'One should look for instruments with a low
expense ratio
and a low
tracking error
before investing in the instrument. Often a lower tracking error comes with larger AUM as well,' Vishal Dhawan, CEO, Plan Ahead Wealth Advisors, a wealth management firm in Mumbai suggested.

Apart from expense ratio, Siddharth Srivastava, Head -
ETF
Product and Fund Manager at Mirae Asset Investment Managers (India) shares two different factors that one need to check to choose a
gold
ETF
Srivastava while mentioning the first critical factor as the total expense ratio (TER) adds that since all gold ETFs track gold of a standardised purity as mandated by regulation, the one with the lowest TER is generally preferable, as typically lower TER will result in higher returns. The other two factors he lists are liquidity and assets under management.
Live Events
'The second critical factor is liquidity on the exchange. Investors should ensure that the gold ETF they choose has adequate trading volumes and a reasonable order book. Always buy ETFs using limit price. Lastly, while assets under management (AUM) can be considered as a supplementary factor, the primary focus should remain on TER and exchange liquidity,' said Srivastava.
A deep dive into the expense ratio, tracking error, and assets under management of these 19 gold ETFs showed that Nippon India ETF Gold BeES, the largest fund has the highest expense ratio and even the tracking error is on the higher side whereas the funds with the low tracking error and expense ratio are the funds with small AUM.
Zerodha Gold ETF which manages an asset base of Rs 232 crore has the lowest expense ratio of 0.32%. The tracking error stands on the higher side. Union Gold ETF which had an AUM of Rs 136 crore as on March 202 had the lowest tracking error of 2.61.
After looking at the above data, Dhawan explains that based on AUM, if you look at tracking error in isolation, larger funds have a low tracking error compared to smaller AUM funds which reflects the efficiency that size brings in managing the fund and for expense ratio, funds with larger AUM often have a higher expense ratio.
Commenting on the interpretation part, Dhawan adds that the fund size is helping AMCs with lowering tracking error, but it's often coming with a higher expense ratio. 'On a combined level (Expense and Tracking error), higher AUM is not resulting in a lower overall expense ratio (Expense and Tracking error). We recommend investors look at both the expense and tracking error before investing in the instrument,' he added.

When the ETFs are traded on the exchange, an investor can check the last traded price, volume available for trade and the total value which indicates the liquidity of that ETF. With enough liquidity on the exchange and adequate trading volumes, the important thing to know is whether one should compromise on liquidity for a lower-cost ETF with less tracking error?
Srivastava mentions that liquidity refers to the ease and surety with which an ETF or any other security can be bought or sold on exchange at fair price with low impact cost and this becomes especially important in case of large orders. 'So while low cost (TER) and low tracking error is important, poor liquidity can spoil the investment experience and realized returns,' he adds.
While Dhawan sticks to how the instrument has performed over at least a year along with assessing the expense ratio and tracking error at the end of the year before investing.
The prices of gold in India soared to record levels this week and breached the Rs 1 lakh mark and with now trading at nearly Rs 98,760, the Head - ETF Product and Fund Manager at Mirae Asset Investment Managers (India) mentions that there are several factors supporting
gold prices
like geopolitical issues, concerns due U.S. tariffs, increasing chances of a U.S. recession, higher inflation and weakness in the US Dollar and most importantly continued buying by global central banks.
He adds that gold prices have already shown a strong one-way rally with one year return around 30% with several of the aforementioned factors being priced in. 'So while underlying supporting factors for gold continue, some correction may happen due to profit booking and investors may look to book some profit at these levels especially if they have over allocated.'
Dhawan attributes the recent rally as the reason for gold to trade in an overvaluation zone and advice to stick to the asset allocation in any asset class.

