Cops bust ring selling cocaine-laced vapes, S'porean among 4 nabbed
PETALING JAYA : Police have busted a syndicate distributing vapes containing cocaine-laced liquids with the arrest of four suspects, including a Singaporean.
Bukit Aman narcotics crime investigation department acting director Mat Zani @ Salahuddin Che Ali said the four, aged 25 to 57, were arrested near a hotel at Ampang Jaya on June 19, Utusan Malaysia reported.
Police arrested three of the suspects in an MPV while another suspect was nabbed at the lobby of the hotel.
He said the Singaporean, 31, is believed to be the mastermind of the syndicate.
Police found 10 boxes containing 4,958 vape cartridges in the MPV. The cartridges were filled with 9.42 litres of liquid containing cocaine, with an estimated street value of RM7.29 million.
Mat Zani said the syndicate had been operating since March from a luxury condominium unit they rented for RM300 a night in the city centre.
The condo served as their base for packaging the vapes before distributing them overseas.
He said the drugs were believed to have been smuggled into the country through a southern state.
'We believe the syndicate had used Malaysia as a transit point to smuggle drugs abroad through courier services. Each vape cartridge had 1.9ml (of cocaine), sold at RM1,500, and was good for 100 puffs.
'This is the latest threat to our country since cocaine is hard to acquire in Southeast Asia,' he said, adding that he believed the vapes were also being sold among the 'elites' in the country.
One of the four suspects tested positive for ketamine, and two of them had criminal records for drug offences. They have been remanded until June 26 to assist in the investigations.

‘They loved him': Grandfather denies parents neglected or killed autistic grandson Zayn Rayyan
PETALING JAYA, July 24 — The grandfather of the late Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin told the Sessions Court here yesterday that his son and daughter-in-law would never have neglected or harmed the six-year-old, describing them as devoted parents. Zahari Mohd Reba, 57, testified during the defence proceedings of Ismanira Abdul Manaf, saying both she and her husband, Zaim Ikhwan, loved their autistic son dearly. 'Zayn was my beloved grandson. If either of his parents were not working, I would make sure they came over to spend time with him. 'He was very close to his parents. I believe my son (Zaim Ikhwan) and daughter-in-law (Ismanira) were not involved in his death,' Zahari said during examination-in-chief by defence lawyer Haresh Mahadevan. The second defence witness added that he was heartbroken by the loss of his eldest grandchild and deeply loved Zayn. When questioned by Deputy Public Prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, Zahari confirmed that Zayn, who was autistic, required constant care and shared a close bond with both parents. He also agreed with the prosecution's suggestion that Ismanira and Zaim treated Zayn and his younger sibling equally. On Monday, Judge Dr Syahliza Warnoh ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case and ordered Ismanira to enter her defence. Her husband Zaim Ikhwan, 30, was discharged and acquitted of the same charge. The couple had been accused of neglecting Zayn in a manner likely to cause physical harm between noon on December 5 and 9.55pm on December 6, 2023, in the vicinity of Block R of Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai and a nearby river. They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code. If convicted, the offence carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' jail, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both. The trial continues today. — Bernama

Bukit Aman: Six Malaysians detained in Cambodia over UK-bound drug smuggling case identified
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has identified six Malaysians who were detained by Cambodian authorities on suspicion of attempting to smuggle nearly 62 kilogrammes of cannabis to the United Kingdom via Phnom Penh International Airport on July 16. Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the suspects were all men aged between 27 and 70. He said preliminary information regarding the arrests was obtained through the Foreign Ministry, but no official notification had been received from the Cambodian authorities to date. 'PDRM will work with the Foreign Ministry through the Malaysian Embassy in Cambodia to obtain further details and investigation outcomes from the Cambodian authorities. Further investigation will be carried out to identify the syndicates involved,' he told Bernama when contacted yesterday. He said initial investigations had yet to determine whether the case was linked to any international drug trafficking syndicates operating from Malaysia. In a related development, Hussein advised Malaysians to be more cautious and not to fall easily for online job offers promising high salaries, especially those involving the delivery of packages overseas without knowledge of their contents. He also reminded the public to remain vigilant against the modus operandi of international drug syndicates that target Malaysians as drug mules. Yesterday, The Phnom Penh Post reported that the six men were arrested by Cambodia's Anti-Drug Department in collaboration with customs and airport authorities, with the drugs found in four suitcases. The suspects were believed to be planning to travel to London via Hong Kong. All six are expected to be charged under Article 40 of Cambodia's Law on Drug Control. — Bernama
