PM Modi in Brazil: Day 2 of Brics Summit
The second day of the Brics Summit is underway in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attending the event and is scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines.
Notably, Brics, originally made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has now grown to ten members after five new countries joined the grouping.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are not attending in person. Russia is being represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, while Premier Li Qiang is attending on behalf of China.
India is likely to use the opportunity to seek backing from the bloc on its stance against cross-border terrorism, especially after last month's tensions with Pakistan, according to reports.
Netanyahu to meet Trump in US
US President Donald Trump is expected to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for talks at the White House today.
Ahead of a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said the visit would also include talks with key officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, West Asian envoy Steve Witkoff, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
This will be Netanyahu's third trip to the White House since Trump returned to office in January.

The visit follows US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, as Washington stepped into the conflict between Israel and Iran.
After helping negotiate a ceasefire, Trump is now focusing on efforts to end the fighting between Israel and Hamas.
Mahatma Gandhi portrait auction
A rare portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the few he posed for while seated, is set to be auctioned in London starting today.
The oil painting, made in 1931, will be on sale at Bonhams from today to July 15. It is expected to fetch between £50,000 and £70,000 (around Rs 58 lakh to Rs 81 lakh), as per reports.
A label on the back shows the painting was restored in 1974 by the Lyman Allyn Museum Conservation Laboratory.
It was last shown publicly in London in November 1931.
The only other known public display was in 1978, during an exhibition of Clare Leighton's work at the Boston Public Library.
Palaniswami to begin tour of Tamil Nadu
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami will begin his state tour of Tamil Nadu from Coimbatore today, ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
The party has also planned a protest today in Kumbakonam, alleging poor governance by the municipal corporation.
The campaign, named 'Makkalai Kappom; Thamizhagathai Meetpom' (Let us protect the people and reclaim Tamil Nadu), will cover all 234 Assembly constituencies.

Palaniswami has been sharply criticising the ruling government, especially on issues related to law and order.
Meanwhile, DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin has been visiting several districts to launch new projects and conduct roadshows. TVK President and actor Vijay is also preparing to start his own state tour in August.

Crackdown against Birkenstock ‘fakes': Delhi HC orders factory inspections in India after footwear brand files lawsuit
Officers, upon the Delhi High Court order, recently inspected small-scale factories in Delhi and Agra to seize suspected counterfeit Birkenstock sandals. The intellectual property enforcement action followed a lawsuit filed by the German footwear brand in the high court, reported news agency Reuters. Birkenstock's complaint stated that an internal investigation had found lookalike products being manufactured in rural areas around Agra and sold locally as well as exported abroad. In May, Birkenstock filed an infringement lawsuit in the Delhi HC against four footwear traders, four factories, and two unnamed individuals. On May 26, Justice Saurabh Banerjee of the Delhi High Court issued a confidential order, later made public on the court's website, authorising swift legal action. The judge appointed 10 local lawyers as court commissioners to visit the suspect locations. They were directed to 'seize, pack and seal the infringing products.' The order also included photographs submitted by Birkenstock showing alleged counterfeit sandals and packaging carrying its branding. 'There is all likelihood of the public getting deceived,' Justice Banerjee wrote in his order. 'The differences, hardly if any, are not something which can be discernable to the naked eyes.' He noted that the samples 'seem like a cheap knock off' of genuine Birkenstock footwear. The inspections have since been completed, and confidential reports were submitted to the judge, said three people familiar with the matter, as per Reuters. The next hearing is scheduled for October 6. The case adds to a growing list of high-profile intellectual property battles in India's footwear sector. Earlier this month, Crocs secured the court's nod to proceed with a long-pending infringement case. Meanwhile, Prada came under criticism for promoting sandals similar to Indian ethnic footwear without initially crediting the country's cultural contribution. Earlier this year, the Birkenstock faced a legal setback in Germany when a court ruled that its sandals did not qualify as art and were therefore not protected by copyright.

Congress backs PM Modi's BRICS stand, vows firm fight against terrorism
New Delhi: Backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's firm stance on terrorism at the BRICS Summit, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari on Monday expressed his complete faith that India will fight terrorism with full resolve and determination. His remarks came in response to PM Modi's statement at the global summit, where he called terrorism 'the most serious challenge facing humanity' and emphasised that condemning terrorism must be a matter of principle, not convenience. Speaking to IANS, Pramod Tiwari supported the Prime Minister, stating, 'At the BRICS Summit, voices should have been more vocal against terrorism. The platform should also raise social, economic, and global concerns of its member nations. India has consistently spoken for global peace and justice. "I have full faith that our country will fight terrorism with unwavering determination. I wish those responsible for the recent attack in Pahalgam had been caught — it would have revealed who trained and supported them. Such information is crucial and would have commanded greater respect globally.' Tiwari also took a swipe at US President Donald Trump, who recently lashed out at the BRICS alliance and warned of an 'additional 10 per cent tariff' on countries aligning with what he termed 'anti-American policies.' 'BRICS is for protecting nations who are in it. President Trump had previously issued similar warnings during his visit to India. At that time, Prime Minister Modi should not have laughed or responded lightly. He should have stood firm and reminded Trump that BRICS works on its own principles and is committed to its founding objectives,' said Tiwari. The Congress leader criticised the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. On Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stated that extensive consultations had been held with political parties and acknowledged that 'no one was satisfied' with the current status of the electoral rolls. Reacting to the development, Tiwari said, 'We are not satisfied with the Election Commission of India's response. The documents required for voter list revision are unnecessarily complicated and impractical. If the process is designed to make it difficult for traditional voters who are against the BJP, Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes, and minority voters, to remain on the rolls, then this raises serious questions about the Election Commission's intent. Mocking the move, Tiwari remarked, 'The NDA in Bihar is a sinking ship. Chirag Paswan, despite being the son of a respected leader like Ram Vilas Paswan, is trying to stay afloat in turbulent political waters. If he's contesting all 243 seats, it means internal cracks have widened and many alliance members are already looking for the exit door ahead of elections.' He continued, 'It's clear that NDA leaders are aware they are going to lose many seats. Their desperation is evident. While they are forming the central government, they are losing their grip on the state. This creates confusion among their own allies.' In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, Chirag Paswan's LJP had contested 137 seats but managed to win only one, Matihani. Despite this, Chirag currently holds a Lok Sabha seat and serves as a Cabinet Minister in the BJP-led central government, which includes JD(U) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) as key allies.

