Cody Gakpo reveals Liverpool players' gesture to Diogo Jota family after his tragic death

Liverpool have still been trying to come to terms with Diogo Jota's tragic passing as a squad and Cody Gakpo has revealed how the team been trying to reach out to his family as much as possible
Liverpool star Cody Gakpo has paid tribute to "outstanding" and "wonderful" former team-mate Diogo Jota after his tragic death aged just 28 last month as he revealed how Reds stars are still reaching out to his family.

The club were left in mourning when it was revealed Jota had tragically died along with brother Andre following a car crash in Portugal, when his Lamborghini suffered a tire blowout while overtaking before leaving the road and bursting into flames.

His passing stunned the football world as figures from across the sport made tributes. A majority of the Liverpool squad flew out to Portugal to attend his funeral and show their respect to his family, including wife Rute Cardoso and their three young children.

Gakpo showed his respect towards Jota after performing his trademark celebration after scoring in a friendly against Preston, their first game back since the player's death. He has now opened up on team's struggles to come to terms with the news and the squad's desire to help his family.
"It's been very difficult, for obvious reasons," Gakpo told the Liverpool Echo. "I think a lot of us were still on vacation when the situation happened and we came together as a team and as a club as soon as possible.
"We tried to be there as much as we could at that moment for the family and together as a team to help wherever we could. We still try to do that and everyone is still busy a bit more behind the scenes than what is in the news, to reach out and help as much as possible.
"The family of Diogo, hopefully, felt the love we have for them and for Diogo and his brother. But yeah, you could see how we try to act as a club and a team, the supporters as well, the whole city, every football fan, that we as Liverpool try to be a family."
Liverpool have tried to do their part by retiring his No 20 shirt, commissioning a sculpture of Jota while the players have made a "Forever 20" emblem that they will wear on their Adidas shirts this season.

And Gakpo said it was important to the team to remember his legacy as a human being - not just as a player - and how he touched all their lives.
"I think [the emblem] is the least we can do," he added. "Obviously him, as a player, he was an outstanding player but him as a person was even more wonderful. Like he was such a great person with everyone, everyone loved him and that is also what you saw with how everyone reacted.
"So yeah, I think it was more to remember who he was to us. Not as a player - because a player I think we can see the highlights on YouTube but more as the person he was. He will be missed this season but he will be missed by us, this club, this team and his family, for the rest of our lives."

Liverpool have been trying to move on as a squad as they prepare to defend their Premier League title this season, with their opener coming up soon against Bournemouth at home on August 15.
First, they face Athletic Bilbao in a friendly before a Community Shield against Palace and more tributes to Jota are expected.

Luis Diaz to privately message ex-Everton star who raised major Bayern concerns

Luis Diaz moved to Bayern Munich after spending three-and-a-half years at Liverpool, and a former Everton star who also played at the Allianz Arena made his feelings clear on the transfer Luis Diaz plans to reach out to James Rodriguez, following the former Everton player's endorsement of his move from Liverpool to Bayern Munich. The 28-year-old recently completed a £65.5million transfer to the German giants after spending three-and-a-half years at Anfield. ‌ During his time with the Reds, Diaz clinched a full set of domestic honours that included two EFL Cup, an FA Cup and the Premier League title last season. Now seeking a fresh challenge, he is gearing up for his debut season in Germany, tracing the path of Rodriguez who admits he didn't always enjoy his two-season loan stint in Bavaria between 2017 and 2019. ‌ Rodriguez, now 34 and playing for Club Leon in Mexico, voiced his support for Diaz's decision to swap Merseyside for Munich. And Diaz, who is only the third Colombian to play for Bayern, following Rodriguez and Adolfo Valencia, said that he will reach out to his more senior compatriot. ‌ "About James, I haven't spoken much with him," Diaz told local German media. "Maybe I'll write to him to see what advice he has for me about the city, the team and everything else. But so far I haven't had the chance to talk to him." Rodriguez is confident Diaz will impress in the Bundesliga and help continue their dominance of German football. Speaking to LaBolaSports after his team's 2-0 defeat to New York City FC in the Leagues Cup, he said: "I think Lucho made the right choice. Bayern signed a great player, and Lucho is made for big teams. It's a great club, and he'll help them a lot." Rodriguez's loan spell at Bayern did deliver three major trophies, including two Bundesliga crowns, but he confessed he was never settled at the club owing to struggles with the language and the harsh climate. "First, the cold," he said on Daniel Habif's podcast in 2020. "Then, they are very cold people, although I received spectacular treatment at the club, they liked me a lot. Living there is not easy; it's very cold, -20 degrees. There were days when I would go to work at 9am, start up the car, and it would be -28 degrees. "I'd say, 'What am I doing here? What am I doing here with -28 degrees?' Munich is a city with a very high quality of life, but I couldn't feel comfortable... the (German) language was very hard for me; I didn't have any desire to learn it. ‌ "I told my (German) teacher in those first four months, 'Look, I'm not going to waste your time and I'm not going to waste mine. I don't want to, I don't want to, I don't want to. I don't want a language that doesn't make me want to learn it; I just didn't want to.'" James returned to Madrid in 2019 but only made a mere 14 appearances in what turned out to be his final season in Spain, where he won eight honours, including two La Liga titles and two Champions League titles. The chance to reunite with Carlo Ancelotti led the Colombian to sign for Everton, albeit for just one season, before he left for the Qatar Stars League with Al-Rayyan.

