From Labubus to Disney's Stitch: How UAE cafes create pop culture-inspired merch

From Labubu matcha to Stitch schoolbags, businesses across the UAE are capitalising on popular culture to boost their sales, with today's market often rewarding the fastest to ride trends.
MEET Café, a coffee shop situated in Muwaileh, Sharjah, started selling Labubu-style matcha drinks around two weeks ago, and already saw a spike in sales of around 20 to 30 per cent, the founder of the café told Khaleej Times.
The Labubu is a trendy plush toy that took the UAE by storm, with some customers lining up for hours to get their hands on them.
Ahmed Al Harmoodi, founder of MEET Café, said that the drink became an instant hit, and the coffee shop started seeing more customers by the day. 'The Labubu drink helped attract a large number of new customers, in addition to increasing visits from existing customers who wanted to try the new product,' he said.
The café even introduced a loyalty card that, once fully stamped, can get you a free Labubu toy. 'We believe that trend-based promotions can create temporary buzz, but they also present an opportunity to build long-term customer loyalty by offering a high-quality product and a distinctive experience,' Al Harmoodi said.
Unexpected bestseller
Maryam Hamad, an artist who sells merchandise with her own hand-drawn designs, didn't expect the Disney character Stitch from Lilo & Stitch to be her bestselling item. It all started with a request from one of her customers to create a Stitch-inspired hoodie, and after posting an image of the final product to her Instagram account, orders for other Stitch-inspired merchandise started to pour in.
She said even the schoolbags that she usually sells, which have a drawing of a generic boy and girl character, didn't get many orders before her daughter asked for the Disney character to be drawn alongside the original design.
Maryam then uploaded a picture of the final product and said that more and more orders started to pour through for the Stitch schoolbags.
However, the work and effort put in takes up much of her time, so she sometimes has to opt out of some trends. 'It sometimes takes an entire day to paint, especially Stitch, because the drawing needs to be perfected,' she said.
Maryam added that this is why she decided not to upload any 'Labubu' doll products as she knew the demand would be high. 'I already got requests from people to draw the Labubu on different items, especially on wallets for Eid. But because of the pressure, I didn't want to add pictures of it on my Instagram,' she said.
Internet sensations
Even influencer breakups are not spared from some businesses' marketing efforts. The Lebanese restaurant Allo Beirut uploaded a TikTok post joining in on the 'Thewizardliz' bandwagon. Lize Dzjabrailova, also known as Thewizardliz, recently was in the internet's spotlight after she accused her husband Landon Nickerson of extramarital affairs. Allo Beirut uploaded a TikTok post with the caption 'Landon is NOT allowed to come to Allo Beirut', teasingly referring to the breakup and siding with Lize.
This became their most-liked video as of yet on the platform, but whether it gained them more profit is unknown. What is clear, though, is that businesses stand to gain more than just profit when they capitalise on pop culture and trends. 'Trend-based promotions can also create an opportunity [for businesses] to build long-term customer loyalty,' Al Harmoodi said.

As temperatures soar here in the UAE, and on the occasion of International Ice Cream Day (which is July 20 annually), we have rounded up The National newsroom's favourite scoops. Salted saffron with luqaimat at Mina Creamery Mina Creamery specialises in a constantly revolving menu of seasonal and local flavours including halwa, gahwa, aseeda falooda and karak chai. The business came to life as part of an incubator within MiZa, Abu Dhabi, before becoming an online store. But it will soon return to MiZa with a brick-and-mortar shop opening at the end of August. The best flavour? It might be the salted saffron with luqaimat. While we wait for the MiZa shop to open, you can order online on a Wednesday for Thursday pickup or delivery, 500ml pots cost Dh50. Laura Koot, managing editor Mango softie at Salt The only thing that makes the long summers bearable for me is the promise of sweet and juicy mangoes, especially the ones that come from India and Pakistan, and all of the desserts that are made with mango during this season. One of my favourites is the mango softie from Salt (Dh35) – a light and refreshing no-frills dessert – which essentially feels like slurping on frozen mango pulp. It's served at various Salt locations in the UAE (including Umm Al Emarat Park in Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah's Marjan Island and Kite Beach in Dubai). I love that it is not too sweet and tastes just like eating an iced mango. Served swirled up in a cup and topped with fresh mango pieces, this dessert may be simple, but it really hits the spot. Aarti Jhurani, features sub-editor Terry's Orange at Scoopi Cafe Scoopi Cafe is known for making very fresh ice cream using liquid nitrogen. There is a time, a good few years ago, when I documented myself trying its jet-black activated charcoal ice cream, topped with edible 23K gold leaf (all in the name of work). Left with black teeth and unsure what gold tastes like, that wasn't my favourite, despite its surprisingly fresh citric taste. However, at the Time Out Market Dubai venue, I have been known to indulge in a few scoops of the brand's made-to-order sweet treats. My order depends on my mood, but it's always in a waffle cup and at the moment the Terry's Chocolate Orange-inspired flavour (Dh45), creamy and