How Himachal's ‘1 Bride, 2 Grooms' Tradition Works: Wife Decides — Same Room Or ‘Shoe Sign' At Door
In parts of Himachal Pradesh, there exists a tradition that has its roots in the Mahabharata. If you couldn't guess it, we are talking about Jodidara, aka an ancient custom of polyandry where a woman willfully gets married to two men. Recently, two brothers from Shillai village of Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh, got married to the same woman in accordance with rituals followed by the Hatti tribe. The incident has now grabbed the spotlight, with debates emerging around the concept of polyandrous weddings.
On July 12, the bride, Sunita Chauhan, married brothers Pradeep and Kapil Negi, as a joint decision without any external pressure. The three-day event, which wrapped up on July 14, was celebrated with several 'Jajda" customs. As per a report by The Times of India, a priest performed 'Seenj", chanted mantras, sprinkled holy water and offered jaggery to invoke blessings from the Kul Devta (family deity).
Return of Polyandry in Himachal?

How Jodidara Works
The practice of Jodidara is acknowledged in Himachal Pradesh's revenue laws. It is also linked to Sections 494 and 495 of the Indian Penal Code as a part of marital relationships.
According to a PhD thesis titled Polyandry in the Himalayas: Social-economic background of Himalayan Polyandry, published by former chief minister YS Parmer, the wife has complete autonomy in deciding how time is distributed among her husbands.
YS Parmer further explained that sometimes a shoe or a cap is placed outside the room to indicate that the wife is with one particular husband. 'In most cases, the wife sleeps with all her husbands in the same room… she decides, according to her own wish, which husband to be with that night. However, she performs her duties with each brother in turn. Typically, equal time is given to all husbands. Complaints rarely arise," wrote Parmer, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Bihar voters will show mirror to Rahul Gandhi: Giriraj
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) Bihar voters will show mirror to 'poster boy of Pakikstan' Rahul Gandhi in the coming elections for spreading lies about the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, Union Minister Giriraj Singh said on Tuesday. 'The SIR is taking place as part of an electoral process yet Rahul Gandhi and Tejaswi Yadav jhooth ki kheti karte hain (they cultivate lies)," he told reporters on the sidelines of inauguration of an event organised by the Ministry of Textiles, in collaboration with the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC). The minister said if RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav possesses two voter cards, he should die of shame (usse toh chullu bhar paani mein doob ke mar jana chahiye). Singh also lashed out on Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi saying he believes in US President Donald Trump and likes what Pakistan says, but does not agree with the Supreme Court. He referred to recent observations by the Supreme Court against Rahul Gandhi in relation to his remarks on Indian army. 'He (Gandhi) has become the poster boy of Pakistan. He is going to Bihar from the 9th to the 14th. The people of Bihar will show them a mirror in the elections," said Singh, who is MP from Begusarai Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar. Referring to the over 35 lakh weavers associated with handlooms, the minister said in the near future their designs will be linked to blockchain technology so that the designs do not get stolen by any foreign company again. 'I don't want to take any names, foreign companies are stealing our designs and projecting as their own. India does not need anyone else's design," Singh told reporters. Don't give China pass, burn relationship with strong ally India: Nikki Haley
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New York, Aug 5 (PTI) The US should not burn its relationship with a 'strong ally like India" and give a pass to China, Indian-American Republican leader Nikki Haley said on Tuesday, amid President Donald Trump's attacks against New Delhi over tariffs and purchases of Russian oil. 'India should not be buying oil from Russia. But China, an adversary and the number one buyer of Russian and Iranian oil, got a 90-day tariff pause," Haley said in a post on X. 'Don't give China a pass and burn a relationship with a strong ally like India," she said. Haley, the former Governor of South Carolina, was the US Ambassador to the United Nations under Trump's first presidential term, becoming the first Indian-American to be appointed to a cabinet-level post in the US administration. In 2013, she officially announced her candidacy for the 2024 presidential election and withdrew from the race in March last year. Her comments came hours after Trump said India has not been a 'good trading partner" and announced he will raise tariffs on India 'very substantially over the next 24 hours" because New Delhi is buying Russian oil and 'fueling" the 'war machine". India on Monday mounted an unusually sharp counterattack on the US and the European Union for their 'unjustified and unreasonable" targeting of New Delhi for its procurement of Russian crude oil. Meanwhile, Trump, in an interview with CNBC responded to a question on China and its leader, Xi Jinping, and said, 'We have a very good relationship". Trump added that he might have a meeting with the Chinese President 'before the end of the year, most likely, if we make a deal." He said he won't have a meeting if a deal doesn't materialise. 'But we're getting very close to a deal. We're getting along with China very well." Trump added that China is 'very reliant" on the US. 'My relationship with them is very good. I think we'll make a good deal. It's not imperative, but I think we're going to make a good deal." He added that he has had a 'great relationship" with President Xi. 'We respect him a lot. They respect us a lot." PTI YAS GRS GRS GRS GRS view comments First Published: August 05, 2025, 21:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