Gold vs Nifty: Which investment gave higher SIP return in one year?
An analysis by ETMutualFunds shows that Gold ETFs have significantly outperformed
Nifty
ETFs over the past year in terms of SIP returns. Out of SBI Mutual Fund's Gold ETF and Nifty 50 ETF, if an investor had made a monthly SIP of Rs 10,000 in the SBI Gold ETF, the XIRR over a one-year period would have been 54.35%. In contrast, the same investment in the SBI Nifty 50 ETF would have yielded an XIRR of just 2.93%.
Further analysis reveals that, including the SBI Gold ETF, 16 gold-based ETFs have delivered XIRRs ranging between 48.32% and 54.85% over the past year.
On the other hand, apart from the SBI Nifty 50 ETF, there are 15 ETFs benchmarked to the Nifty 50, which have offered XIRRs ranging between 2.87% and 3.03%.
So, if you are planning to allocate to a gold ETF, Srivastava recommends an investor should invest from a long term point of view for asset allocation purposes and investing at dips in a staggered manner may be preferred.
Experts generally recommend a small allocation in gold as a means of diversifying their portfolios and hedging against inflation.
Advising on the allocation one should have in their respective portfolios, Dhawan said that one can look to an allocation of 5% to 10% in commodities, and if it is not there yet, additional exposure should only be taken through a SIP strategy. 'As an alternative, one can look at a combined instrument like Gold and Silver as well through a SIP,' he added.
Gold ETFs are exchange-traded funds that track the price of physical gold. Each unit of a Gold ETF is backed by a specific quantity of gold, usually equivalent to one gram. They are listed on stock exchanges, and you need a demat and trading account to buy and sell them.

Rs 2,528 crore project: Cabinet approves 104-km freight corridor connecting Vadhavan Port with Mumbai-Nagpur E-way

The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday gave its approval for the construction of a 104.8-kilometre high-speed freight corridor connecting the upcoming Vadhavan Port in Palghar district with Bharvir in Nashik district, linking it to the Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway, officially named the Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg. The corridor, proposed as a strategic infrastructure link under the state's rapid logistics expansion plan, is expected to save nearly 79 km in travel distance and reduce commute time between the port and the expressway from 4–5 hours to just 1–1.5 hours. The project will be developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The Cabinet has approved a total outlay of Rs 2,528.90 crore, including a Rs 1,500 crore loan from HUDCO (Housing and Urban Development Corporation). The corridor is to be completed within three years. Currently, cargo from Vadhavan must travel via the Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway, covering around 183.48 km to reach the Samruddhi corridor via Bharvir–Amne. With the new expressway, the distance will be reduced to 104.898 km, saving 78.582 km, officials said. The proposed expressway will pass through Dahanu, Vikramgad, Jawhar and Mokhada in Palghar district, and Trimbakeshwar and Igatpuri in Nashik district, offering a direct, fast-moving logistics link between the state's western coast and central and eastern Maharashtra. The Vadhavan Transshipment Port, being developed under the Sagarmala initiative by Vadhavan Port Project Ltd, is expected to serve as a major international cargo hub. To complement this, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently constructing a 32-km highway from the port to Tawa on National Highway 48, which will integrate into the larger freight corridor. At present, heavy cargo vehicles must take a longer detour from Bharvir–Amne to reach the Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway, resulting in additional travel of nearly 82 km. The new corridor is expected to eliminate this inefficiency, enhancing fuel savings and turnaround times for goods transport. Officials said the corridor is being planned with future traffic volumes in mind. With anticipated high-volume freight movement from Vadhavan Port, particularly toward Vidarbha, Marathwada, and North Maharashtra, the expressway will play a vital role in decongesting existing routes and facilitating regional economic development. 'The expressway will benefit a wide range of stakeholders — from large and medium-scale industries to agricultural processing units, educational institutions, and IT parks in Palghar and Nashik. It will also help improve market access and generate local employment,' an MSRDC official said. The Cabinet meeting was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is overseeing major infrastructure and connectivity initiatives in the state. Officials noted that the new corridor will function as a key logistics backbone, enabling affordable, fast, and efficient cargo transport from India's western maritime gateway to its heartland.

