Wells Fargo cuts Lululemon target on margin pressure

Wells Fargo cuts Lululemon target on margin pressure

Yahoo18 hours ago
Investing.com -- Wells Fargo lowered its price target on Lululemon Athletica (NASDAQ:LULU) to $225 from $270 and reiterated an Equal Weight rating, citing persistent weakness in U.S. trends, margin pressures in China, and increasing headwinds from markdowns and tariffs.
The firm said Lululemon's near-term outlook remains difficult, and further estimate cuts are likely.
It reduced its FY2025 EPS forecast to $14.60, near the low end of the company's guidance, and took down FY2026 EPS to $14.90, well below consensus at $15.52. The reduced target is based on a 15x multiple, which Wells described as 'trough-level' but warranted given the risk of 'over-earning' and ongoing execution missteps.
Wells flagged weak North America trends, with 2Q comps likely flat to slightly positive, driven more by clearance activity than underlying demand. Despite some success with new fabrics and styles, the firm said the return of more color has not reignited interest among U.S. consumers.
In China, growth appears to be slowing after a sharp sequential decline last quarter. The firm cut its 3Q/4Q China comp forecasts to +12% and +10%, down from prior expectations of +15% for both quarters. Given China's higher margin profile, any softness there could pose a risk to the company's profitability going forward.
Markdowns have increased in July, and tariff-related costs, particularly from Vietnam, could shave 50-100 basis points from margins in late 2025 into 2026. Wells lowered its 3Q and 4Q gross margin assumptions by 25bps as a result.
Bottom line, the firm sees limited near-term upside as Lululemon navigates softening demand and growing cost pressures.

The Biggest Takeaways From Palantir's Aug. 4 Earnings Report

Key Points Palantir's revenue crossed $1 billion for the first time in company history. Palantir's U.S. commercial segment is its fastest-growing segment. Palantir's stock is trading at historically high levels. 10 stocks we like better than Palantir Technologies › Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) has been the highest-performing stock over the past 12 months, and there isn't even a close second. Its stock is up around 550% -- more than 30 times the S&P 500's gains in that span. Much of Palantir's recent stock price success can be attributed to the artificial intelligence (AI) boom that consumed the stock market and business world over the past couple of years. On Aug. 4, Palantir reported its second-quarter earnings, with the results causing an after-hours 4.5% jump. Below are the biggest takeaways from its earnings report. Palantir's commercial business is picking up steam Palantir is a software company that builds tools that make analyzing and gaining insight from large and complicated data sets much easier. Historically, its software has been geared toward governments, holding large contracts with U.S. government agencies like the CIA and the Department of Defense. However, with the introduction of its Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP), Palantir's commercial business has been growing at a much faster pace and is gaining ground in its government segment. In Q2, Palantir's U.S. commercial revenue grew 93% year over year to $306 million, while its U.S. government revenue grew 53% year over year to $426 million. This performance helped the company achieve its first-ever $1 billion quarter. Palantir is progressively closing larger deals Palantir isn't a consumer-facing business like other big tech companies like Microsoft, Alphabet, and Apple. The focus on institutional clients means it routinely closes multiyear six- and seven-figure deals. Below is how many large-value deals Palantir has closed in Q2 2024, Q1 2025, and Q2 2025. Deal Value Q2 2024 Q1 2025 Q2 2025 At least $1 million 96 139 157 At least $5 million 33 51 66 At least $10 million 27 31 42 Data source: Palantir. The above represent deals from all of Palantir's segments, but it's worth noting that its U.S. commercial deals of at least $1 million doubled from Q2 2024, and U.S. commercial deals of at least $5 million increased fivefold. Being able to close these large deals is critical to Palantir's business because companies don't simply buy the software and put it to use; Palantir's tools are deeply ingrained in these institutions' operations. Palantir is increasing its margins at an impressive pace A company's operating income is its profit from its core operations. In Q2, Palantir's adjusted operating income was $464 million, up from $254 million in Q2 2024. Adjusted operating income typically excludes expenses like one-time charges and stock-based compensation (a huge expense for Palantir), which is why it's higher than Palantir's operating income under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). What's arguably more impressive about Palantir's adjusted operating income growth is that it has been able to expand its margins while simultaneously making investments to grow AIP and its other U.S. operations. Below are its margins from the past five quarters: Q2 2025: 46% Q1 2025: 44% Q4 2024: 45% Q3 2024: 38% Q2 2024: 37% Investors shouldn't ignore the company's high valuation With Palantir's recent stock price explosion has come a valuation that is well beyond "expensive" by even the most relaxed of standards. As of its Q2 earnings report, the stock is trading at a jaw-dropping 287 times its forward earnings. There's expensive, and then there's that. This high valuation doesn't mean that investors should steer clear of the stock, but it does mean the stock has a bright yellow caution sign attached to it. Historically, even companies that traded at high levels -- but much cheaper than Palantir -- have experienced sharp pullbacks. Of course, past events aren't guaranteed to repeat for Palantir, but it's not far-fetched to think the company could fail to meet up to its lofty expectations at any point. Cummins CEO Highlights Secular Growth In Power, Cautions On Truck Market Weakness

Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) stock is trading higher on Tuesday after it reported second-quarter 2025 results that beat Wall Street expectations for both earnings and revenue. Strength in its Power Systems and Distribution segments offset declines in other markets. The company posted diluted earnings per share of $6.43, surpassing the $5.10 analyst estimate. Revenue for the quarter was $8.60 billion, beating the $8.43 billion consensus. Sales fell 2% year-over-year as North America declined 6%, while international sales rose 5% on higher demand in Europe and China. Also Read: Net income attributable to Cummins was $890 million, or 10.3% of sales, up from $726 million, or $5.26 per share, in the prior-year period. EBITDA for the quarter rose to $1.6 billion, or 18.4% of sales, compared with $1.3 billion, or 15.3%, a year ago. Power Systems led segment performance with sales rising 19% to $1.9 billion. North American revenue grew 23%, while international sales rose 16%, driven by demand in data center and mission-critical markets. Distribution revenue increased 7% to $3.0 billion, as North America rose 9% and international sales climbed 4%, largely due to increased demand for power generation products in the U.S. The Engine segment reported $2.9 billion in sales, down 8% year-over-year. The company reaffirmed its commitment to long-term investments under its Destination Zero strategy. Operating cash flow for the quarter was $785 million. Cummins ended the period with $2.32 billion in cash and cash equivalents and $6.81 billion in long-term debt. On July 15, the company increased its quarterly dividend from $1.82 to $2.00 per share, payable Sept. 4, 2025, to shareholders of record as of Aug. 22, marking 16 consecutive years of dividend growth. CMI also introduced the S17 Centum generator set, capable of producing up to 1 megawatt in a compact footprint for use in healthcare, water treatment, and commercial sectors. 'We see a contrast across our markets with robust demand for power generation equipment supported by clear secular drivers, and our more economically sensitive markets, such as truck, where end-user confidence has declined,' commented Chair and CEO Jennifer Rumsey. 'This contrast will become even more pronounced in the second half of the year as North America truck build rates decline sharply, starting in the third quarter,' he added. Amid ongoing economic and regulatory uncertainty, the company said it will not reinstate a full-year revenue or profitability outlook at this time. 'Our diversified portfolio, disciplined cost management and strong execution have enabled us to navigate recent industry challenges. However, persistent economic and regulatory uncertainty continues to impact a number of our key markets and cloud our near-term outlook for both business and market performance,' stated Rumsey. Price Action: At last check Tuesday, CMI shares were trading higher by 6.15% to $383.83.
