Senior IPS Officer Parag Jain, Who Played Key Role In Op Sindoor, To Head RAW: Source
Senior IPS officer Parag Jain, credited with key intelligence operations during Operation Sindoor, has been appointed as the new head of the country's external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), sources have told NDTV.
After a deadly attack on tourists in picturesque Pahalagam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, New Delhi launched strikes deep into Pakistan's territory as part of what it named Operation Sindoor. India blamed Pakistan for backing the attackers who killed 26 civilians. Islamabad denied it and called for an independent probe. A ceasefire was reached on May 10 after four days of fighting.
Mr Jain is currently the second senior-most officer in the RAW, after outgoing chief Ravi Sinha.
He will serve a two-year tenure after taking over from Mr Sinha, who retires on June 30, the officials said.
Mr Jain currently heads RAW's Aviation Research Centre (ARC), which deals with aerial surveillance, among others.
A 1989-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Punjab cadre, brings over two decades of experience within RAW to his new role.
His career includes significant operational contributions during the height of terrorism in Punjab, where he served as SSP and Deputy Inspector General of Police in various districts.
Within RAW, the senior IPS officer has extensively handled the Pakistan desk, with tenures in Jammu and Kashmir during the abrogation of Article 370, say sources.
The officer has also served in Indian Missions in Sri Lanka and Canada. During his tenure in Canada, he monitored Khalistani terror modules operating from there, the sources further added.

Article 370 was against Ambedkar's ideology of one Constitution: CJI BR Gavai
Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Saturday said that BR Ambedkar envisioned one Constitution to keep the country united and never favoured the idea of a separate Constitution for any state, PTI reported. Justice Gavai said that the Supreme Court drew inspiration from Ambedkar's vision of a united India when it upheld the Centre's decision to abrogate Article 370, which had granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre had abrogated Article 370 in August 2019. It also bifurcated the state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. In December 2023, the Supreme Court, with Justice Gavai as a member of the five-judge Constitution bench, upheld the validity of the 2019 order abrogating Article 370 and ordered the Centre to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. 'When the hearing was underway, I recalled Dr Babasaheb's words that one Constitution is suited for a country,' Justice Gavai said while addressing a gathering at the inauguration of the Constitution Preamble Park in New Delhi. 'If we want to keep the country united, we need only one Constitution.' The Chief Justice of India added that Ambedkar had faced criticism, with some people saying that the Constitution's strong federalism might compromise national unity, especially during wartime. Ambedkar had then responded to his critics that the Constitution would suit all the challenges and keep the nation united, PTI quoted Justice Gavai as saying. 'See the situation in the neighbouring countries, be it Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka,' he added. 'Whenever our country faces challenges, it has remained united.'

China's expanding strategic presence in Indian Ocean Region is a challenge for India: Parliament Committee Report
The growing presence of extra-regional players in the India Ocean Region (IOR), especially China gaining a foothold in the region, is one of the strategic challenges for India, reads the report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs. The report, released earlier this week, further reads that China has been undertaking several infrastructure projects focusing on ports, airports and the logistics sector for dual-use purposes, in addition to deploying research and survey vessels in the region to augment maritime domain awareness, and collect sensitive oceanography and marine data. Explained | China's moves in the Indian Ocean On the extent of inroads made by China in the IOR, how aggressive China is, and how secure India's position is, the report reads that China has expanded its naval power in the region by increasing the number of vessels and duration of deployment. This has been facilitated by establishing a military base in Djibouti in 2017 and the creation of dual-use infrastructure astride critical maritime choke points in the IOR to serve logistics support functions. The report further reads that as part of this strategy, China is also developing ports and other infrastructure facilities in the littoral countries of the IOR, including in the vicinity of India's maritime boundary, and has a stated goal of becoming a maritime power. India has been working closely with partner countries in the region and sensitising them on China's activities and the long-term implications for their internal and regional security. In December 2024, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake reiterated his country's stated position of not permitting its territory to be used in any manner inimical to the security of India, as well as towards regional stability. While the Indian government is aware of China's engagements with other countries, including Sri Lanka, India's relations with these countries stand on their own footing and are independent of the relations of these countries with third countries, the report reads. Their concerns arise inter alia from the inclusion of the so-called illegal China-Pakistan Economic Corridor as a flagship project of BRI, which impinges on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India. The so-called illegal 'China-Pakistan Economic Corridor' passes through parts of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, which are under the illegal occupation of Pakistan. The government has conveyed its concerns to the Chinese side on multiple occasions and has asked them to cease such activities. 'We have been clear that militarisation of the Indian Ocean Region is not desirable and it will adversely impact security of the Indian Ocean and the wider Indo-Pacific,' the report mentioned regarding potential military use of ports and infrastructures by China developed in IOR.

The students were terrified, traumatised, and in extremely vulnerable positions. Their families were in deep distress, pleading for help and the safe return of their wards. These students, trapped in cities like Tehran, Shiraz, Isfahan, Qom, Gilan, Tabriz, Yazd, and Ahvaz, endured severe psychological distress amid active conflict zones.
