Chamberlain shines as Bulls dominate Currie Cup opener

Bulls coach Phiwe Nomlomo has lauded flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain for his pivotal performance in the Bulls' emphatic 48-23 victory over Western Province at the Cape Town Stadium at the weekend.
Chamberlain has had a challenging time at the Bulls since joining them from the Sharks, struggling for game time in the United Rugby Championship. However, in the Currie Cup opener, he shrugged off the rust, expertly guiding the Bulls to a six-try win.
Scrumhalf Zak Burger and Number 8 Jeandré Rudolph each contributed two tries. Chamberlain was flawless with his kicking, converting all eight attempts at goal – six conversions and two penalties.

'The last time Boeta started a game was about five months ago, and to come out and put in a performance like he did, I'm sure he'll be incredibly chuffed,' Nomlomo said. 'That bravery to keep pushing the boundary – that was class.'
Nomlomo expressed particular pride in his team's first-half performance, which saw them lead 38-16 at the break.
'We were clinical,' he stated.
'That's where everything started. I think when you're up against the blue machine and it's going like that, it is a bit difficult to play against. Province were incredibly gutsy, but their discipline didn't help them at all and probably killed the game for them.'
The home team suffered three first-half sin-bins, with captain Zain Davids and locks Gary Porter and Alex Groves all receiving yellow cards for breakdown infringements. At one point, Western Province struggled to scrummage due to a lack of locks on the field.
This week, the Bulls will host a Sharks side still reeling from a significant defeat by the Lions at Ellis Park.

Perhaps more importantly, this clash could well set the tone and give an early indication of whether the Brazilians are going to canter to a ninth successive league title or whether the Buccaneers will offer serious resistance — if not halt the yellow and royal blue juggernaut altogether. Pirates — 2-0 winners over Polokwane City on Saturday — will host the first leg of the semifinal in two weeks' time as they seek to win the season-opening tournament a record-extending four times in a row. The other semi-final pits last year's beaten semif-inalists Stellenbosch FC — who overcame AmaZulu 3-2 in extra-time — against Sekhukhune United, with the Cape Winelands team at home first. Ba Bina Noko also won by the same scoreline, albeit within normal time against TS Galaxy. The result of this match was never in doubt, given Sundowns' domination of this fixture — the Brazilians have never lost to the Natal Rich Boys. The only question was by how many goals Miguel Cardoso's men would win, and it became clear early on that the margin would be substantial. Iqraam Rayners helped himself to a brace, opening the scoring with a simple header from a Marcelo Allende corner as early as the 10th minute. Siyabonga Mabena delighted the crowd — and his teammates — when he came off the bench to score the fourth. The youngster showed maturity and poise during a solo run, firing home from the edge of the area to underline his status as a future superstar. The victory was a clear statement from Sundowns that they remain the team to beat this season, despite the impending departure of some key players. The big news prior to kick-off was the absence of stars such as Lucas Ribeiro, Khuliso Mudau and Peter Shalulile, all of whom are set to leave Chloorkop for clubs abroad. Yet, an uninformed observer might not have noticed their absence, as Sundowns dominated possession — as always — and looked threatening whenever they surged forward. In round three, Griquas host winless Western Province in Kimberley on Friday afternoon, while Boland return to Wellington for a clash with the unbeaten Lions on Sunday. Two quickfire tries from scrumhalf Caleb Abrahams sparked a Griquas comeback to beat the Boland Kavaliers in Kimberley on Sunday. Griquas logged their first win of the 2025 Currie Cup, scoring five second-half tries to bounce back from a 34-19 deficit at the break and win 48-39. Abrahams was matched by winger Gurshwin Wehr's try double while flyhalf George Whitehead starred off the tee, contributing 14 points to cancel out a brace of tries from Boland's Blitzboks flyer, Donovan Don. Captain Nama Xaba was also pleased with the performance, though he remained rooted in reality. 'We always want to strive for perfection but it is unrealistic to get there. Tonight's performance was excellent. We managed the first 20 according to plan and the mid-40. It took us forward. I'm proud of the guys.' Xaba pointed to the breakdown as an area for improvement. 'They put us under pressure there. The set piece was good. I can't complain about much. A week is a long time in rugby and we have to look to build on this.' For the Sharks it was another day to forget. 'We can't feel sorry for ourselves,' said downcast captain Nick Hatton. 'That was tough to take. Credit to the Bulls, They dominated the game. We got a tough lesson. 'A lot of the young guys showed some fight towards the end. We were outdone physically which was disappointing for us that we didn't stand up physically. 'It is a privilege to wear this jersey and we are not doing it justice at the moment. We are going to pick ourselves up. We are not going to feel sorry for ourselves and do what we need to do and stay in the fight. All we can promise is that we'll keep on fighting,' Hatton added.
