Orioles tag Blue Jays for 16 hits in series-opening win
Cedric Mullins and Coby Mayo belted back-to-back home runs and Adley Rutschman had a big game at the plate in his first game off the injured list as the Baltimore Orioles rapped the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 11-4 on Monday night.
Ramon Laureano and Colton Cowser also homered and Jordan Westburg joined Rutschman and Mayo with three hits. Baltimore had 16 hits in the first of four meetings between the teams across three days.
Corbin Martin (1-0) was the winning pitcher with 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief. It marked his second victory in the major leagues, and his first since 2019.
Bo Bichette had four hits, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Nathan Lukes each hit home runs for the Blue Jays, who've lost two games in a row for the first time since the All-Star break.
The Orioles, who've won four of their last five games, tagged Toronto starter Chris Bassitt (11-5) for six runs in 2 1/3 innings. He had gone 4-0 in his first four starts in July.
Baltimore starter Zach Eflin lasted 4 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Lukes and Guerrero Jr. both hit their home runs in the third inning.
Rutschman's two-run double in the bottom of the third inning broke a tie to put Baltimore up 5-3. Laureano singled in the next run.
Laureano's 15th homer of the season was a two-run shot in the fifth for a 9-4 advantage. Mullins also has 15 long balls this year. Ryan O'Hearn and Mullins also had two hits.
Baltimore relievers blanked the Blue Jays across the last five innings.
The series pits the AL East Division-leading Blue Jays against the last-place Orioles. The teams meet in a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday.

The Blue Jays wasted a solid six-inning effort from Bassitt with their sixth loss in eight games, a 7-4 defeat in 10 innings to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. Toronto (65-48) still leads the American League East by three games over the Boston Red Sox, an advantage built by a 49-28 record since May 8, the best run by an AL team during that stretch. Bassitt believes his club has suffered a letdown after emerging from the all-star break by winning two of three from the rival New York Yankees and three of four from the Detroit Tigers, who at the time had Major League Baseball's best record. 'Then I thought we just laid an egg in Baltimore, where we ran into a super-hot Baltimore offence, and we just weren't ready for it,' said Bassitt of the Orioles winning three times in the four-game series. 'Unfortunately, it happens.' The Royals arrived in Toronto having won seven of their last 10. The rubber-match win on Sunday, before 41,461 at Rogers Centre, meant the Blue Jays dropped back-to-back series for the first time since mid-May. 'You just take your licks,' Bassitt said. 'It's going to happen through the year. 'It's just getting back to who we are as a team, good pitching from the starters to the bullpen and just grind out at-bats.' There was also the trade deadline on Thursday. It yielded the Blue Jays three new pitchers and first baseman Ty France. France did not play in the series finale against the Royals. But the three pitchers performed on Sunday to mixed reviews. Reliever Louis Varland gave up the tying run in the eighth inning, and Seranthony Dominguez was hammered for five more in the 10th. Meanwhile, in his first rehab start for triple-A Buffalo, Shane Bieber was encouraging. He tossed 62 pitches in five innings, surrendering two runs, including a homer, on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Toronto manager John Schneider would like to keep Bieber with five days of rest between starts, but his next outing will not be set in stone until the Blue Jays staff sees how he feels after this latest start. 'I think hearing his comments after the game are more encouraging,' Schneider said. The 30-year-old Bieber, who underwent Tommy John surgery on April 12, 2024, reported he felt 'great' and 'excited' about where he's at in the recovery process. 'We're taking it a start at a time,' Schneider said. 'But I think from the stuff, the number of pitches, the (velocity), it's really encouraging.' Bieber sat beside Bassitt in the Blue Jays' dugout on Saturday. Part of their conversation was some sage advice on the stages of recovery after Tommy John surgery. Bassitt underwent the procedure on his right arm in May 2016. 'Most of it's private,' said Bassitt, when asked about what they talked about. 'From a stance of what I can talk about, it was just how his (Tommy John) rehab was going. 'I've been through it. So just understanding what he's going through, how he's feeling, the bad and good feelings of the process and things like that. I was wondering where he was at.' Royals score 5 runs in 10th, overwhelm Blue Jays 7-4
TORONTO (AP) — Kyle Isbel hit an RBI double in the 10th inning, and the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-4 on Sunday. Vinnie Pasquantino hit a tying single with two out in the eighth, and Kansas City scored five in the 10th while taking two of three from the AL East-leading Blue Jays. The Royals are 24-12 in series finales, winning their past nine. Hunter Harvey (1-0) pitched one inning for the win as Kansas City returned to .500 at 56-56. Nathan Lukes and Addison Barger cut into Kansas City's lead with RBI singles in the bottom of the 10th, but Toronto (65-48) lost a home series for the first time since losing two of three to the White Sox from June 20-22. Isbel drove in the winning run with a double down the line against Seranthony Domínguez (2-4). Jonathan India walked and Bobby Witt Jr. was hit by a pitch before Tyler Tolbert added a two-run single. Horwitz hit a two-run homer in the second inning, added a three-run shot in the sixth and knocked in his sixth run with a ground out in the eighth. The Pirates' 27-year-old leadoff hitter has five homers and 31 RBIs in 61 games this season. MARINERS 5, RANGERS 4 SEATTLE (AP) — Julio Rodriguez homered to become the first player in major league history with 20 or more home runs and 20 or more stolen bases in each of his first four seasons, and Seattle beat Texas. Rodriguez hit a two-run shot in the third inning — his 100th career homer — and the slugging and speedy center fielder also added his 21st stolen base of the season after singling in the fifth inning. Jorge Polanco added a solo shot in the second and shortstop J.P. Crawford smacked a two-run blast in the fourth against Rangers starter Jacob deGrom (10-4), who became the fastest pitcher in major league history to reach 1,800 career strikeouts by games and innings on Sunday. Cease (4-10) struck out nine with a walk as the Padres (62-50) won for the seventh time in eight games and moved three games behind the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (65-47). PHILLIES 2, TIGERS 0 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Cristopher Sánchez pitched eight sparkling innings, Kyle Schwarber hit his 38th homer and Philadelphia beat Detroit. Philadelphia took two of three in the weekend series to move back into first place in the NL East, a half-game better than the New York Mets. Sánchez (10-3) surrendered five hits, struck out six and walked one. He allowed only one baserunner to reach third. Jhoan Duran handled the ninth for his second save with the Phillies and No. 18 overall.
