EXCLUSIVE I bought an old Victorian five-bedroom home for $305K... but I soon discovered its dark history

Daily Maila day ago
A woman who bought an old Victorian five-bedroom home for $305,000 was left shocked after she discovered a dark twist about the abode.
Ashley Berken, 39, from Wisconsin, and her wife, Beth, were in the midst of looking for a new house for themselves and their four children last year, when they came across a listing that seemed too good to be true.
The stunning, 4,500-square-foot house was the perfect size for the family-of-six and was in their budget.
But when Ashley went to go and view the home, she noticed something a little strange about the estate that led to her making a surprising discovery about its past.
It turns out, it was a former funeral home, which meant hoards of dead bodies had come through it.
'It actually wasn't on the listing,' Ashley explained to the Daily Mail during a recent chat.
'We grew suspicious during the tour when we saw ramps in the garage that went both upstairs and down to the basement.
'We figured those might have been used to move bodies. Afterwards, I dug around on a local historical Facebook page, found old photos and stories, and that confirmed it for me.'
It turns out, it was a former funeral home, which meant hoards of dead bodies had come through it
While some might have been put off by the idea of the abode being a former funeral home, it was the opposite for Ashley.
In fact, the mother-of-four explained that she's a big fan of the film My Girl, so it drew her to the house even more.
My Girl is a 1991 flick that follows a young girl who lives in a funeral home with her single dad.
'Honestly, it made me want it even more - it gave me all the My Girl vibes and really fit my spooky-loving heart,' she confessed. 'It sealed the deal.'
They ultimately purchased the home in October 2024 for just over $300,000.
While she was 'worried' about telling her kids, aged nine to 13, about the home's former use, she said they 'truly couldn't have cared less.'
'They were just thrilled that we quadrupled our living space,' she explained.
And she insisted that knowing that dead bodies were worked on in the home doesn't make her uncomfortable in the slightest.
'What matters more to me is knowing how much love has been shared here over the years, how many bonds were made and lives intertwined. That's the best feeling,' she added.
As for whether or not anything 'creepy' has occurred in the house since moving in, she joked, 'Our house is always such a whirlwind of chaos that I probably wouldn't notice.
'Though, now that you ask, we have had a giant wooden mancala board disappear since Christmas, and I'm beginning to think it actually vanished into thin air.'
While the property doesn't act as a funeral home anymore, it still has traces of its ominous past.
It has a casket showroom and an embalming room, the latter of which still has the original slop sink.
'There's also this stunning 10-foot built-in pier mirror that some people swear is a portal to the spirit world,' Ashley dished. 'I just think it's a one-of-a-kind piece.
'The grand foyer has brass light fixture statues, and there are around half a dozen unique hardwood floor patterns throughout the house, with intricate parquet designs you just don't see anymore. It's like every room has its own story.'
She explained that she plans to turn the embalming room into a space for 'potting plants and growing life.'
But she added that she 'doesn't want to change too much' because she feels what makes the home truly special is its past.
'I don't want to change too much - more just updates, deep cleans, and giving it some love,' she dished.
'I feel like spending Zen time honoring the space with new life is, quite honestly, the best way to clean up the space.'
Ashley has been sharing videos of what it's like to live in a funeral home to TikTok, where they have gone viral.
She never expected so many people to be intrigued by the home, but she's honored by all the interest.
'I quickly realized there are so many millennials who also dreamed of living in a funeral home,' she said.
'It's been amazing to celebrate this kind of weird little win with people who never thought it could happen either.'

