Marcus Fraser backs Richard King to pass the Celtic Park test

The 30-year-old defender, who was once a youngster at the Hoops, believes the Jamaican defender has all the right attributes to succeed in Scotland Richard King's defensive partner Marcus Fraser has backed him to pass the Celtic Park test in St Mirren's Scottish Premiership opener. ‌ The Saints pitch up in the east end of Glasgow tomorrow afternoon to face Celtic, where they will kick off the Premiership campaign in search of a fourth top-six finish in a row. ‌ It is a match that is identical to the curtain closer last season where Stephen Robinson's boys were minutes away from a famous win against the Hoops before James Forrest netted a late equaliser to make it 2-2. ‌ A host of new signings have walked through the front door at the SMiSA Stadium this summer, but one player who has already made his mark in the Premier Sports Cup group stage is Jamaican defender King. Fraser is impressed with what he has seen from his new team-mate in a short space of time, saying he has everything a modern-day defender needs. 'Playing alongside Richard, you can see the attributes he's got,' he said ahead of the season opener. ‌ 'It's still early doors for all the boys. We've not seen a lot of them in games. Everything is positive with them all. 'But Richard, as he's been in the longest of all the new boys, has stood out. It's good to have all of them on board. I look forward to working with them.' The former Ross County defender is entering his sixth season with the Buddies after joining in the summer of 2020. ‌ However, he was once on the books of the Green and White when he was a youngster after making his professional debut against Stade Rennais in the Europa League in 2011. Now, 14 seasons later and having experienced the heat of Celtic Park as an opponent on countless occasions, Fraser believes the experience of playing in front of 60,000 fans tomorrow could be a boost for the highly-rated Jamaican defender and all the new signings. But Fraser said all Saints players are travelling to Parkhead on a mission to cause an upset. ‌ 'I'd imagine when Richard first walks into the stadium there will be the 'wow factor',' he said. 'There will be 60,000 fans on flag day and a party atmosphere. 'But it's up to us to ruin that. 'We'll look to do a lot of things that we've done well in recent seasons at Celtic Park.' ‌ The 30-year-old is also taking inspiration from last season's match against Brendan Rodgers's side. He said: 'We wouldn't have got Europe even if we'd won. But it would have been nice to have won there and gone out on a high on the last day of the season. 'We got a draw and, on the day, probably deserved to win. I don't think Celtic had a shot on target for the first 45 minutes, which is rare at Celtic Park. 'There are a lot of things we need to do well on Sunday and replicate that last game.'

There has to be ambition from everyone – Brendan Rodgers sends contract message

Rodgers is entering the final season of his three-year deal and told principal shareholder Dermot Desmond and chief executive Michael Nicholson that he is not interested in performing a maintenance job. The Celtic manager reiterated he would be going nowhere of his own volition before his contract expires but his long-term future remains unclear. Asked about his contract situation ahead of Celtic's William Hill Premiership opener against St Mirren on Sunday, Rodgers said: 'Dermot and Michael and I had a conversation over the summer on where we were at. 'I said: 'I'm very happy here'. There's conditions we want to be able to improve and be better because I'm not the type of manager that's good at maintaining anything. If it's just something to maintain, I'm not the manager of Celtic. It'll be someone else. 'But to build and grow and develop and push, then of course I love being at Celtic. 'I'm not the one that's going to sit here and just maintain levels. My commitment here to Celtic is this is a really fast-moving club and you have to keep moving, move quickly. 'It's one of the biggest clubs in world football. It has a demand and an expectation on it and the only way you get better within that is by improving and developing.' Rodgers stressed he was not saying the club had to match his own ambition. 'I don't want to be really arrogant to say that,' he said. 'Celtic clearly has an expectation and should have an expectation because of the size of the club we are, and what the demands are here. Brendan Rodgers issued an update on his own contract situation (Niall Carson/PA) 'What I'm saying, for clarity, I love being here. And, yes, there's been some challenges on and off the pitch since I've arrived, but that's management, that's coaching. But in the main, I've absolutely loved it here and I will continue to do so however long that is. But like I said, there has to be that ambition from everyone. 'In terms of my situation, I'm relaxed on it only because I know what I give every single day. And if the club choose to offer (a contract) and see that as the way forward, great. If not, it doesn't really matter to me in relation to what I give to the job. 'My ambition is for Celtic. It's not for me. My ambition is for Celtic to be the best that it can be. 'I've been in the game quite a long time now. So I think I understand what we need to succeed. We did that last year. We brought in certain players that helped our profile when we moved into the Champions League. And those players really helped us in the Champions League. 'So my ambition now is to keep us going in that direction. And that's what our conversations are about.' Shin Yamada is Celtic's main attacking addition this summer (Jane Barlow/PA) Rodgers has stressed the need to bolster their attacking options in recent weeks. Shin Yamada arrived as a belated replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi but the sale of Nicolas Kuhn to Como has compounded a lack of wide players following the long-term knee injury Jota suffered in May. Rodgers said: 'There's no doubt I would have liked to have had players in now, but it's not the case. I'm not going to kill my own joy and overthink. I focus on what's here. We know the work that we need to do and it's my responsibility to convince the club that we really need them. 'Clearly, I'm not doing that job as well as maybe what I can, but I will continue to pursue that because it's something that's really important for us.'

