12-year-old Comrades cheerleader explains kind motive behind act that captured the hearts of South Africans
12-year-old Maddyson Shepard has captured the hearts of thousands of South Africans after enthusiastically cheering exhausted runners at last weekend's Comrades Marathon.
In a video which went viral in the past week, the Grade 7 learner from Northlands Primary School in Durban was seen giving high-fives and enthusiastic cheers to runners, even jogging alongside them for brief stretches.
The barefoot cheerleader has been widely praised for her display of pure selflessness, with her warmth and energy becoming emblematic of the Comrades spirit of unity, perseverance and heart.
'I just thought if I were running, I'd love someone to cheer me on,' she said softly, at a special event held at her school this week, where representatives of fast food chain Wimpy presented her with gift packages and vouchers.

Picture: murdahbongz/Instagram South Africans love a Gospel song at groove. In a one-off collaboration with the Soweto Gospel Choir, dance music producer Mörda Bongz says he wants to give people what they seem to yearn for when requesting gospel ditties at groove. 'I want this music to bring peace and joy. I want people to dance, to feel free,' said Mörda, whose real name is Bongani Mohosana. On Mandela Day, the former half of the duo Black Motion will take to the stage at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg to perform with the renowned choir in the Bassline Fest Presents show titled 'History of House'. The concert, presented by the South African Music Performance Rights Association (Sampra), is expected to be a soulful and energetic fusion of Afro house, Amapiano, gospel, and timeless house classics. 'We can't wait to showcase our take on these evergreen house classics, especially doing this on stage with Mörda for the first time,' shared the Soweto Gospel Choir's Shimmy Jiyane. The ensemble performed the album earlier this year in their three month tour of Australasia where they performed in cities like Perth and Auckland. The History of House Concert is a collaborative effort between Bassline, broadcaster BET, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, as it'll be hosted on Mandela Day. As part of the celebration, attendees are encouraged to support the 'It's in Your Hands' campaign, where they can bring a blanket to donate at the event. 'With sponsorship from Sampra, new partnerships with BET, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, we're committed to supporting local artists and giving back to the community while showcasing our rich musical heritage,' said founder of Bassline Live, Brad Holmes. Cinema is alive and well: Nu Metro showcases the power of the big screen
It was lights, camera, big screens at Hyde Park Corner as Nu Metro Theatres showcased their new VIP luxury and 4DX experiences. This comes after the much-anticipated ScreenX, which is the first panoramic viewing experience in Africa. The experience uses multi-projection technology to deliver a 270° screen. Recent numbers, including those from Cinevation, have shown a rise in cinema attendance, with more than 2.1-million regular moviegoers monthly. More than 4.6-million South Africans visit cinemas up to six times a year, debunking the myth that the moviegoing habit is fading post-pandemic. The event's discussions centred on three core themes: ticket pricing, content diversity and support for South African films. Strategic partnerships with financial institutions such as Absa, Nedbank and Momentum were spotlighted, showcasing efforts to make cinema outings more accessible through subsidy programmes and loyalty club concessions. 'Cinema tickets for a family of four are now more affordable than they were in 2019,' said Menen Muthial, business analyst at Nu Metro, dispelling the belief that ticket prices are prohibitive.
