Man Utd and Arsenal dealt Viktor Gyokeres blow as Sporting strike huge agreement
Sporting Lisbon are confident of completing a €55m (£47.2m) deal with Crystal Palace for their defender Ousmane Diomande in the coming days – ensuring the Portuguese side are under even less pressure to sell coveted striker Viktor Gyokeres for a cut price.
Arsenal and Manchester United have appeared at the front of the queue for Sweden star Gyokeres but Sporting have made it clear that they will not accept anything less than their £85m asking price for their top scorer.
The Gunners, who are also keen on RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, reportedly had a bid of about £60m rejected by Sporting last month with their president Federico Varandas furiously calling out Gyokeres' agent for trying to force a move for his client.
"Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me," Varandas said. Gyokeres joined Sporting two years ago and has a contract that runs until the summer of 2028.
Reports in Portugal, however, state that Sporting have accepted an offer well below Diomande's €80m clause with Palace - who are set to factor in a hefty sell-on clause.
The Ivorian is also earning around €500,000 (£429,000) a year at Sporting and will receive a hefty salary increase in south London.
On the flip side Diomande's arrival at Selhurst Park could pave the way for Palace captain and England star Marc Guehi to leave. Liverpool are confident of sealing a move for Guehi, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract and is not expected to sign an extension.
That leaves FA Cup winners Palace with the choice of selling him this summer to recoup a fee or let him leave on a free next summer. Palace had refused to sell Guehi, who turns 25 this month, to Newcastle United last month.
Liverpool have already paid out £150m to Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for £40m - with a number of exits funding most of their initial outlay and face no immediate concerns around profit and sustainability regulations.

Mourners to gather in Portugal for wake of Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota
The 28-year-old father of three, who had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso just 11 days ago, died in a car crash in Spain alongside his brother Andre Silva after a Lamborghini they were travelling in veered off the road and burst into flames following a suspected tyre blowout. The pair were found dead following the crash on the A-52 in Palacios de Sanabria near the city of Zamora at 12.40am on Thursday. Jose Manuel Macedo, parish priest at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in Sao Cosme, told the PA news agency in a translated message that a wake for the brothers will take place at 8am at the nearby Capela da Ressurreicao before their funeral at the Igreja Matriz on Saturday at 10am. Liverpool manager Arne Slot said the 'sense of shock is absolute' for the club. 'Diogo was not just our player,' he said. 'He was a loved one to all of us. Tributes have been left at Anfield Stadium in memory of Jota (Peter Byrne/PA) 'I could say so much about what he brought to our team but the truth is everyone who watched Diogo play could see it. Hard work, desire, commitment, great quality, goals. 'The essence of what a Liverpool player should be.' Slot said the player 'never sought popularity' but gained it anyway and was a friend to everyone, able to make others feel good about themselves 'just by being with them'. Portugal fans held up tributes to the player (Nick Potts/PA) He said the last time they spoke he wished Jota luck for his upcoming wedding. 'In many ways, it was a dream summer for Diogo and his family, which makes it all the more heartbreaking that it should end like this,' Slot added. He recalled learning, when he first came to the club, of the song Liverpool fans sang for Jota and said he knew 'straight away' that meant the player must have 'special qualities'. 'When the time is right, we will celebrate Diogo Jota, we will remember his goals and we will sing his song,' Slot said. 'For the time being, we will remember him as a unique human being and mourn his loss. He will never be forgotten.' The club has opened physical and digital books of condolence in the wake of the deaths, and supporters and members of the public can go to the Anfield Road Stand reception area over the coming days to sign a message. The online book can be found at Flags have been lowered to half-mast at the stadium and all club stores, museums and tours have been closed until Monday, with staff offered wellbeing support. The Portuguese Football Federation also said it was 'devastated' to learn of the deaths, adding: 'Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football.' Police said they were investigating the possibility that the Lamborghini left the road because of a tyre blowout while overtaking, and a source from the government sub-delegation in Zamora confirmed 'a possible speeding incident' was being looked at. No other vehicles are said to have been involved in the incident. Pictures of the aftermath of the crash showed debris scattered along the side of the road including what appeared to be charred parts of the vehicle. Liverpool fans started leaving tributes outside Anfield on Thursday morning, with flowers being laid with messages including 'Thanks for everything, Diogo'. Tributes outside Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton (Matthew Cooper/PA) Jota was part of Liverpool's Premier League-winning side in the 2024/25 campaign, scoring six goals in 26 appearances. He joined the Merseyside club from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, winning three major trophies. Portugal national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo said he wishes Jota's family 'all the strength in the world' following the Liverpool forward's death. A translated version of his message on Instagram said: 'Doesn't make any sense. 'Just now we were together in the national team, just now you were married. 'To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. 'I know you will always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.' The Prince of Wales, patron of the FA, said he was 'deeply saddened' to hear of Jota's death, adding: 'Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him.' On Wednesday, Jota and Cardoso, 28, posted video footage of their wedding, with the caption: 'A day we will never forget.'

