Farrell on the bench for Lions against Australia-New Zealand
The former England captain is set to end a period in the international wilderness as the Lions continue their nine-game tour with their fifth and final warm-up on Saturday.
Farrell made the dash to Australia last week after his father, Lions coach Andy Farrell, summoned him as cover when utility back Elliot Daly broke his arm.
The 33-year-old, on his fourth Lions tour, earned the last of his 112 Test caps at the 2023 World Cup, and is coming off an underwhelming and injury-plagued season with French club Racing 92.
The Lions are unbeaten in four matches in Australia after wins over four Super Rugby sides, including 36-24 against ACT Brumbies on Wednesday in Canberra.
But they endured a sloppy performance against the Brumbies, with notable issues around the breakdown.
Numerous changes
The Lions have made numerous changes with Tadhg Beirne to take the captaincy reins, while young star Henry Pollock returns.
Scrum-half Ben White will make his first start for the Lions.
The Australia-New Zealand side, the first time the powerhouses have joined forces since 1989, will be led jointly by David Havili and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto.
Coach Les Kiss picked 17 internationals in his matchday 23 for Saturday's final warm-up game for the Lions before they face Australia in the opening Test on July 19 in Brisbane.
"We are in a great position just over a week out from the first Test," coach Farrell said.
"The players now have another chance to put in a strong team performance and put a hand up for selection for the Test matches against the Wallabies.
"Les Kiss has assembled a strong squad with lots of international experience and we know that he will have them well organised and they will bring a lot of physicality to the contest.'
British Lions XV (15-1):Hugo Keenan; Mack Hansen, Huw Jones, Sione Tuipulotu, Duhan van Der Merwe; Fin Smith, Ben White; Ben Earl, Jac Morgan, Henry Pollock; Tadhg Beirne (capt), James Ryan; Will Stuart, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Pierre Schoeman
Replacements: Ronan Kelleher, Andrew Porter, Finlay Bealham, Scott Cummings, Josh van der Flier, Alex Mitchell, Marcus Smith, Owen Farrell

South Korea's Lee carves out narrow halfway lead at Evian
The 26-year-old carded six birdies and an eagle in the lowest round of the day to go top of the leaderboard on 10-under. She is just above Australia's Grace Kim, one of five players who were in a five-way tie at the summit overnight. Lee has only once finished in the top 10 at a major, sharing eighth place at last month's Women's PGA Championship. "Tee shots are really important on this course, but mine weren't great today," admitted Lee. "But I managed to make up for it with some solid putting." Lee is coming off a victory alongside compatriot Im Jin-hee in the LPGA Dow Championship pairs event in Michigan. "I'm trying to put the last tournament behind me and focus on the present," she said. "Right now, I'm concentrating on my putter and driver, keeping my rhythm – and we'll see where that takes me." Kim signed for a steady 68 featuring four birdies and a bogey, with American Jennifer Kupcho, a former runner-up in the Evian, one shot further back after going round in 69. "I knew how punishing this course can be, so I just focused on hitting fairways and greens. I kept things simple, and it paid off today," said Kim. Three players sit in a tie for fourth place, with South Africa's Casandra Alexander, South Korea's Choi Hye-jin and and American Andrea Lee all on seven-under for the tournament. Australian Gabriela Ruffels and Ireland's Leona Maguire, among the leading pack on Thursday, both dropped back after signing for even-par 71s. World number one Nelly Korda is five strokes off the pace following a one-under 70 in round two. The American is targeting a third major title and first since last year's Chevron. Korda started poorly with two bogeys and then a double bogey on the 16th hole before finding some form on the front nine, where she made three birdies to claw back into contention.

