OTTAWA - Canada's military used aircraft to help evacuate members of a remote Indigenous group on June 9 as wildfires spread eastward from the Prairies region and into the country's most populous province Ontario.
An airlift of Sandy Lake First Nation members started over the weekend as a 156,346ha blaze overwhelmed firefighting efforts and brushed up against the remote Indigenous community.
Wildfires in recent weeks have swept across densely wooded parts of the vast Prairies forcing more than 30,000 people in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to flee their homes.
The latter two provinces have declared states of emergency.
The evacuation of Sandy Lake, an isolated community about 600km north of Thunder Bay with no road access, is the largest mobilisation so far in Ontario.
Currently the fires are raging in the province's sparsely populated north-west corner and have so far not threatened the densely inhabited south, which includes Toronto and its suburbs – home to some seven million people.
As of midday on June 9, military Hercules aircraft had evacuated one third of the town's 3,000 residents, Sandy Lake First Nation Chief Delores Kakegamic told AFP by telephone.
It has been slow-going, she said, as these bulky but nimble aircraft were only able take off half-full with passengers because of the community's short airstrip.
'Rapidly deteriorated' conditions
'We're prepared to mobilise every resource needed to keep Canadians safe,' Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on X.
He announced the military deployment late on June 8 after meeting with senior officials in Ottawa.
The military said in an email to AFP, 'wildfire conditions in northern Ontario have rapidly deteriorated.'
'Over the last 24 hours, (the Sandy Lake) wildfire has advanced from 40km to just 2km from the community, placing the population at immediate risk,' it added.
On June 7, 19 construction workers took refuge for several hours in a shipping container in the community as the skies turned orange and the air filled with smoke.
'A helicopter tried to go pick them up but the smoke was so bad they couldn't land,' Ms Kakegamic said.
Moments before the shipping container itself caught on fire, they made a run for it. 'It was a narrow escape,' Ms Kakegamic said. 'They've been traumatised, for sure.'
There were 227 active wildfires across Canada as of June 8, including about 20 in Ontario.
Some 3.1 million hectares of forests have been scorched in 2025 and hundreds of buildings destroyed in several small towns.
Images shared by wildfire agencies showed blackened and devastated landscapes left behind fast-moving walls of fire and big plumes of smoke.
The fires have downgraded air quality in parts of Canada and the United States.
Smoke, which can be hazardous to health, has also reached as far away as Europe.
Climate change has increased the impact of extreme weather events in Canada, which is still recovering from the summer of 2023 when 15 million hectares of forests burned.
Most of the ongoing fires in 2025 have been triggered by human activity – often accidental – such as poorly extinguished campfires or the passing of vehicles in extremely dry areas. AFP

As trade war truce with China holds, US lifts curbs for chip design software and ethane

