Petro Gazz bounces back with sweep win vs. Galeries
Less than 24 hours removed from a tough loss in its opener, Petro Gazz made sure to get the job done this time around after blanking Galeries, 25-23, 25-21, 26-24, to barge into the win column of PVL On Tour on Sunday in Batangas City.
The Angels bounced back from a heartbreaking five-set defeat against a rejigged Nxled yesterday to improve to 1-1 while the High Risers slipped to a 0-2 hole in Pool A.
A Jonah Sabete attack from the left side saw the reigning All-Filipino Conference champions taking an 18-16 lead in Set 3 before rookie Jean Asis continued to flaunt her brilliance by serving an ace to tie things up at 18-all.
Roselle Baliton then denied Joy Dacoron on the quick play to force another deadlock at 20-all, but they had to hold their breath after libero Blove Barbon went down with an apparent injury. That, however, only motivated Galeries, unleashing a 3-0 run led by Jewel Encarnacion as the wards of head coach Lerma Giron moved two points away from extending the match.
But Petro Gazz showed off its championship poise with Nicole Tiamzon coming up clutch, rejecting Ysa Jimenez on the opposite side before hitting it off the hands of Baliton to fuel a 4-0 rampage, 24-23.
Encarnacion would level it again at 24-all, but a service serror from her and another Tiamzon attack sealed the sweep victory for the Angels.

PVL: Prized setter Mars Alba parts ways with Choco Mucho
Mars Alba is set to open a new chapter in her career as the versatile setter parted ways with the Choco Mucho Flying Titans after almost two years since joining the club. Choco Mucho announced the development on Monday amid its ongoing campaign in the PVL On Tour and Alba's current stint with Alas Pilipinas Women in the VTV Cup in Vietnam. "Your exceptional playmaking and court smarts will remain significant contributions to the team. You'll always be a Titan. Good luck on your next chapter," Choco Mucho said in a Facebook post. Alba, a former setter for De La Salle University in the UAAP, joined Choco Mucho in January 2024 after her previous club F2 Logistics announced its disbandment. She, alongside libero Bia General and spiker Mean Mendrez, bolstered the Flying Titans following the departures of Denden Lazaro-Revilla, Caitlyn Viray, and Bea De Leon. With Alba's exit, Choco Mucho will still have Deanna Wong as well as rookie Tia Andaya as their main playmakers for the 2025 season. —Bea Micaller/JMB, GMA Integrated News

Matt Marton-Imagn Images/REUTERS/File photo James Harden declined his player option in order to sign a new two-year contract with the Los Angeles Clippers worth $81.5 million, ESPN reported Sunday. The 11-time All-Star guard will return to the Clippers after spending the past two seasons there. The second year of the new pact reportedly has a player option and partial guarantees. Harden, who turns 36 before next season begins, played 79 games (all starts) for Los Angeles in 2024-25 and averaged 22.8 points, 8.7 assists and 5.7 rebounds, though his 3-point shooting ticked down from 38.1 percent the year before to 35.2 percent. He was named to the All-NBA third team, his first All-NBA honor since 2019-20. Harden also put up 18.7 points, 9.1 assists and 5.4 rebounds per game during the Clippers' seven-game playoff loss to the Denver Nuggets in the first round. The Clippers were the fifth seed in the Western Conference but will strive for better postseason results with Harden at the center of their plans. —Field Level Media/Reuters

Lyann De Guzman impresses anew as Nxled shocks Choco Mucho

(Photo: PVL) Lyann De Guzman proved her impressive debut outing was no fluke, steering Nxled to yet another upset with a 25-20, 26-28, 27-25, 25-22 win against Choco Mucho in the PVL On Tour on Sunday in Batangas City. The star rookie poured in 24 points anchored on 20 attacks, three aces, and one block laced with nine digs and 12 receptions as the Chameleons went off to a hot 2-0 start. The Flying Titans, meanwhile, dropped to an even 1-1 card. "It was a collective effort from everyone, whoever is inside alam namin na maaasahan and everyone wanted to win," team captain Chiara Permentilla said in the post-game press conference. A rejection on De Guzman by veteran Choco Mucho spiker Honey Royse Tubino put the Flying Titans in the front seat as they took a slim 22-21 lead in the crucial fourth set. But Aduke Ogunsanya went short on her serve that promoted a 4-0 closing run by Nxled, who was coming off a stunning victory against the reigning All-Filipino Conference champion Petro Gazz yesterday. Another rookie in Mayang Nuique denied Isa Molde in the left side before Permentilla sent the Chameleons to the match point by unleashing a strong kill of her own, 24-22. De Guzman then unloaded an ace to cap off yet another stellar outing from her. Permentilla churned out 19 points on 15 attacks, three blocks, and one ace while Jovelyn Fernandez chipped in 14 markers. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
