The Syrian government is evacuating hundreds of Bedouin families trapped inside the southern city of Suwayda, where a fragile ceasefire is holding after Druze and Bedouin fighters fought for a week.
The first Bedouin families left on Monday on buses and trucks accompanied by Syrian Arab Red Crescent vehicles and ambulances. They were taken to nearby Daraa as the government plans to evacuate 1,500 people.
'At least 500 people have already left on 10 buses this morning, and more are expected to exit Suwayda in the next few hours,' Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall said about noon (09:00 GMT) on Monday in a report from the capital, Damascus.
The clashes between the Druze minority and Bedouin clans, which began on July 13, killed nearly 260 people and threatened to unravel Syria's post-war transition. The violence also displaced 128,571 people, according to the United Nations International Organisation for Migration.
Israel intervened and launched air attacks on Syria's Ministry of Defence buildings in the heart of Damascus. Israeli forces also hit Syrian government forces in Suwayda province, claiming it was protecting the Druze, whom it calls its 'brothers'.
'There are seven districts of Suwayda that are inhabited partly or … mostly by Arab Bedouins, and they are all under threat – or they feel under threat – and some of them are willing to leave [on their own],' he said.
Syrian Interior Minister Ahmad al-Dalati told the SANA news agency that the evacuation process will also allow displaced civilians from Suwayda to return as efforts for a complete ceasefire are under way.
'We have imposed a security cordon in the vicinity of Suwayda to keep it secure and to stop the fighting there,' al-Dalati told the agency. 'This will preserve the path that will lead to reconciliation and stability in the province.'
According to the United Kingdom-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor, the ceasefire agreed on Saturday says the Bedouin fighters will release Druze women they are holding captive and leave the province.
After talks for a captives swap fell through late on Sunday, the observatory and activist groups in Suwayda reported hearing what they said were Israeli air strikes and helicopters over villages where some skirmishes took place between the Bedouins and the Druze. The Israeli military said it was 'not aware' of any overnight strikes in Syria.

Over 1,400 killed in March violence in Syria coast

dpa Damascus A Syrian fact-finding committee on Tuesday confirmed that 1,426 people - mostly civilians, including many Alawites - were killed during a wave of violence in the country's coastal provinces between March 6 and 9. According to committee spokesman Yasser al-Farhan, the clashes began when remnants of armed groups linked to toppled dictator Bashar al-Assad launched coordinated attacks on government forces in Latakia, Tartous and Hama, killing 238 army and security personnel. Among the dead were 90 women, most of them unarmed civilians, the committee said as it presented its findings at a press conference in Damascus. The attackers were described as organized, unlawful groups loyal to the ousted Assad regime, now operating independently and resisting transitional authorities. The new government launched a military operation to quash the violence. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based war monitor, estimated at the time that over 1,600 people, mainly from the Alawite minority, to which Assad belonged, had been killed in the unrest. According to the committee, 550 individuals have been identified as responsible for the attacks and subsequent sectarian violence, though their names remain confidential, with only 31 suspects arrested so far.

Qatar takes part in emergency Arab League meeting on Gaza Strip crisis

QNA Cairo Qatar participated on Tuesday in an extraordinary session of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent representatives, held at the League's headquarters in Cairo, to address the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza Strip and the Israeli government's plans concerning Ibrahimi Mosque and its surroundings in the Old City of Hebron in the West Bank. Qatar's delegation was led by Ambassador of Qatar to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League HE Tariq Ali Faraj Al Ansari. Convened at the request of the State of Palestine, the meeting focused on political and diplomatic action to confront the ongoing siege and starvation tactics imposed on the Palestinian people in Gaza - practices described as tools of genocide - as well as the Israeli government's attempts to strip the Hebron municipality of its authority over the Ibrahimi Mosque and transfer it to an Israeli religious body. In remarks to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Ambassador Al Ansari stated that the meeting came against the backdrop of dangerous escalation by the Israeli occupation in the Palestinian territories. He stressed that one of the core issues discussed was the Israeli attempt to seize administrative control over the Ibrahimi Mosque, which is currently managed by the Hebron municipality and the Palestinian Ministry of Awqaf (Religious Endowments). He stated that this attempt to transfer authority to an Israeli religious entity constitutes a blatant violation of international law, the obligations of the occupying power, and multiple international agreements. Al Ansari emphasised the sensitive nature of the Ibrahimi Mosque issue, noting that such actions fuel hatred and contravene numerous resolutions passed by UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, various regional organisations, and UNESCO, which granted the site global heritage and historical status. He added that the second core issue addressed in the emergency session was the siege and starvation policy being imposed by the Israeli entity on the Palestinian population - measures that have added have reached inhumane and unprecedented levels in modern history. He described these acts as war crimes and part of a deliberate policy of genocide, in violation of the Geneva Conventions and the obligations of the occupying power. Al Ansari said the discussion focused on both of these critical issues with the aim of issuing outcomes that hold the international community accountable and urge the UN Security Council to take action, adding that there is also responsibility on all regional organisations, specialised UN agencies, and key international actors, including the five permanent members of the Security Council. The emergency session also touched on preparations for upcoming Arab dialogues with Japan and Russia, including an anticipated ministerial meeting with Japan as part of Arab Troika, and Arab-Russian summit currently being planned for October 15.

The session also included participation from representatives of government bodies concerned with human rights in the member states, as well as relevant entities within the Arab joint action system. During the session, discussions focused on addressing Israeli violations and racist practices in the occupied Arab territories, as well as issues concerning Arab prisoners and detainees in Israeli prisons, and the remains of Palestinian and Arab martyrs held by the occupation authorities in 'cemeteries of numbers'. The session also approved the theme for the Arab Human Rights Day 2026, which is observed annually on March 16.