Vijay's TVK Rules Out Alliance with BJP, DMK for 2026
Published : Jul 07, 2025 14:10 IST - 5 MINS READ The line-up of alliances for the 2026 Assembly election in Tamil Nadu appears to be nearly complete with actor Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), announcing that it will have no truck with the 'ideological enemy,' the BJP, or the 'political enemy,' the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has aligned with the BJP for the election, which rules out TVK joining hands with the AIADMK. TVK itself ensured that the AIADMK will not able to have any truck with it by announcing that Vijay will be the chief ministerial candidate. Speaking to Frontline recently, K.G. Arunraj, TVK's general secretary (propaganda and policy), had said: 'TVK does not need any tie-up with any party. Vijay is a phenomenon unlike anything Tamil Nadu politics has seen before. But we are still open to anyone who wants to be part of our front. We will welcome them.' Similar sentiments were expressed by senior leaders of the party in separate conversations with this correspondent. On the stage of an executive committee meeting on July 4, Vijay himself clarified, yet again, that his party does not need any of the established parties. 'TVK is not DMK or AIADMK to ally with the BJP for selfish political gains. If we form an alliance, it will always be against both the DMK and the BJP,' he thundered to the loud acceptance of the boisterous and partisan gathering of executive committee members, who are yet to transition from a fan club into a political party cadre. One is led by the ruling DMK and includes the Congress, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK). This alliance, which also includes a few smaller sub-regional parties, has stayed intact since the 2019 Lok Sabha election. The AIADMK-led front has the BJP as the lead partner, although the national party's strength in the State is minuscule. A clutch of one-man parties, such as the ones run by John Pandian, A.C. Shanmugham, and Pari Vendhar, are also part of this alliance. But none of these parties have any heft and are largely in the front for the leaders' personal reasons and because the BJP is part of it. The two sub-regional parties that the front wants in its fold are the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK). Miffed over AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami not offering the DMDK a Rajya Sabha, party leader Premalatha announced that the party would make an announcement on alliances in January 2026. 'There is no need to hastily join anyone,' she told mediapersons, in response to a question, adding that any front that respects the DMDK's contribution will be the party's preferred alliance partner. PMK's internal troubles The PMK is in the middle of a huge internal dispute between founder and and current president S. Ramadoss and his son, Anbumani. Party sources said that Anbumani was keen on joining hands with the BJP but Ramadoss would have none of it. However, political analysts in the State insist that both father and son are essentially saying the same thing: Ramadoss is comfortable with an alliance with the AIADMK and the son wants to tie up with the BJP. Since both are in the same alliance, there should not be a problem. But the issue has now been sucked into family war turf. Every day there are expulsions and counter expulsions. For instance, on July 5, Ramadoss threw Anbumani out of an executive body, only for Anbumani's advisor Arul Rathinam to hit out, claiming that the expulsion had no effect because Ramadoss had no powers to do so. Anbumani is on record saying that he is now president and cannot be removed by anyone barring the elected general council. Anbumani has packed this forum with his supporters. There have been several mediation efforts but given the complex situation in the PMK, no such ceasefire talks have been effective so far. The PMK is still quite the force in some northern Tamil Nadu constituencies where it can be the deciding factor. This is why Palaniswami called all like-minded parties to join hands against the DMK. 'It is our objective that all like-minded parties should come together and contest the election,' Palaniswami told mediapersons on July 5. Asked if he will join hands with TVK, he said: 'We will be happy to align with those who want to remove the DMK government.' 'The Stalin government has not fulfilled a majority of the promises it made ahead of the [2021] election. The people of Tamil Nadu are angry because of this,' he said in an open letter to his party members. The BJP is slated to begin its 2026 election campaign with a zonal conference in Tirunelveli on August 17. The party has decided to organise six more such conferences ahead of the election. Apart from strengthening the grass-roots party structure, the conferences will showcase the achievements of 11 years of BJP rule at the Centre. In effect, political parties in the State have begun preparing for the 2026 election way ahead of time. Before the 2021 election, preparations were muted until about six months before the election. This time, election season has begun about 10 months ahead.
