Ontario paramedic fired for criticizing Israel on social media hopes to be reinstated
'I was about to be back on an ambulance at the end of July,' Katherine Grzejszczak said Thursday in her first public comments about the case.
'I was actually really excited and looking forward to going back out, to being a paramedic.'
Instead, the veteran paramedic said she was fired on June 20 after she criticized Israel's bombing of Gaza and several countries, and accused the country of starving Palestinian children and killing health-care workers in a comment on a union social media post.
The Regional Municipality of York said last month that officials launched an investigation into an employee's 'concerning comments on social media' on June 19, which led to a dismissal.

'I think it's extremely unfortunate that we are here,' said Grzejszczak, who served on the Canadian Union of Public Employees Ontario's executive board.
'It's not a good time, it has been an extremely emotionally difficult time for me.'
Grzejszczak told reporters that the comment she made was in line with her 'professional obligations' as a health worker.
'I love my job as a paramedic because it is first and foremost about preserving life and alleviating suffering,' she said, adding that calling for an end to 'a genocide is not a threat to public safety, it is public safety.'

'I really hope that I'm soon reinstated so that I can continue using my life saving skills to serve the residents of York Region,' she said at a news conference, surrounded by supporters and union members.
Her dismissal has triggered concern among free speech advocates and lawyers who say it was a violation of Grzejszczak's Charter rights.
'Whether one agrees or disagrees with the content of her Facebook post, she was exercising her Charter-protected right to freedom of expression,' Daniel Paré, a senior fellow at the Centre for Free Expression at Toronto Metropolitan University, said at the press conference.
He called on York Region to reinstate Grzejszczak, who has been a paramedic since 2010.

'She is to be judged on whether she meets her professional standards of care, not her political beliefs,' Paré said. 'And let's be clear, there has been no suggestion that Katherine's political beliefs have ever resulted in any inappropriate treatment of any patient.'
Reached for comment Thursday, a spokesperson for the Regional Municipality of York forwarded the statement originally issued in June about an employee's 'concerning comments.'
Patrick Casey also said 'there is no change from York Region since the matter was initially addressed.'
Krista Laing, the chair of CUPE Ontario Municipal Workers, said the entire process of firing Grzejszczak took less than 48 hours, and alleged there was no proper investigation.
She said the decision sets a precedent that should worry workers across the province, and CUPE will continue to fight for her reinstatement.
The Centre for Free Expression says it has seen an increase in the number of people being penalized for expressing their political views since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.
The latest war in Gaza began with the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, in which militants killed 1,200 people and took roughly 250 hostages.
Gaza's Health Ministry said earlier this week that the war's toll among Palestinians had surpassed 60,000. The ministry, which operates under the Hamas government, doesn't distinguish between militants and civilians in its count, but has said that more than half of the dead are women and children.

The United Nations and other independent experts view its figures as the most reliable count of casualties. Israel has disputed the figures, saying it only targets militants and it blames civilian deaths on Hamas.

This is a vast underestimate that does not include those buried under the rubble. The true death toll has been estimated to be closer to 300,000, more than half of which is accounted for by children. Babies, children and defenseless civilians are starving to death. Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem describes the development of a "genocidal regime in Israel, working to destroy Palestinian society in Gaza." Physicians for Human Rights – Israel (PHRI) has published a legal-medical analysis documenting the deliberate and systematic destruction of Gaza's healthcare system. Both Israeli organizations call on Israelis and the international community to take immediate action to stop the genocide, using all legal tools available under international law. Since May 27, 2025, approximately 1,400 Palestinians have been killed while seeking food at the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), according to the UN. The GHF is shooting and killing civilians seeking aid and has been described as a death trap by UN Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. The GHF must be immediately dismantled, with the reinstallation of UNRWA and a complete end to the Israeli blockade on Gaza. Lt Col. Anthony Aguilar, a retired US Green Beret and former Gaza Humanitarian Foundation contractor, describes what he saw on the ground in Gaza while trying to distribute aid to starving Palestinians. He recounts meeting a young 10-year-old emaciated boy, Amir, who had walked 10km without shoes, food or water to try to get food. After getting a few items of food, he thanked Mr Aguilar and his colleague for the aid he was able to retrieve. Moments later, Amir was "gunned down" and killed as the IDF soldiers began to shoot to get the crowds to disperse after distribution of food. "We have no excuse as a a world to look at this and say we didn't know," said Anthony Aguilar. We have questions for the Honourable Anita Anand about Canadian complicity in this genocide, about continued Canadian military exports to the state of Israel, and about Canadian military imports from Israel. Why did the government invent a 'non-lethal' category to continue to allow the export of military goods and technologies? This category is not reflected in the government's annual reports on exports of military goods and technology, with the exception of the case of Israel, and only since Jan 8, 2024. Can the Minister account for the $18M dollars of exports to Israel in 2024? What was exported? What are the items in these categories from 2024? Netanyahu hints at expanded war in Gaza but former Israeli military and spy chiefs object
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted at wider military action in devastated Gaza on Tuesday, even as former Israeli army and intelligence chiefs called for an end to the nearly 22-month war. The new pressure on Netanyahu came as Gaza's Health Ministry said the Palestinian death toll had surpassed 61,000. Health officials reported new deaths of hungry Palestinians seeking food at distribution points. As desperation mounts, the Israeli defense body coordinating aid announced a deal with local merchants to improve aid deliveries.

Gaza doesn't need empty statements. It needs food, dignity, justice and action — now

The images of Gaza tell us everything we need to know: charred children, weeping mothers clutching lifeless infants, fathers burying their children in plastic bags and entire families erased in a single airstrike have been shown repeatedly alongside the long lines of thirsty and hungry people waiting for what will never come. What more must Gaza show for the world to act? It's what countless experts, and a UN special committee have named a genocide. And it's happening in real time, livestreamed on the internet. The world knows and the response from the international community has failed a moral test.