I battled Odsonne Edouard when I played against Celtic and now I'm about to square up to Hoops in the dugout
The Queen's Park boss reckons his players facing the Hoops in Friday's friendly will prepare them for the energy-sapping Championship Sean Crighton had the unenviable task of marking Odsonne Edouard and his Celtic pals during Brendan Rodgers' first stint in Glasgow. Now the Queen's Park boss reckons his players facing the Hoops in Friday's friendly will prepare them for the energy-sapping Championship. Former stopper Crighton, 35, faced Celtic with Brechin and Airdrie and will do battle with them again this evening when he invites Rodgers and co to Lesser Hampden. He said: 'We need to know where the players are at. 'You're playing a dominant team in terms of having the ball, so it'll show us where we're at fitness-wise as well. It's going to be a really good test. 'I want the players to be prepared for what's coming and what's real. 'We've got all the data we can look at as well and go, 'Look how much we ran against Celtic and how much we ran against an opposition in the Championship or League Cup'. 'As a player, you thrive – it's an automatic thing. You would love to say to players you should be like that all the time but unfortunately they're not. 'When you come up against a Celtic or a bigger opposition, you want to give it your all. They've got a young squad as well, they might catch the eye. 'For me, that means their concentration is better and they've got that wee bit of smartness about them. 'I really enjoyed playing against Celtic. I was playing the first time against Edouard when he was a young boy coming from Paris St-Germain, then you play against Oli Burke. 'It's a tough test but it's good for the players to experience that as well because I know Celtic will be strong, which we're looking forward to.' Queen's have long been linked with a tie-up with Celtic. Asked if tonight could help that process, Crighton added: 'It can certainly help. "It's been rumoured for a few months that we've been in talks with Celtic. Until it's all finalised, we just don't know.' Mikel Arteta makes bold demand to Arsenal chiefs over Viktor Gyokeres transfer
Arsenal are keen to get a deal over the line for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres before the end of the window with Mikel Arteta having shared his thoughts on a deal Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has set a deadline of less than TWO WEEKS for Arsenal to seal a deal for Viktor Gyokeres or an alternative. The Gunners are desperate to add a striker to their squad this summer as they attempt to cut the gap to Arsenal at the top of the table. A number of candidates have emerged including RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Aston Villa 's Ollie Watkins. But the outstanding candidate appears to be Sporting Lisbon hitman Viktor Gyokeres. Reports have suggested that Arsenal are closing in on a deal for the Swedish striker after agreeing personal terms. Negotiations continue with Sporting, who reportedly want to bank around £69million (€80m) for their star man. While work continues on a deal, it appears that Arteta is very keen for a deal to be done as soon as possible. According to Mail Online, the Arsenal boss wants a move for a forward to be completed before Arsenal fly out to Singapore for a pre-season tour of Asia on July 19. It is suggested that the vast majority of negotiations will have to be concluded in the week commencing July 14, leaving Arsenal with only a limited amount of time to thrash out the terms of a move. Sporting president Federico Varandas has recently spoken out on Gyokeres' future and name-checked the Gunners when discussing how much his side would be willing to sell the striker for. He said: "Sporting is calm regarding this matter. "Secondly, Sporting does not need to sell Viktor Gyökeres. Fortunately, we have moved past the phase of selling our main asset. "However, we remain sensitive to Viktor's dreams or those of any other athlete. Sporting has made a commitment that, after weeks of meetings, we will not demand the full amount of the clause; we will be reasonable regarding the amount requested for Viktor. Would Viktor Gyokeres be a good signing for Arsenal? Share your thoughts in the comments below "Today, there is a strong likelihood that he will leave. I won't disclose the amount, but the player knows what it is. I can say that Viktor will not leave for 60+10m. He won't leave, absolutely not. "In recent weeks, we have been paying attention. I saw a player, Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, go for 65 million, and I saw Matheus Cunha move to Manchester United for around 75 million euros. 'We are talking about players who are 26 years old. I believe Viktor could leave, unless he has the worst agent in the world, which I don't believe, as his agent is one of the best in the world." Gyokeres is not the only signing that Arsenal could conclude over the coming weeks. Martin Zubimendi is on the verge of becoming a Gunner, while Valencia star Cristhian Mosquera has turned down a new contract with the La Liga side to push through a move.