Brendan Rodgers must convince Celtic board over transfers as priority position revealed

The Parkhead boss has vowed tnot to 'kill his joy' and overthink things as he gives the lowdown on Simpson-Pusey Ambition. That's what Brendan Rodgers wants the Celtic board to show this summer. ‌ Six new signings have checked in. More than a dozen players have headed out - including £17million man Nicolas Kuhn. ‌ It's clear the Hoops are short in key areas ahead of Sunday's curtain-raiser at home to St Mirren. ‌ There's still more than four weeks to go before the transfer window slams shut. So Rodgers - at least publicly - is refusing to hit the panic button just yet. But with the £40million Champions League play-offs on the horizon, there's no denying Celts are currently weaker than the squad that ended last season in tears at Hampden. Fans are crying out for reinforcements. Yet Rodgers won't compromise just to get bodies through the door. Instead, he's willing to play the waiting game - even if it's far from ideal. Asked if there's a greater urgency to get players in before the first leg on August 19/20, he said: 'No, I think every coach will tell you and every manager, you would want your players in for the first day of pre-season to prepare them. "That's why you do pre-season, to prepare. But if they're not available or you can't get the right players that you want, then of course you have to wait. ‌ "I'm experienced enough now as a manager to not get frustrated. You become quite philosophical on these types of topics now, and I just know where we need to improve, and I'm sure by the end of the window that we will do. "And of course, the quicker that can be, the better.' Celtic have a habit of leaving it late. Last summer, they smashed their transfer record with an £11million swoop for Arne Engels and a £6m deal for Auston Trusty on deadline day. ‌ And there's every chance it could be a similar story this time around, with plenty of business still to be done. Rodgers said: "I don't conclude the deals. There are always time lags on them for different reasons. "But I think that, come the end of that period, of course, we would love to get players in earlier. ‌ "There's no doubt I would have liked to have players in now, but it's not the case. "So I'm not going to kill my own joy and overthink stuff. I focus on what's here. ‌ "We know the work that we need to do, and it's my responsibility to convince the club that we really need them. "I'm not doing that job as well as maybe what I can, but I will continue to pursue that because it's something that's important for us." Right now, Celtic are a shadow of the side that blitzed Manchester City and Chelsea in pre-season friendlies 12 months ago. ‌ But Rodgers is confident the four-in-a-row champions will end the summer stronger than they started - with fresh firepower top of his wish list. He said: 'We've still got a wee bit of work to do. I think that it's a huge credit to the guys who are here and how well they've worked. "But the squad will hopefully look different again come the end of the window. I think it's very clear we need to improve in the front end of the pitch. ‌ "The attacking department is always and will always be the strength of my teams, and we've lost important players in that area, and we need to replace them. "Every window is important. I don't think just this window. I think it's important this summer because of the needs of the team. The needs of the team are clear. "If you watch Celtic or you know football, you see where we need to improve. ‌ "But that doesn't change. Every window we want to come out of it being stronger as a squad, where we can, and this window is no different.' Manchester City starlet Jahmai Simpson-Pusey has agreed a season-long loan switch to Parkhead. The 19-year-old - tipped by Pep Guardiola as a future Etihad regular - will provide extra competition at the back alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Liam Scales and Dane Murray. Rodgers said: 'He's a very gifted young player, obviously coming through the system there at Manchester City. "His profile fits very much what we want from a centre-half. He's quick, he's dominant, he's a good defender, and of course, at Celtic, your centre-halves need to be able to progress the ball. That's a big strength of his. "So we've taken him on loan for a year. We always need all our centre-halves at Celtic; you play so many games, so many intense games, and he'll join our squad. ‌ "He's obviously a little bit behind because he hasn't played so many games over the course of pre-season, but we've brought him through for the rest of the season, and hopefully, we can close that one out. "Can he compete for a regular starting spot? Yeah, I think all the players are here to compete. ‌ "There's always the opportunity for any player to come in and play, no matter how old. I've put young players in front of international players before. "So every player that comes in has the opportunity to start. But yeah, we'll assess him on where he's at and his fitness and his football when he comes in and take it from there.' Celtic have also been keeping tabs on towering Hammarby defender Viktor Eriksson. But Rodgers says Simpson-Pusey will be the final centre-back signing of the window. ‌ He said: 'Adding him to our group makes us stronger in that department. There are lots of links with various players, but yeah, I would see him being our… I say last defender, last central defender.' Rodgers could still push for an understudy to Kieran Tierney, despite Hayato Inamura's impressive pre-season displays turning heads. He added: "For guys who have only been playing it for a short time, I think they have done really well. I'm assessing it every day and taking a real close look at certain aspects of his game. "He's done well, and we have to make sure that by the end of the month, we've got it absolutely right for us going forward into certainly, into the next period. "In fairness to the boy, as I said, his plan was that he'd come in and then probably go out on loan. "I mentioned that right at the very beginning. That was the plan for him. But he's come in and coped well. But we'll see over the coming weeks where we're at."
