Nga: Housing reform among key pillars of 13MP

KUALA LUMPUR: Housing reform will be one of the main pillars of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which will be tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on July 31. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the Madani government is committed to introducing comprehensive reforms aimed at improving housing affordability, accessibility, and sustainability for all Malaysians. "What I can share is that one of the main pillars of the 13MP is housing reform," he said, without revealing details on the reform. He said this after a walkabout in the city held in conjunction with the launch of Kuala Lumpur Architecture Week 2025 today. The 13MP, which sets the direction for the country's development from 2026 to 2030, is the first by the Madani government under Anwar's administration as the country's tenth prime minister. Meanwhile, when asked about Anwar's call for every new housing project to be comprehensively planned, complete with facilities such as schools, preschools and nurseries, Nga said; "It shows that the prime minister has always been committed and attentive in giving special attention to housing matters." Speaking at the Groundbreaking Ceremony and Launch of the SkyWorld Pearlmont Rumah Bakat Madani project in Penang yesterday, Anwar said the government will not approve any housing project that does not meet these basic needs. Nga added the Rumah Bakat Madani project in Penang, the largest affordable housing initiative to date, reflects the government's strong dedication to enhancing the wellbeing of the people and expanding access to home ownership. The project consists of 900-square-foot freehold condominiums, with each unit will come with modern features and access to shared facilities such as a swimming pool, gym, sports courts, multipurpose hall, surau, kindergarten, food stalls, children's playground, central park and a vertical school.

‘Not happy? Let MPs decide or wait for GE'

Honouring indigenous traditions: Anwar participating in an event with Orang Asli dancers at the opening ceremony of the national-level Unity Week celebration in the vicinity of Batu Kawan Stadium. — Bernama NIBONG TEBAL: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim cautioned that any legitimate changes in government should follow constitutional procedures and not be attempted through street demonstrations. Responding to recent protests calling for his resignation, the Prime Minister said while the government does not oppose peaceful assemblies, any transition of power should be carried out through democratic and lawful means to uphold stability and the rule of law. 'If someone believes that the Prime Minister no longer commands the majority in Parliament, they should follow the Dewan Rakyat Speaker's advice and file a motion of no confidence. 'Let it be decided through votes in Parliament, if there are the numbers. If not, wait until the next general election. 'You cannot try to topple the government just because you are dissatisfied or impatient,' he said at the National Unity Week celebration. Anwar gave assurance that the government is always willing to listen to the people and does not govern by inciting hatred or destruction. 'We do not govern through anger or hatred, but by listening, reviewing and improving,' he said, dismissing allegations that the government suppresses freedom of speech. 'Don't think it's all easy. Building (a nation) takes time; destroying it is far easier. This country remains peaceful because the people are more mature and do not give in to incitement that causes division.' Anwar said on the international stage, Malaysia's stability has attracted global attention, with Kuala Lumpur recently hosting key discussions during the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting. 'Kuala Lumpur has recently drawn global attention, and for the first time since Donald Trump became president, high-level talks took place between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi. 'They both held discussions, but more importantly, Malaysia was given space (to host such engagements). For the first time ever, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also held high-level discussions with Rubio,' he said. National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang gave an update on the ongoing National Unity Index, a key instrument to measure and strengthen national unity. 'The National Unity Index is expected to achieve a score of 0.7, which reflects the level of unity among Malaysians. 'This index assesses key aspects such as inter-ethnic relations, perceptions of national identity, and social trust, and serves as a main reference in formulating policies and ministry initiatives aimed at strengthening national unity.' Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, in his speech, reaffirmed the state government's strong commitment to community development and social unity through grassroots initiatives and inclusive representation. 'The state prioritises community development as a key agenda. 'This is evident through the appointment of the Village Community Management Councils, which remain active, attentive and close to the people across all walks of life,' he said.

[UPDATED] Anwar: I will not step down

GEORGE TOWN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated that he will not step down from his post despite calls for him to do so by the opposition. "Insya Allah, I will not step down. "If I steal the people's money, then they can call for me to step down. But I did not do so. "All government contracts go through an open tender process," he said in his speech at the groundbreaking ceremony of Kompleks Madani Teluk Kumbar here today. Elaborating, Anwar said his detractors could use Parliament to criticise him. "If they have enough numbers, they can bring a vote (of no confidence). That is the way. "They can pull support from any member of Parliament to support them. If I lose, I will step down nicely. That is the peaceful way. "If not, they can wait until the next election. When that will be (the general election), I haven't announced yet. "So, for now, let us preserve this peace and unity in our country," he added, noting that many countries in the region are facing turbulence. In his speech, Anwar said old issues related to him, often raised by certain parties, were no longer relevant — especially after nearly three years of him leading the country. He said any previous allegations had been clarified and that his stance remained consistent in rejecting abuse of power. "My case is old. Now I have been the prime minister for almost three years. "I have also said in the Cabinet meeting that if there are any cases, I will not defend them. "If there are leaders who had wealths of RM100 million, they need to come forward and explain, answer for themselves (if investigated)," he said. Anwar also lashed out at politicians who he said want to "test him while he is in power." "Now that they are no longer in power, they gathered to hit out at us, saying we are oppressing the people, protecting the rich and oppressing the poor. "But they forget," he said.
