Two suspected militants belonging to Hasm movement killed by Egyptian forces in shootout
The Interior Ministry said the suspected militants belonged to the Hasm movement, which is affiliated with the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. Hasm is designed as a terrorist group by the United States.
A bystander also was killed and an officer wounded in the exchange of fire between the militants and security forces in Giza's densely populated neighborhood of Bolaq el-Dakrour, the ministry said in a statement.
According to the ministry, the militants were planning to carry out attacks in Egypt. Security forces in recent years have crushed an extremist insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula, which at times spilled over into other parts of the country.

QUETTA: At least eight Pakistani paramilitary troops and seven militants were killed in separate clashes in the country's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and southwestern Balochistan provinces, officials said on Monday. A high-value Daesh militant, who was under custody for the kidnapping and murder of a young boy, was killed during a police 'encounter' with his accomplices, who attempted to free him while he was being taken for the identification of a Daesh hideout in Balochistan's Mastung district, according to a CTD statement. The suspect's accomplices present inside opened heavy fire on the CTD team, resulting in a fierce exchange that resulted in the killing of the suspect, Hasham, by 'his group's fire,' while two militants were also neutralized on the spot, the CTD said. The claim could not be independently verified. 'All three killed suspects were linked to Daesh (ISKP) and were planning future acts of terror. The group was also involved in targeted killings and extortion networks, using child abductions to fund militant operations,' the CTD said in a statement. Muhammad Musawir Khan Kakar, a third-grade student, was kidnapped from a school van by unidentified armed men while on his way to school in Quetta on Nov. 15, 2024, according to his family and police. His body was found in Mastung's Dasht area on June 23. Separately, eight Pakistani paramilitary troops and four militants were killed in a clash in KP's Orakzai district that borders Afghanistan, AFP news agency reported, citing local officials. 'Armed terrorists attacked a Frontier Corps (FC) convoy with heavy weapons... The fighting continued for several hours,' the news agency quoted a senior local security official as saying. 'Eight FC personnel were killed, and 11 were injured.' Three injured soldiers are in critical condition, while the clash also killed four militants, he added. 'Armed terrorists attacked a Frontier Corps (FC) convoy with heavy weapons... The fighting continued for several hours,' a senior local security official told AFP. 'Eight FC personnel were killed, and 11 were injured,' he said. Three injured soldiers are in critical condition, while the clash also killed four militants, he added. A senior administration official in the area confirmed the details to AFP. The clash, which lasted for several hours, took place in Daburi, Orakzai district, near the Afghan border. Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in violence in its regions bordering Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021. Islamabad accuses its western neighbor of allowing its soil to be used for attacks against Pakistan — a claim the Taliban denies. More than 320 people, mostly security personnel, have been killed in attacks since the start of the year by armed groups fighting in both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, according to an AFP tally.

Palestine Action's co-founder asks UK court to overturn terror group ban
LONDON: The co-founder of a pro-Palestinian campaign group sought on Monday to challenge the British government's decision to ban the group under anti-terrorism laws, a move her lawyers said had 'the hallmarks of an authoritarian and blatant abuse of power.' Huda Ammori, who helped found Palestine Action in 2020, is asking London's High Court to give the go-ahead for a full challenge to the group's proscription, which was made on the grounds it committed or participated in acts of terrorism. Earlier this month, the High Court refused Ammori's application to pause the ban and, following an unsuccessful last-ditch appeal, Palestine Action's proscription came into effect just after midnight on July 5. Proscription makes it a crime to be a member of the group, carrying a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Ammori's lawyer Raza Husain said Palestine Action is the first direct action group to be banned as a terror group, a move he argued was inconsistent with 'the honorable history of civil disobedience on conscientious grounds in our country.' Dozens have been arrested for holding placards purportedly supporting the group since the ban and Ammori's lawyers say protesters expressing support for the Palestinian cause have also been subject to increased scrutiny from police officers. Britain's interior minister Yvette Cooper, however, has said violence and criminal damage have no place in legitimate protest and that Palestine Action's activities – including breaking into a military base and damaging two planes – justify proscription. Palestine Action has increasingly targeted Israel-linked companies in Britain, often spraying red paint, blocking entrances or damaging equipment. The group accuses the British government of complicity in what it says are Israeli war crimes in its ongoing bombardment of Gaza. Israel has repeatedly denied committing abuses in its war in Gaza, which began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.
