The 2024 college football season has been another challenging year for one of the sport's most historic programs.

The Oklahoma Sooners have long been considered a gold standard in college football. They rank No. 6 all-time in wins with 950 and No. 5 in win percentage. Additionally, they are No. 9 in national championships with seven and have secured 50 conference championships.
However, last season marked their second 6-7 record in three years under head coach Brent Venables, a feat that had not occurred at Oklahoma since the 1998 season. During "The Paul Finebaum Show" on the SEC Network, it was suggested that Venables may not survive another disappointing season.

"He's had two bad years out of three," Finebaum said. "Oklahoma is not going to put up with that another year."

If the Sooners were to let Venables go, it would come at a hefty price. Venables' buyout stands at $34.9 million after this season. This speculation from Finebaum comes just one year after Venables signed a big contract extension.
Venables signed a six-year deal following the 2023 season, which the Oklahoma Board of Regents approved in June 2024. The contract guarantees him an annual salary of over $8.5 million throughout its duration.
Initially, he signed a six-year, $43.5 million contract with the Sooners in December 2021. Venables' contract is fully guaranteed, and after this season, his buyout will decrease by nearly $10 million each year until the contract expires.
There is some optimism this season for the Sooners, as they have added former Washington State Cougars quarterback John Mateer and former California Golden Bears running back Jaydn Ott to their roster.

Last season, Mateer threw for 3,139 yards, recording 29 touchdowns and just seven interceptions, while rushing for 826 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns. Although Ott struggled with injuries during the 2024 season, he had a strong performance in 2023, rushing for 1,315 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns.
They hope to lead Venables' team to a bounce-back season. Oklahoma is set to open the season at 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 30 against the Illinois State Redbirds.

Lakers Implored to Sign Former No. 1 Pick Amid Shocking Buyout

Lakers Implored to Sign Former No. 1 Pick Amid Shocking Buyout originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One thing that becomes clear each summer is that, no matter how folks around the league see things breaking, there is always going to be a monkey wrench that is thrown into the works. And if you're an NBA team--like the Lakers, for example--it behooves you to remain in position to take advantage of the mess left behind when other teams see their works get wrenched up. Advertisement On Sunday, ESPN's Shams Charania reported a shocking development coming out of Portland, where surprise developments have been routine lately. Center Deandre Ayton, the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA draft, is nearing a contract buyout with the Blazers. Ayton went to Portland in a trade with the Suns, who opted to pick him out of Arizona No. 1 overall instead of the then-young Slovenian guard Luka Doncic. The Suns and Ayton could not come to an agreement in restricted free agency and he was shipped to Portland in 2023. Mandatory Credit: Troy Wayrynen-Imagn Images In seven NBA seasons, Ayton has averaged 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds. He has struggled to stay healthy--Ayton played 95 games in the past two seasons--but is a very good offensive center. That has Lakers fans immediately scurrying to their keyboards to implore L.A. to sign Ayton to fill the team's glaring big-man gap. Advertisement Ayton has $35.5 million left on his deal in the final year of his contract. He figures to get most, if not all, of that paid out in a buyout. If he is willing to take a minimum deal for this season in hopes of rebuilding his value and returning to free agency next summer, he could be a good fit for the Lakers. ' Offensively, at least. The Lakers need some level of rim protection from whomever they add as a center, and though he averages 1.0 blocks per game, he is not much of a defender in the paint. Still, the idea of adding his size and offensive skill at a bargain cost had Lakers fans bustling on Sunday. Advertisement "Lakers get Ayton," one fan wrote on X, simply. Another Lakers fan account stated, "Lakers could get there (sic) center and not give up any assets!!!" "It's so obvious he's a laker. Lebron and Luka making him average 20-15 a game," another added. "I swear I saw someone yesterday say that Ayton would sign with the Lakers today. Did they know?" another wondered. Again, getting Ayton on the cheap would be a win for the Lakers. Until the need for some defense kicks in, at least. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 30, 2025, where it first appeared.

Exciting Golden State Warriors Announcement Made on Monday

Exciting Golden State Warriors Announcement Made on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Golden State Warriors fans did not have the best experience this past season. The Warriors faithful—or at least the majority of them—were delighted after the team successfully brought in Jimmy Butler via a mid-season blockbuster trade. Advertisement The bold move paid dividends for the Warriors as Butler played a pivotal role in helping secure the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference. Golden State, however, came crashing out in the second round of the NBA playoffs courtesy of the Minnesota Timberwolves. This came after former back-to-back MVP Steph Curry suffered what turned out to be a season-ending hamstring injury. It's going to be a very interesting offseason for the Warriors as they look to make some crucial personnel decisions ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. Right now, the priority would be to surround Curry with the most formidable squad possible as they look to challenge for the championship this coming season. Younger supporters, on the other hand, have the opportunity to learn the game through the team's offseason offerings. Advertisement This includes the highly anticipated Overnight Camps, which are making a comeback this year. There are currently two overnight basketball camp sessions available for kids aged 9 to 16, which will be held on July 5 to 8 and on July 31 to Aug. 3. Both camps will be held at Sephora Performance Center in Oakland and will feature multiple Warriors players as the camps' special guests. It was already announced previously that Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis will feature in the first session. The Warriors, via the Golden State Sports Academy, announced on Monday that incoming third-year forward Gui Santos will be the special guest for the second overnight camp. "From 🇧🇷 to the Bay to Camp II 🤩 HYPED to announce our special guest at our second overnight camp of the summer season, @guisantos_4" the post from GS Sports Academy wrote, which the Warriors shared via their Instagram story. Santos is far from a star, but he was able to earn himself a relatively solid role in head coach Steve Kerr's rotation last season. In his second year with the Warriors, the 6-foot-8 power forward averaged 4.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 13.6 minutes per contest. Advertisement Santos should be able to provide camp participants with some excellent insight on his NBA journey, as well as share some of his skills and best practices with the kids who are looking to improve their game. Registration is now open via the camp's official website, which is priced at $900 for the Extended Day Option and $1,200 for the Overnight Option. James Harden Gets a Raise After Agreeing to Two-Year Extension With Clippers

James Harden Gets a Raise After Agreeing to Two-Year Extension With Clippers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The first domino of the Los Angeles Clippers' offseason has officially fallen. Shortly after the team was eliminated from this year's NBA playoffs, it was reported that their priority was to take care of James Harden's contract situation before making any other big moves. Advertisement Now that is officially out of the way for the Clippers. Los Angeles Clippers guard James HardenGary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Harden entered the offseason with a player option for the 2025-26 NBA season that would have been worth $36.35 million. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, Harden has decided to decline that player option and agreed to a new deal with the Clippers that will give him a nice raise. The new contract is worth $81.5 million over the next two seasons and carries a player option for the 2026-27 season. If he ends up picking up the player option next year, his contract will line up with Kawhi Leonard's, who is under contract for two more years himself. Advertisement That would keep the team's two biggest stars on the same timeline as the Clippers attempt to keep their contention window open. Harden is coming off of his best season since leaving the Houston Rockets at the 2021 trade deadline. He stepped up on the offensive end for a Clippers team that struggled to score, bringing his scoring average up to 22.8 points per game after only scoring 16.6 per game during the 2023-24 season. He also contributed 8.7 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game while seeing improvements on the defensive side of the ball. Harden's efforts earned him spot in the All-Star game and his first All-NBA honors since the 2019-20 season. Advertisement Now he's secured himself a nice payday to try and lead the Clippers into the Western Conference's upper echelon and the Clippers can shift their focus to building a contending supporting cast around him and Leonard.