indulgent with a summery dash of orange, is my go-to. A few years ago, Scoopi made a name for itself serving Dubai's most expensive ice cream at Dh2,999. The Black Diamond ice cream was a sundae made with vanilla bean ice cream from Madagascar, saffron from Iran, rare black truffles from Italy and edible gold. That no longer seems to be on the menu, but the charcoal and gold scoop is, at Dh100 a pop. Farah Andrews, head of features Yoghurt honeycomb and sea salt (and more) at Hapi Not to be hyperbolic about it, but this is the best ice cream anywhere in the world, not just the UAE. You can enjoy it at Hapi's spot in Al Khazan Park in Dubai or you can order it on Deliveroo. If I'm going to a dinner party, I always bring three tubs with me – choco orange almond, mango sorbet, and yoghurt honeycomb and sea salt (Dh32 for 480ml). I love watching people react to trying it for the first time, because they all make the same face. Like they've just seen the light. The raspberry cheesecake flavour is great too. It's all great. Try them for yourself and you can thank me later. Added bonus: the artisanal ice cream is made in small batches with all-natural ingredients, and no artificial additives, preservatives or stabilisers. Nasri Atallah, editor of The National's Luxury magazine Avocado gelato at Located in Abu Dhabi's Zayed Port, scoops up the most delicious avocado gelato (from Dh21). Not only does it rhyme, but this perfectly creamy confection is the ultimate dessert for a savoury-leaning palate. I guess the consistent queue at the counter is all the evidence required to confirm the other flavours have fans, too. Laura Koot, managing editor Horlicks soft serve at Creme I discovered the soft serve at Creme after an epic dinner nearby. I was after something sweet but relatively light, and the guy behind the counter at the cult cookie spot from Soho, London didn't hesitate. 'Try the soft serve,' he said. It was smooth, creamy and deeply nostalgic. The flavour took me straight back to my teenage cereal addiction: Corn Flakes, Honey Smacks and Weetabix. When I asked what I was tasting, he just smiled and told me it's Horlicks. Horlicks, for the uninitiated, is a classic malted milk drink, somewhere between a health tonic and a comfort ritual. That's exactly what this soft serve tastes like. You can get it topped with cookie crumble, but I'd recommend having it plain to be swept up in those nostalgic flavours. Servings start at Dh32. Saeed Saeed, features writer Crema dal 1947 at La Romana dal 1947 One of the original flavours at this Italian gelato chain – and definitely my all-time favourite – the crema dal 1947 is available at La Romana outlets at The Galleria Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi, plus Dubai Hills Mall and Bluewaters. It includes traditional Italian custard cream enhanced by vanilla extract and natural lemon zest. However, when it comes to ice cream, I like to go over the top, so my version comes with a classic batter crepe with Nutella and berries (from Dh41). Zoya Thomas, digital platforms editor Founder's Favourite at Cold Stone Creamery I first tasted Cold Stone Creamery when it arrived in the UAE in 2007, a year after I moved here, and it's been one sweet relationship ever since. Founded in Arizona, US, by Susan and Donald Sutherland (no relation to the Hollywood actor), the brand's appeal is customisability, allowing you to mix ice-cream flavours as well as other toppings, from gummies and graham crackers to brownies and chocolate bars. Whenever I am struggling to decide which mix I want, my go-to is Founder's Favourite (from Dh24). As the name suggests, it's a favourite of the brand's founders, and comprises sweet cream ice cream, mixed with pecans, brownie, fudge and drizzled with caramel sauce. I usually add Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and chocolate chip cookie dough to mine for the ultimate treat. Available at locations across the UAE. David Tusing, assistant features editor Love Potion #31 at Baskin-Robbins Baskin-Robbins has its American headquarters in my home state of Massachusetts, but I rarely ordered it back when I was in the US. It wasn't until one day when I tried the Love Potion #31 flavour in Abu Dhabi that it became my go-to ice cream. Luckily for me, it is available year-round in the UAE versus being just a seasonal option in the US, where it is usually found around Valentine's Day. Love Potion #31 is rich and indulgent, made with white chocolate and raspberry ice creams swirled together, with a ripple of raspberry and generous chunks of chocolate-flavoured hearts filled with raspberry. It may sound like a lot – creamy, fruity and chocolatey all in one bite – but it's mostly sweet with a bit of tartness for balance. An added bonus is that the single kids' scoop cup starts at Dh11, making it great value. Available at locations across the UAE. Evelyn Lau, assistant features editor Ashta with pistachios at Bachir While adding crunchy pistachios to Bachir's wonderful Ashta (clotted cream) ice cream is optional, the nostalgic flavour of rosewater is guaranteed to hit your senses from the first bite. A Lebanese brand, which launched in 1936, Bachir brought its well-loved flavours to the UAE in 2022. I was with my Lebanese friends, who insisted I try its signature Ashta, with pistachios and a dollop of whipped cream on top. Trying it transported me to my grandma's garden in Jordan, eating ice cream with her in the summer heat. Hala Nasar, social media journalist Lazy cake at Mama Booza A rich mix of premium dark chocolate with chunks of lazy cake (sharing pots cost Dh69), this ice-cream flavour from Mama Booza elevates a childhood dessert and turns it into something even better. Every bite takes me back to my family home, when I would reach for my mom's lazy cake rolls after every meal. It's a balanced treat that isn't too sweet, but still hits the spot when I'm craving something indulgent. The chunks of lazy cake are a flavour bomb – fudgy, chocolatey and super-satisfying. Meet UAE kids who recite call to prayer in mosques during summer break

