Ayala-led ACEN Corporation and Singapore-headquartered UPC Renewables have broken ground on two major renewable energy projects in India that are expected to generate a combined 1,158 gigawatt hours (GWh) annually.
The 420-megawatt solar farm in Barmer, Rajasthan is projected to produce 767 GWh annually, while the 120-megawatt wind farm in Karnataka is expected to deliver 391 GWh through harnessing monsoonal wind patterns and favorable terrain.
The projects are slated to be completed early 2027, enough to power 241,000 homes and avoid over 876,000 tons of carbon emissions yearly. They are also expected to create over 1,500 green jobs during construction.
'These new projects represent not just scale, but momentum—as we continue to turn opportunities into action,' ACEN International chief executive officer and group chief investment officer Patrice Clausse said in a statement.
The new projects will be on top of joint partnerships between ACEN and UPC in India: the 420-megawatt Masaya Solar, the 70-megawatt Paryapt Solar, and the 140-megawatt Sitara Solar.
'The projects are part of a broader pipeline of 1 GWp+ RE projects, which we aim to deliver over the next two years and plays a meaningful role in India's green energy transition,' UPC Renewables India chief executive officer Alok Nigam said in the same statement.
Aside from India and its core market of the Philippines, ACEN also has presence in Australia, Vietnam, and Lao PDR, along with investments in Indonesia and other markets.
ACEN ended the first quarter of 2025 with a P2.083-billion net income, down from P2.935 billion the same quarter last year, as revenues fell to P7.767 billion from P9.853 billion amid the lower generation in the Philippine market. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

Salmon Bank to apply for advanced EPFS license in July
Financial technology firm Salmon Group Ltd. is set to apply for an advanced electronic payment and financial services (EPFS) license with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) by July, which will allow customers to make more digital services such as fund transfers and bills payments. According to Salmon co-founder Raffy Montemayor, the Rural Bank of Sta. Rosa (Laguna) or Salmon Bank is set to apply for the advanced EPFS license by July in a bid to boost its daily banking products. 'That one requires an advanced EPFS license, so we're in the process of preparing for that… We're just about to put it together. By next month we would want to apply for the advanced EPFS so that we can build towards a daily banking suite of products,' he told GMA News Online in an interview. 'Daily banking for us is about the suite of products that allows customers to meet their daily needs like pay their bills, transfer to other banks and e-wallets, save. All these products together, being able to do that through our mobile app, that's what we're focused on,' he added. Under BSP Circular 1033, an advanced EPFS allows supervised financial institutions to offer fund transfers and other transactions beyond primary services such as account balance inquiries, that are included in the basic EPFS license. Aside from the advanced EPFS license, Salmon Bank is also looking to upgrade its license into a thrift bank, coinciding with its $150-million Nordic bond framework agreement. It recently raised $88 million from the latest fundraising round which includes $60 million in bonds. 'The equity of the bank as of now is P680 million which already meets the minimum requirements for a thrift bank, but there's a lot more to do in terms of putting all the board committees, the frameworks policies, the processes in place to give the BSP confidence that we are ready to make that come through,' Montemayor said. 'It's something that we hope to be able to do within the next year, subject of course to BSP approval. It really depends on the readiness of the BSP to say 'You guys are good',' he added. Moving forward, Montemayor said Salmon is looking to put up three more branches in the next year, complementing the two it already has in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, and Bacoor, Cavite. The bank is now in the process of negotiating with potential landlords. 'Our intention is to open one in BGC, one in Cebu, and one in CDO (Cagayan de Oro.) We're going through the process for the branch application. It takes time on our side also to be ready, we want to provide a branch experience that is unlike that you would get from a traditional bank, so it takes time to put together such an experience,' he said. Salmon last year said it targets to grow its loan portfolio to $2 billion in the next three to five years, as it seeks to expand its customer base by catering to what it calls the 'neglected' market and stepping into other countries in Southeast Asia. It ended 2024 with a P1.2-billion loan portfolio. —RF, GMA Integrated News

SM hospitality arm earmarks P5.3 billion for 5-year MICE expansion
SM Hotels and Convention Corp. (SMHCC), the hospitality arm of Sy-led property giant SM Prime Holdings Inc., is embarking on an expansion initiative for its meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) footprint. In a statement, SM Prime said SMHCC has set aside a P5.3-billion investment to ramp up its MICE portfolio over the next five years. The Sy family's property developer said its hospitality arm's expansion will begin with two major developments in Cebu and Pasay. SM Prime said the SMX Convention Center Seaside Cebu is set to open in the third quarter of 2026. SMX Cebu is poised to be one of the largest and most modern convention venues in the Visayas. The convention center in the "Queen City of the South" will have 21,000 square meters of leasable space across six levels, directly integrated with the SM Seaside Arena and SM Seaside Cebu Mall. SMHCC also broke ground on SMXCITE at the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City last April. SMXCITE, set to open in the first quarter of 2027, is seen to add 18,000 square meters of leasable space to the existing 17,000 square meters at SMX Manila, enabling SMHCC to accommodate large-scale, concurrent events. "Our expansion into Cebu and Pasay reflects our strong belief in the potential of these cities. By building next-generation venues with scale and flexibility, we are enabling more communities to benefit from the business and tourism opportunities that MICE events bring," said SMHCC executive vice president Peggy Angeles. These projects are part of SMHCC's broader strategy to grow its events portfolio outside Metro Manila and support economic activity in emerging urban centers, according to SM Prime. The Sy-led property developer said each SMX venue is co-located with hotels, malls and transport infrastructure to provide seamless access for organizers and guests. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
