired between the ages of 35 and 40 to maintain a youthful profile in the armed forces. 'They still carry family responsibilities and need a second career. It's our collective duty to support their rehabilitation through appropriate training and employment opportunities,' he said. Kishore noted that DESW works through three key units — DGR, Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), and Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB) to run welfare schemes for ESMs, war widows and battle casualties. These include job reservations and self-employment opportunities. However, given the limited scope of government jobs, he urged the private sector to come forward and provide the ESMs with opportunities. He assured the corporate sector of the capability of ESMs, highlighting their experience in operating fighter jets, tanks, submarines, and complex machinery. 'They can be seamlessly integrated into roles involving public safety and beyond,' he said, adding that DGR has planned 18 job fairs for 2025-26. He also highlighted the new online registration platform, allowing ESMs and companies to connect directly. Referring to the Central government's Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, he said these require skilled and dependable manpower. 'And who better than our ESMs?', Kishore asked, urging the companies to inform DGR about the skills of the contemporary market so that targeted training programmes can be designed for the job-seekers. Suresh Solanki, 42, who retired from the post of sipahi in 2020, after 17 years of service, said he has shared his resume with five to six companies. 'They have assured me that they will get back,' said the Ahmedabad resident. Though he expressed happiness with the job fair, Solanki said most companies didn't share details about the salary on offer. 'So, I will have to wait and see how it actually pans out.' Vimal Ambani, former Chairman of CII Gujarat and MD of Tower Overseas Ltd, said the skills of ESMs align perfectly with the needs of the Indian industry. 'In a state where industrial accidents are on the rise, the discipline and rigour that ESMs bring to the table can be a game-changer,' he said. For 49-year-old Ajay Patel, who retired as Havildar in 2017 after 19 years of service, the job fair gave a glimpse of what the corporate world expects. 'Five companies responded positively, but I shortlisted only three based on location preferences. I already have an interview lined up with one of them next Saturday,' said the Amreli resident. Chief guest, Maj Gen Gaurav Bagga, GOC 11 RAPID, said, 'When you hire an ESM, you're not just getting a worker. You're getting a trained manager, someone who has risen through the ranks, learned leadership through experience, and led men in combat.' Other notable attendees included Himanshu Patel (Senior VP, Vadodara Chamber of Commerce & Industry), Apurva Shah (Senior VP, GCCI), Pathik Patwari (Director, Nexus Group and past GCCI president), and Col Vijay Pandey (Head of Security, Adani Power & AESL). For Pandy Pankil Kumar, a 42-year-old retired havildar, the job fair was a chance to get back into employment after a yearlong break. 'After retiring, I took a year off to give myself some breathing space and reflect. Today, I felt that decision paid off. The only concern is that some of the jobs being offered at far-off locations come with salaries that don't quite justify the move. Companies should consider offering better compensation for roles that require relocation. That said, the job fair was a great platform, especially for those of us who don't have a strong network or corporate background. It helped us connect with the right people,' he said. Vishal, a representative of ZURU Tech, one of the recruiting companies, said, 'We are interested in the Defence sector and believe in the Army's potential. It is a proud moment for us to be here.'
