Pahalgam attack remarks: Allahabad HC grants anticipatory bail to LU asst prof

Hindustan Times09-06-2025
The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on Monday granted an interim anticipatory bail to Lucknow University's assistant professor Madri Kakoti who was booked on April 28 this year on charges of sedition and causing disharmony through her controversial social media post related to the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack.
Justice Rajeev Singh passed the order. An FIR was lodged against Kakoti on the application of Jatin Shukla, a student and member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). In the FIR, she was accused of targeting the integrity and sovereignty of India through her posts on X.
She was booked for multiple offences under relevant Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections, including charges related to endangering India's sovereignty, unity and integrity.
Advocate Syed Mohammad Haider Rizvi represented Kakoti in the court. It was contended in the FIR that Kakoti's posts contained objectionable and provocative terms such as saffron-terrorist and were circulated by Pakistani media houses.

Pakistan, Bangladesh agree on visa-free travel, security concerns for India

India has expressed concern over the move as it could increase the movement of ISI officers, threatening national security along the eastern and northeastern borders read more A day after Pakistan and Bangladesh approved visa-free entry for officials for unrestricted movement of diplomats between the two countries, putting India on high alert. The decision was announced after Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Bangladesh's Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury held a high-level meeting in Dhaka. 'A significant breakthrough was achieved on the facilitation of visa-free entry for holders of diplomatic and official passports, and both countries reached a principled agreement on this matter,' Islamabad said in a statement. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, no date has been mentioned as to when the visa-free entry for diplomats will be implemented. According to a report by the Economic Times, India has expressed concern over the move as it could increase the movement of ISI officers, threatening national security along the eastern and northeastern borders. Sources have told the news outlet that a bigger presence of Pakistani officials in Bangladesh would give more substance to anti-India Islamist groups, leading to greater security risks for the country. Officials from Pakistan and Bangladesh also held talks on key issues, including counterterrorism, internal security, police training, drug control, and measures to combat human trafficking. A joint committee will be established to oversee and coordinate the implementation of new initiatives. Both countries agreed to start exchange programs for police academies. A delegation from Bangladesh is expected to visit Pakistan's National Police Academy in Islamabad soon. Pakistan has formed a joint committee, to be headed by Interior Secretary Khurram Agha, to further boost cooperation with Bangladesh. A high-level Bangladeshi delegation will soon visit Islamabad to tour the Safe City Project and the National Police Academy. 'Your visit is of great significance for strengthening bilateral relations between our two countries,' Chowdhury said as he conferred a guard of honour to Naqvi. Pakistan-Bangladesh relations, which remained lukewarm during Sheikh Hasina's tenure, have seen a significant upswing since the interim government took power in Dhaka, marked by increased military-to-military engagements and a sharp rise in bilateral trade. India's Actions Were Measured, Non-Escalatory: Centre On Op Sindoor