Caprice, 53, admits she was 'unbearable' and totally 'out of control' at the height of her fame as she reflects on her wild career

Supermodel Caprice Bourret has admitted she was 'unbearable' at the height of her fame and was totally 'out of control' as she reflected on her wild career. The American star, 53, stormed the fashion world during the 1990s appearing on countless magazine covers including Vogue, Sports Illustrated and Maxim. But in a new interview, Caprice has revealed that she became so big headed that she even turned down going out for lunch with Cindy Crawford and playing the lead in Baywatch. Speaking to Radio One DJ Charlie Hedges on My Wardrobe Malfunction, the mother-of-two, who has given up alcohol, said: 'I believed my own bulls***. I believed my own hype. How could you not? 'I was unbearable. I would go to a nightclub and of course they were so nice all the time. They would give me like a free table and give me alcohol and yada, yada, yada…I would sit at my table, and I would get the bouncer. 'I'd say: 'I want that guy, that guy, that guy, and that guy. Can you get them to come up to my table?' I mean, how embarrassing is that? 'And they used to come to my table and sometimes I would make out with one, and I don't know, maybe make out with another one…It was out of control, it was crazy, you know? It was completely mental.' Caprice now lives a quieter lifestyle with partner Ty and 11-year-old sons Jett and Dax in a Grade II listed house in Notting Hill. Trying to break away from being the pretty face to become a credible actress, the runway star continued: 'I was offered the lead in Baywatch and I thought: 'I'm much bigger than that', so I turned that down. 'I was always known as the babe and I just thought: 'I don't wanna be the babe anymore. I want to be a credible actress.' 'How stupid is that? …And I remember one time, Cindy's PR had called up my PR and wanted to go out to lunch and then take pictures and yada, yada. And I just said: 'No, Cindy's using me for publicity.' And I didn't go. 'My agent said 'Are you sure you want to do this? It is Cindy Crawford.' I said 'Yeah, she's trying to get publicity off of me.' That's crazy.' Caprice grew up in Hacienda Heights, in Los Angeles with her interior designer mother Valerie, and father Dale, an estate agent, who died in 2016. She left home at 17 and moved to New York where she began her modelling career. She shot to fame in 1996 after appearing on the National TV Awards in a barely-there black Versace lace dress. 'I was on the cover of every single newspaper alive the next day and that's how it all started,' she said. And Caprice recently proved she's still got it at 53 as she rocked a bikini while starring in a sizzling new shoot. The model has thrown it back to her lads' mags heyday, during which she starred on 250 covers, with a new shoot for Loaded. The blonde stunner wows in a series of barely-there bikinis, pulling out her best poses and pouts for the camera in an Ibiza resort. The model has revealed she's had to work for her jaw-dropping physique, admitting she has been on a strict diet and fitness regime for decades. 'Honestly, it's discipline,' she confessed. 'I play a lot of tennis and I go running when I can. I try to stay active most days, even if it's just a long walk.' Her biggest hack though is cutting out carbs, revealing how she recently 'eliminated carbs and lost 20 pounds'. 'The first month was rough, but now it's second nature. I feel stronger, I sleep better, and I've got so much more energy—it's been a total game-changer'. The California-born star has also bought in to the wellness hype, championed by the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, as she gushed: 'I'm a big believer in overall wellness too. I start every morning with a smoothie and a ridiculous number of supplements. Wellness is part of my life.' Whilst Caprice is enjoying the trip down memory lane with her new bikini shoot, she has plenty of other ventures that have boosted her bank balance and kept her busy in recent years. She made her first million at 25 and after a wise property investment in Surrey, has continued to build her property portfolio alongside her booming lingerie business which is said to have bagged her £24million. Her childhood dream though was to act and after realising she wasn't getting cast in lead roles, she simply decided to make her own movies, launching her own film company, JJLove Productions 'named after my boys Jett and Jax.' She shoots multiple films a year, with her latest movie, A Scottish Christmas Secret, hitting Channel 5 later this year. She has also moved on from her reality TV years, which saw her appear on everything from Celebrity Big Brother to Celebs On The Farm. She previously admitted she would not have had the guts to start making movies and pursue new business ventures without the courage gained from surviving a brain tumour. Caprice was training for the winter sports reality show The Jump in 2017 when a scan revealed the terrible news. She later underwent an operation which involved surgeons taking off part of her skull to remove the tumour. The star is now a proud patron for Brain Tumour Research.