REUTERS/Florence Lo/Illustration/File Photo NEW YORK - The United States has lifted restrictions on exports to China for chip design software developers and ethane producers, a further sign of de-escalating U.S.-Sino trade tensions including concessions from Beijing over rare earths. Synopsys, Cadence Design Systems and Siemens, three of the world's largest electronic design automation (EDA) software developers, said on Wednesday they are restoring access to their software and technology for customers in China. Earlier in the day, the U.S. also sent letters to ethane producers to rescind a restrictive licensing requirement on exports to China imposed in late May and June. The restrictions on EDA software developers and ethane producers were just some of many countermeasures imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration in response to China's export suspension of rare earths and related magnets in April. Beijing's move on rare earths, part of retaliation against Trump's earlier tariffs this year, has upended supply chains central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors. The issue threatened to scupper a bilateral trade deal. On Friday, China's commerce ministry said that following talks with the U.S., the two sides have confirmed a framework under which China will review export applications for controlled items while the U.S. will cancel corresponding restrictive measures. "The U.S. have escalated to de-escalate. They put restrictions on many more items in order to get the Chinese to back off on rare earths," according to a source familiar with discussions inside the U.S. government. Top stories Swipe. Going back to a status quo, where we were at in Feb/March," said the source who was not authorised to speak to media and declined to be identified. EDA RELIEF Siemens said in a statement that it has resumed sales and support for Chinese customers after it was recently notified by the U.S. Department of Commerce that export control restrictions for customers in China were no longer in place. Synopsys expects to complete system updates to restore access and support to Chinese customers within three business days, according to a company letter to staff seen by Reuters. The U.S. Department of Commerce did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Long-term restrictions on Chinese access to EDA software would have significantly hampered China's chip design industry. Synopsys, Cadence and Siemens command more than 70% of China's EDA market, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported in April. It was not immediately clear if other countermeasures imposed by the U.S. have been lifted. These include the suspension of licenses for GE Aerospace to ship jet engines for the C919 aircraft of Chinese airplane maker COMAC and for nuclear equipment suppliers to sell to Chinese power plants. Picture taken July 4, 2021. REUTERS/Jaimi Joy/File Photo SYDNEY - The Australian government has confirmed it will contribute A$3.435 billion ($2.25 billion) towards the A$7.1 billion cost of building the venues for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, clearing the way for the start of construction. Queensland taxpayers and private finance will provide the balance of the money for the 17 new and upgraded venues for the Summer Games under the funding deal announced by state and federal governments on Thursday. "The Sydney 2000 Games left an incredible legacy and many Australians have memories that have lasted for decades," Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said in a statement. "We are ready to deliver a Brisbane 2032 games that will leave the same incredible legacy for Queensland. "The Australian government's commitment of A$3.4 billion towards the Games venues is the single largest contribution any Australian government has made towards sporting infrastructure in this country." Brisbane was awarded hosting rights for the Games in 2021 but political wrangling over the venues meant the final plans were not decided until March this year. Organising committee chief Andrew Liveris welcomed Thursday's announcement as a "significant shift in forward momentum". Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. The main stadium, which is estimated to cost A$3.7 billion, will be built in the city's Victoria Park and seat 60,000 during the Olympics and 3,000 more for Australian Rules football and cricket matches after 2032. A new aquatics centre to host the swimming in 2032 will also be built nearby at an estimated cost of A$650 million. "Today's landmark agreement is the beginning of a new partnership that sets the pathway to deliver 2032 as the best Games ever," said Queensland's Deputy Prime Minister Jarrod Bleijie. "We've also launched procurement on four key projects to kickstart the delivery of world-class venues in the delivery plan. "I can also announce that we will start site investigations at Victoria Park for Australia's most exciting sporting precinct that will be home to the new main stadium and the new National Aquatic Centre." Liveris said in May that he did not think any ground would be broken on the two major new venues until the end of 2026. The federal government has already committed A$12.4 billion for local transport improvements that the Queensland government believes are necessary for 2032, the statement said. REUTERS

South Korea's Lee pledges 'bold' economic policy after martial law crisis

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox South Korean President Lee Jae Myung delivers a speech during a press conference to mark his first 30 days in office at Yeongbingwan of Blue House on July 3, 2025 in Seoul, South Korea. Kim Min-Hee/Pool via REUTERS SEOUL - South Korean President Lee Jae Myung vowed on Thursday to implement a "bold" fiscal policy to boost a flagging economy after the country's martial law crisis and to tackle challenges posed by looming U.S. tariffs and North Korea. Lee, who was elected on June 3 in a snap election, said it was his top priority to improve the lives of the people, whose faith in government had been greatly shaken by "a national crisis" that hammered Asia's fourth-largest economy. "It is a time when the proactive and bold role of national finance is more important than ever," Lee, who has pledged to implement expansionary fiscal policy, said in his opening remarks at a news conference to mark 30 days in office. Lee's predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol, declared martial law in December, shocking a nation that had come to pride itself as a thriving democracy having overcome military dictatorship in the 1980s and triggering an unprecedented constitutional crisis. Lee's administration has proposed $14.7 billion of extra government spending to support sluggish domestic demand. Parliament controlled by his Democratic Party is expected to vote on the budget bill soon. The president also said in his opening remarks that he was doing his best to achieve a "mutually beneficial and sustainable" outcome from trade negotiations with the United States. South Korea is hoping to contain the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's threatened punishing tariffs that could weigh on an export-reliant economy with major semiconductor, auto and steel industries. During high-level trade talks last month, Washington raised issues related to South Korea's non-tariff barriers, as Seoul already imposes nearly zero tariffs on U.S. imports under a free trade agreement, a senior South Korean trade official has said. Lee, a liberal former human rights lawyer, said the alliance with the United States was the cornerstone of his foreign policy, but pledged a pragmatic approach as the basis of a speedy effort to improve ties with China and Russia. Peace with North Korea was not only a national security priority, but a crucial part of a "virtuous cycle of peace and economic growth," he said. Lee said tension with Pyongyang has had a real negative economic impact despite South Korea's strong military capabilities, funded by a defence budget larger than the North's total economic output. "Even if you're at war, you have to have diplomacy and dialogue. To completely cut off dialogue is truly foolish," Lee said when asked about his plans on relations with Pyongyang. The two Koreas remain technically in a state of war under a truce that ended fighting in 1953. He said he had been surprised by the swift response from North Korea after he suspended loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts directed across the border and said he would take additional steps to ease tensions. Under Yoon, who took a hard line against Pyongyang, the two sides scrapped a 2018 military agreement that sharply escalated hostility. REUTERS