While summer holidays are typically associated with fun and leisure, several Emirati children have chosen to dedicate part of their break to learning and performing the adhan (call to prayer) in mosques across the country, reflecting a deep-seated passion and spiritual connection. Khaleej Times spoke to a group of children who raised the adhan (call to prayer) as part of the 'Mu'adhin Al-Farij' programme. The name 'Mu'adhin Al-Farij' literally means "the neighbourhood's caller to prayer of the neighbourhood". It aims to instil Islamic values in the next generation and foster children's connection to mosques. Among the standout participants is nine-year-old Rashid Khalid Alketbi, a student at King's School in Dubai, whose love for the adhan started early. At just eight years old, he approached the imam at his local mosque and asked if he could perform the adhan himself. The imam agreed, and from that day, reciting the adhan became part of Rashid's daily routine. Passion for adhan "When I heard the imam making the adhan, I asked my mother if I could try. She agreed, and then I went to the imam and asked him. He let me call the Asr adhan, and I felt a sense of calm (like never before)," Alketbi said. Rashid's passion only grew. With his soothing voice and a deep sense of dedication, he eventually joined the Mu'adhin Al-Farij programme. He also had the honour of performing the adhan in front of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum at Nad Al Sheba Palace. A gifted poet as well, Rashid won first place in a Dubai-wide poetry contest among 1,000 students. His mother, who actively supports his pursuits — from Quran to public speaking to sports — says his enthusiasm for the adhan comes entirely from within. He now trains at Hattrick Football Academy, where Emirati children can bond together in a culturally rooted environment. He hopes to become an official mu'adhin in the mosques of the Emirates one day. He also encourages other children to try it too, saying it brings tranquility and great spiritual reward. Following in his father's footsteps Another young mu'adhin shared his story of how he got started. Inspired by his religious father, Nahyan Abdulla Alfalasi gave his first adhan at home when he was around eight or nine years old. Speaking to Khaleej Times, the 10-year-old said, "The first time I gave the adhan was at home. I used to listen to different mu'adhins and learn from them." He began imitating various mu'adhins and eventually developed his own style, influenced by his favourite reciter, Hamad Al Daghrir, who performs the adhan Makkah's Grand Mosque. "I love his voice. I try to imitate him, but I use my style too," he said. When asked if he feels nervous before making the adhan, he said, "My parents raised me well and instilled confidence in me. What I love most is that my voice is soft and the adhan is accurate." Alfalasi, a student at the Scientific Research School in Dubai, regularly visits a mosque in Al Khawaneej, where his father prays and where he takes Quran and adhan lessons, "I used to go two or three times a week to learn," he said. One of his proudest moments came when he performed the adhan at Zabeel Palace in front of the Dubai Ruler and Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan. "I met Sheikh Mohammed first, then Sheikh Hamdan. After I finished the adhan, Sheikh Mohammed told me: 'Your adhan is number one'." He recalled a lighthearted moment during a trip to City Walk with his friends, where they asked him to call the adhan in one of the mosques there. "It was a beautiful feeling," he said. Nahyan has memorised three parts of the Quran and spends his summer balancing Quranic studies with swimming and football. His advice to other kids? "Learn the adhan now, so that one day you can become mu'adhins like me." His mother encouraged him to participate in the programme so that her children would grow up with a strong religious and cultural foundation. "The programme is amazing. It builds character and instils values," she said. She also enrolled her younger son, Tahnoon, who is nine years old. "The goal isn't to win — it's for children to learn, call the adhan at the mosque, and lead prayer in the future," she added. 'Moment of joy' Although the programme is based in Dubai, that didn't stop cousins Tamim and Hassan, from Khor Fakkan, from joining. Tamim Mahmoud Ali, 12, and Hassan Humaid Aldarmaki, 11, joined the programme despite the long travel to Dubai. They trained under Sheikh Younis, the imam of Al Warqaa Mosque. Their commitment paid off — they were selected for advanced training at Al Maktoum Centre due to their talent and dedication. They also performed the adhan at various mosques in Dubai and Khor Fakkan. Tamim, who once battled nerves, said calling the adhan at Umm Al Sheif majlis was a turning point: 'All my nervousness disappeared in that moment of joy.' Hassan, once a quiet imitator of other mu'adhins, now calls the adhan with confidence. He has memorised nine juz' of the Quran, while Tamim has memorised eleven. Both boys also attend classes in Islamic jurisprudence and Hadith and take part in sports, especially football. When asked about their feelings while making the adhan, both described a sense of awe and a deep spiritual connection. They hope to become official mu'adhins in the future and encourage other children to try it for themselves, calling it a spiritually uplifting experience.