5-year strategy to aid 1.25 lakh entrepreneurs: Startup policy gets Maharashtra Cabinet nod

The Maharashtra state cabinet on Tuesday approved a startup policy aimed at promoting innovation, self-employment and entrepreneurship across urban and rural regions. The Maharashtra Startup, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Policy 2025, cleared by the state Cabinet, outlines a five-year strategy to support 1.25 lakh entrepreneurs and recognise 50,000 startups, with provisions for a Rs 500-crore Maha-Fund, subsidised loans, incubation infrastructure, global startup exchange, and a new 300-acre Maharashtra Innovation City in Navi Mumbai. Under the policy, aspiring entrepreneurs will be eligible for loans between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh at a 3% subsidised interest rate, to be provided through a structured three-stage selection process. A total of five lakh youth, including graduates and ITI pass-outs, will be screened, of which 25,000 will be selected for financial and incubation support. The government will simultaneously set up micro-incubators in ITIs, polytechnics, and academic institutions, along with regional innovation and entrepreneurship hubs in each of the state's administrative divisions. A key infrastructure initiative is the development of the Maharashtra Innovation City (MIC), a 300-acre integrated facility planned near Navi Mumbai International Airport. Designed as a convergence zone for startups, R&D labs, corporates, academia and government, the city will host sector-focused clusters in AI, FinTech, Deeptech, Medtech, Biotech, Spacetech, smart infrastructure, mobility, sustainability, and cyber security. The facility will include AI sandboxes, data analytics labs, co-working spaces, a single-window policy facilitation centre, and venues for global startup exchanges, demo days and investor summits. Startups selected through the Maharashtra Startup Week will be eligible for pilot work orders of up to Rs 25 lakh from state departments. The policy also provides for reimbursements of Rs 5 lakh for domestic patents, Rs 20 lakh for international patents, Rs 5 lakh for quality certifications, as well as funding for participation in domestic and international exhibitions. The policy introduces a robust governance model anchored by a general body chaired by the Chief Minister, supported by a governing council and administered by the Maharashtra State Innovation Society (MSInS). Each state department will earmark 0.5% of its annual outlay for innovation and entrepreneurship promotion. A centralised startup registry will assign unique IDs to all eligible startups, incubators, mentors, and investors to ensure transparent access to government benefits. To strengthen access to capital, the policy will launch a Rs 200-crore venture fund with IDBI Capital, focusing on Deeptech, agritech, healthcare, sustainability and women-led startups. Additionally, a Rs 100-crore fund will be created with SIDBI, leveraging a 1:2 public-private capital structure. Provisions have also been made for CSR-linked incubators, social impact accelerators and regulatory sandbox frameworks to support innovation in emerging technologies. The digital component includes a mentorship platform, a real-time knowledge portal, and promotion of AI-based innovation using government open datasets. The policy integrates entrepreneurship courses into school and ITI curricula, and will utilise the 3.5% innovation allocation under District Annual Plans to promote grassroot innovations, local cluster developments and inclusive enterprises. 'This policy is structured to provide direction, financial backing and mentoring, so that young entrepreneurs don't waste years without support,' Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Minister for Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, said after the cabinet meeting. 'It's not just a policy of subsidies — it's a cohesive ecosystem strategy designed to position Maharashtra as India's leading innovation destination,' said Manisha Verma, Additional Chief Secretary of the Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Department. Maharashtra hosts over 14,000 women-led startups and is home to 27 of India's 117 unicorns, accounting for 23% of the national count. All 36 districts in Maharashtra have at least 20 recognised startups, reflecting a strong geographical spread. The state has received national accolades for administrative excellence and ranks among the top performers in the State Ranking Framework (2022–23). However, despite this scale, startup activity remains concentrated in urban centres like Mumbai and Pune. Rural regions, tier-2 cities, and emerging sectors such as Deeptech, AI, blockchain, and agritech remain underserved. There is a lack of decentralised incubation, limited procurement channels for early-stage startups, and insufficient global investor access. The 2025 policy aims to address these structural gaps by building a more inclusive, distributed, and sector-wise diversified startup ecosystem across the state.