Springbok scrum-half speedster Williams gets chance to impress
Speedster Williams can also operate as a winger -- a plus as head coach Rassie Erasmus favours those who can operate in more than one position. There are five scrum-halves seeking to top the pecking order, including two-time World Cup winner Faf de Klerk. De Klerk was omitted for an end-of-season tour to Europe last year, but the 33-year-old came off the bench in an unimpressive 42-24 win over Italy in Pretoria last Saturday. Cobus Reinach, who will be on the bench in eastern coastal city Gqeberha, Jaden Hendricks and new kid on the block Morne van den Berg are the other challengers. Van den Berg scored two tries and was one of the few Springboks to emerge from the victory over the Azzurri in Pretoria last Saturday with his reputation intact. But he will miss the second and final Test against Italy because Erasmus wants to rotate his matchday 23 to assess all those in his 45-man squad. After the series against Italy, only two forwards, uncapped prop Boan Venter and regular captain and flanker Siya Kolisi, will not have worn the green and gold after three matches this season. Glasgow-based Venter is likely to win his first cap against Georgia on July 19 in Mbombela while a stiff neck, then an Achilles tendon "niggle" have kept Kolisi sidelined. "It was a tough decision to rest Kolisi, but I feel the wise decision was to rest him for another week," Erasmus told reporters. "It is not a serious injury, but you know how an Achilles tendon is, if you rest it another week it can only be better for the player. Hopefully he will play next week." 'Fantastic playmaker' Le Roux Veteran full-back Willie le Roux is poised to become only the eighth Springbok to be capped 100 times -- 12 years after making his debut in Durban against Italy. "Willie has been a stalwart for us in the past few years and a fantastic playmaker. We are thrilled to see him achieve this incredible feat," said Erasmus. "I have no doubt he will put the team before his own achievement, and the team would certainly like to make it a special and memorable occasion for him." Le Roux, 35, is among 11 changes to the Pretoria starting line-up and the bench includes three uncapped players -- wing/centre Ethan Hooker, prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye and lock/flanker Cobus Wiese. "Italy are a brave and tough team and we know that their performance last week will psyche them up going into the second Test," said Erasmus. "They will come hard at us and deliver another passionate performance. We need to shift into a different gear (after) an honest and thorough review of what happened last weekend." Italy coach and former Argentina fly-half Gonzalo Quesada has made four personnel changes and one positional as they seek a first victory in South Africa over the record four-time World Cup winners. Mirko Belloni wins a first cap at full-back, replacing Jacopo Trulla, who moves to the left wing with Simone Gesi dropping out. Alessandro Garbisi takes over from Alessandro Fusco at scrum-half, South Africa-born number 8 Ross Vintcent replaces injured Lorenzo Cannone and flanker Sebastian Negri comes in for Alessandro Izekor. Like Erasmus, Quesada wants to add depth to his squad with only five starters from the final 2025 Six Nations match against Ireland retaining their places. Gqeberha has not been a happy hunting ground for Italy, who lost 74-3 and 60-14 in previous visits to the "windy city".

Kiss's combined Aus-NZ side out to 'light up' Lions tour
Seventeen internationals are in coach Les Kiss's matchday 23 for the clash in Adelaide as the two rugby powerhouses join forces for the first time since 1989. Andy Farrell's tourists have won all four games so far in Australia and are hot favourites to dominate the opening Test in Brisbane on July 19. But Kiss believes his side can spring a surprise despite a limited build up, leaving the Lions heading to Queensland on the back of a demoralising loss. "If we got a win, yeah, it'll definitely light things up, wouldn't it," said Kiss, who will take over from Joe Schmidt as Wallabies coach next year. "The win would be great for us and we've already talked about making sure we don't get lost in that. "But we know that we have the capacity and the type of play to do that. We just need to make sure we do what we do well, and if we do that well, why not? "A win, or a loss for the Lions, certainly changes the way that the tour looks." Every player in Kiss's starting XV has international caps, spearheaded by All Blacks David Havili, Shannon Frizell and Hoskins Sotutu. The Australian contingent is led by Marika Koroibete, Pete Samu and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto. Kiss said they had been socialising a lot this week, as well as training, to get to know each other, with many in the team never having played together, or even met, before. "This has been a slow build but there is certainly a lot of ambition and a lot of belief in the group already, you can feel it," he said. "They want to go out there and show the best of themselves." Havili and Salakaia-Loto are co-captains with the New Zealand inside centre confident they can create problems. "We all want to win, but it's about how we do that," said Havili, who recently led the Canterbury Crusaders to the Super Rugby title. "They are a great quality side and we've only been together for six or seven days. "But we've got some awesome opportunities in front of us and we just want to be able to go out there and express ourselves, both as Aussies and Kiwis. © 2025 AFP
