Police mistake crystal sugar for meth, 2 Kerala men jailed for five months

KOZHIKODE: It was last November that Biju Mathew and Manikandan were arrested by Kozhikode Nadakkavu police with what officers alleged was methamphetamine. The two were remand for five months. Last month, however, they were released after chemical tests revealed that the material seized from them was actually crystal sugar.
Biju, a 49-year-old from Kolichal in Kasaragod, is a Gulf-returned driver who went on to drive a private bus on the Kanhangad-Panathur route for decades. He had known Manikandan, 46, of Varam in Kannur, from their earlier days working on container lorries. 'I had just lost my job. I contacted Manikandan seeking job opportunities and it was he who told me about an opening for a container lorry driver in Kozhikode. And on November 25, 2024, I travelled from Kanhangad to take up the work, while Manikandan arrived from Mangaluru. We both rented a room at a lodge in Nadakkavu. Manikandan had with him a 100g pack of crystal sugar that he had bought from Mangaluru. We had some of the contents at night. The Dansaf squad nabbed us while we were on our way for breakfast the next morning. The team surrounded us and handcuffed us. They took the remaining crystal sugar from Manikandan's pocket and accused us of possessing methamphetamine,' recounted Biju.
He said that despite pleading innocence, the officers were adamant. Meanwhile, Manikandan fainted at the spot and was shifted to hospital while Biju was moved to Nadakkavu police station. 'We asked them to carry out a blood test to confirm whether we had used drugs or examine our phones for any sort of communication about drug sales. But the officers ignored us. They could have checked our bank accounts for suspicious transactions. I just had Rs 20 in my account at the time,' said Biju.
Later, the duo were sent to Kozhikode district jail. Since they couldn't afford an advocate, the government arranged one. On April 24 this year, lab results confirmed their innocence. 'My family members, relatives, neighbours, and even my 75-year-old mother, who is sick, suspected me. Though my mother is now convinced of my innocence, I'm still regarded a drug addict in my parish and locality. I have not even seen methamphetamine. In the FIR, police added that we had confessed to the crime. We were not given the opportunity to make our case,' said Biju.
According to police, there was no delay on their part. 'The holdup at the forensic department's end is normal. Moreover, as the crystal sugar in the packet was in the form of finer granules, it put us off,' an officer said.
'Hundreds of NDPS cases are reported in the district and sometimes officers are unable to confirm the substance. In such cases, we have to wait for forensic test results. We had sent the samples on time,' said Prajeesh N, SHO, Nadakkavu station.

17 arrests, 11 FIRs daily: Haryana drug fight hits new high

Chandigarh: With an average of 17 arrests and 11 FIRs daily in the first six months of the year, Haryana's drug fight is at a new high. From Jan to June, police registered 1,858 FIRs under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, a 10.81% increase compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB). Arrests also climbed nearly 28%, with 3,051 people taken into custody. Drug seizures have surged as well. Heroin confiscations rose by 62.28%, cocaine by 93.15%, and MDMA by 86.21%. Meanwhile, seizures of tablets, opium mixer camper, opium plants, and injections have seen declines. The data also showed a 28.75% increase in serious drug-related cases compared to the same period last year. Arrests of suspects from outside Haryana increased by 34.5%, highlighting efforts to dismantle interstate smuggling networks. Cases involving multiple accused also nearly doubled, from 471 last year to 850 this year. O P Singh, DGP, HSNCB, informed that what stands out this year is the state's sharper focus on large-scale cases. "In 2025 so far, Haryana registered 233 commercial quantity cases, up from 166 last year —a nearly 29% jump. These cases involved larger amounts of drugs, often linked to organised networks. We are now working with a "top-down and bottom-up" approach — trying to track both the street-level suppliers and the big players behind the scenes, including financiers and logistics operators," Singh said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Investire è più facile che mai BG SAXO Scopri di più Undo Preventive detentions under the PIT-NDPS Act rose from 8 to 39 this year, and property seizures linked to drug profits have grown to Rs 87.19 lakh from Rs 23.40 lakh last year. Delay in appointing scientific officers, staff in forensic science labs: Kerala HC seeks report

The Kerala High Court has sought a report from the District Judiciary Registrar of the High Court regarding the pendency of criminal trials in the State owing to the delay in appointing scientific officers and other staff in forensic science laboratories. The Bench consisting of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice C. Jayachandran issued the order while considering a petition filed by Kerala State Legal Services Authority (KeLSA) seeking a directive to the State government and the Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC) to recruit adequate number of scientific assistants in the forensic labs. The KeLSA alleged that the vacancies and the failure to appoint scientific assistants in the labs adversely impacted the conduct of trials, particularly in Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases. The KeLSA also referred to delays in appointing special public prosecutors in POCSO courts. The PSC's counsel said that there were procedural requirements and inherent time lag involved in appointments. Stating that continued inaction would affect Kerala's criminal justice system, the court directed the government and the PSC to coordinate and ensure that the vacancies are filled without delay.