New Delhi: Operation Sindoor was launched in response to a "barbaric" attack by "Pakistan-sponsored terrorists", and the action focussed on dismantling terror infrastructure and neutralising terrorists likely to be sent across to India, the government said on Thursday. In a written response to a query in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh also said India's actions were "focussed, measured and non-escalatory". The Ministry of External Affairs was asked whether it is a fact that Operation Sindoor was "announced under international pressure", and the "factual position" in this regard. Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman also asked about the impact of "sudden announcement of ceasefire in Operation Sindoor" on the morale of the Indian forces which were "achieving significant success", but suddenly "declaring ceasefire was against their morale and the sentiments of the people of the country". Union Minister said Operation Sindoor was launched to respond to a "barbaric cross-border terror attack by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. It focussed on dismantling terrorist infrastructure and neutralising terrorists likely to be sent across to India". Pakistan, however, attempted targeting Indian civilian areas, in addition to some military facilities, he said. "These provocations and escalatory actions by Pakistan were met with a strong and decisive response from the Indian armed forces, inflicting significant damage on the Pakistani military. Subsequently, on 10 May 2025, the Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan approached his Indian counterpart to request cessation of firing and military activities, which was agreed to later that day," the MoS said. Under Operation Sindoor, India had decimated nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on May 7 in pre-dawn precision strikes. It was carried out to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike. In a separate query, the MEA was also asked whether the ministry had taken efforts to "alienate" Pakistan in the world forum. As part of the UN Security Council's routine annual process, the Chairs and Vice-Chairs of its subsidiary bodies and committees are selected from amongst its permanent and elected non-permanent members. In addition to Russia and France, Pakistan has been selected as one of the Vice-Chairs of the UN Counter Terrorism Committee for 2025, Singh said. It may be noted that India was the Chair of the UN Counter Terrorism Committee in 2022. Similarly, India was also the Chair of the same committee during its 2011-12 term, the MoS added. "The Government of India has been sensitising all concerned interlocutors on the menace of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan. Due to India's persistent efforts, the global community has a greater understanding of India's concerns on cross-border terrorism," he said. India's efforts over the years have led to the listing of several Pakistan-based terrorists and terrorist entities under the UNSC 1267 Sanctions Committee and the FATF (Financial Action Task Force) "grey listing of Pakistan", the minister said. The UNSC press statement in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack also "strongly condemned" the terror attack and acknowledged the need to hold the perpetrators, organisers, sponsors and financiers of the attack accountable, he said. Several world leaders have recognised and supported India's actions to combat terrorism following the Pahalgam attack. Most recently, the US has designated The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, he said. In a separate query, the MEA was asked whether the government has "formally raised concerns" with the US regarding continued military aid and arms supplies to Pakistan, which could be "misused against India"; and whether India has taken "diplomatic steps" to counter "growing China–Pakistan military cooperation, particularly in PoK". Mr Singh, in his written response, said the government of India "closely monitors" all military and security-related developments in its neighbourhood and regularly takes up "our concerns in this regard in interactions with our partners at appropriate levels". "India has consistently conveyed its concerns in this regard to the United States, with a view to ensuring that these developments do not compromise India's security or regional stability," he said. It has been India's consistent and principled position that the entire Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh "are, have been, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India". The government closely monitors all developments that have a bearing on India's national interest and takes timely and necessary steps to safeguard its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security interests, the MoS said. "Counter-terrorism remains a vital pillar of the India-US comprehensive global strategic partnership. India and the United States maintain a robust institutional framework for cooperation, including a dedicated Counter-Terrorism Dialogue mechanism that meets regularly. "Both sides collaborate closely on terrorist designations at domestic and international forums, and extend mutual legal assistance, including on extradition matters," he added.

Local Boy With Terror Link? Neighbours Can't Believe It

New Delhi: In a maze of narrow lanes overlooking a crowded market in central Delhi's Farash Khana stands the home of 25-year-old Mohammed Faiq, arrested by Gujarat ATS for his alleged links with al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Faiq, a delivery boy for a local fast food outlet, worked in the neighbourhood market, which sells momos and other eatables. For the past 15 years, he lived with his family in the area, in an old building with exposed bricks and chipping paint. Locals described him as someone who would always keep to himself and focus on his job. On Thursday, the neighbourhood was abuzz with chatter about the anti-terror operation. Mohammed Shamim, a 55-year-old neighbour of Faiq and a shopkeeper at a local book-binding shop, remembered seeing him through the years. "His family has been living here for years. He was quiet but humble. We can't believe he had links with terrorists," Shamim said. Though shocked by his alleged terror links, many in the neighbourhood also said Faiq was polite, but would not interact much beyond casual greetings. Imran, a 35-year-old neighbour residing in the same lane, remembered rarely ever seeing the youth around. "He would almost always be at work." Nasir, the shopkeeper at a local hardware shop, added, "He would stay at home for very little. He was an introverted person who would usually only be seen commuting to and from his job. " Adjacent to the food outlet where Faiq worked stands a medical store that he used to visit frequently. Mohammed Fukran, the shopkeeper at the medical store and also a resident of the locality, shared memories of recent interactions with him. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "He was someone who would mind his business and seemed to have a good nature. I met him while praying on Sunday and we had a friendly conversation," said Fukran, unsettled by the news of the arrest. According to the Gujarat ATS, Faiq was allegedly in contact with multiple Pakistani Instagram accounts that would supply him with jihadi material. Police claimed to have recovered radical literature and a video in which Faiq is purportedly seen waving a sword and chanting religious slogans. ATS also picked up three other youths from Noida and Gujarat, who have been identified as Fardeen, Sefullah Kureshi and Zeeshan Ali. The cops have claimed that they used social media and auto-delete apps to conceal their communications.