Manchester United fans announce opening day protest against Jim Ratcliffe

A Manchester United supporters' group has announced a fresh protest against the Glazer family and, for the first time, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, ahead of their Premier League opener against Arsenal. The 1958, a fan collective, will march to Old Trafford on 17 August. They will carry banners reading 'Jim Can't Fix This'. Ratcliffe, who acquired a 28.94 per cent stake and took day-to-day operational control from the Glazers in February 2024, has overseen wide, often unpopular, changes. The group has previously . 'It's a new season but the same old ownership issues. Twenty years of the Glazers and their debt mountain is 20 years too long. Enough is enough,' a spokesman for The 1958 said. 'We won't allow some natural optimism and a couple of shiny new signings to deflect from the bigger off-field picture. 'Jim Ratcliffe chose to get into bed with the Glazers and in our opinion is helping keep them in charge.' The spokesman said Ratcliffe had once been seen as 'a possible saviour, a beacon of hope', but had since been revealed as 'complicit in the ongoing erosion of everything that makes our club what it is'. 'This is no longer just about ownership; this is about survival – the survival of our identity, our community, and our values.' Ratcliffe suggested in March that he would walk away from United if he ever suffered abuse on the level of that directed at the Glazer family. 'It can be unpleasant,' Ratcliffe said in the Times. 'And I've probably failed on the having fun front. 'I can put up with it for a while. I don't mind being unpopular because I get that nobody likes seeing Manchester United down where they are, and nobody likes the decisions we're having to make. 'Eventually, if it reached the extent that the Glazer family have been abused, then I'd have to say, 'look, that's enough guys, let somebody else do this'.' United finished 15th in the Premier League last season – their lowest top-flight finish since 1974 – and missed out on European qualification after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.

Man Utd fans plan first protest against Sir Jim Ratcliffe as they slam 'devil in disguise'

Manchester United supporters are still fuming over the club's plight and have staged protests accusing the ownership of robbing its "history, dignity and integrity" after a disastrous season led to a 15th placed finish Manchester United fans are planning to stage a protest against Sir Jim Ratcliffe's running of the club for the first time ahead of their Premier League season opener against Arsenal this month. ‌ Ratcliffe has come under fire from a huge section of supporters over his decision-making and handling of the club since his £1.25bn investment in the club last year - quickly taking control of United's football operations. ‌ But United have had a disastrous couple of years since he joined the club, which have seen United finish seventh in the Premier League in 2023-24 before a 15th-placed finish last season. The club have also been hit by financial difficulties, which has impacted their spending in this window. ‌ Ratcliffe has embarked on a brutal cost-cutting regime at Old Trafford, with ticket prices hiked and free lunches for staff in the canteen scrapped too. Meanwhile, Joel and Avram Glazer continue to own the club in the background despite mounting calls for the Americans to leave. The 1958 supporters' group have previously staged a number of demonstrations against the club's ownership, including before the final game of the season against Aston Villa - as they accused United of stealing their "history, dignity and integrity". They have now announced their next move in a bid to make their voices heard. The group will lead a protest outside Old Trafford before the team faces the Gunners on August 17. Protesters will hold up banners in opposition to both Ratcliffe and the Glazers presence at the club, with the signs reading: "Jim can't fix this". ‌ A spokesman for The 1958 said: 'It's a new season but the same old ownership issues. Twenty years of the Glazers and their debt mountain is 20 years too long. Enough is enough. "We won't allow some natural optimism and a couple of shiny new signings to deflect from the bigger off-field picture. Jim Ratcliffe chose to get into bed with the Glazers and in our opinion is helping keep them in charge. "So on 17th August, we protest not just against the Glazers, but now also against Jim Ratcliffe – a man once seen by many, including ourselves, as a possible saviour, a beacon of hope but now revealed as complicit in the ongoing erosion of everything that makes our club what it is. ‌ "Jim Ratcliffe, you have chosen your side and it is not ours. You now stand shoulder to shoulder with the Glazers. The mask has slipped. You are no saviour. You're like a (red) devil in disguise." Ratcliffe previously admitted he could leave the club if he became as unpopular as the Americans, saying: "Eventually, if it reached the extent that the Glazer family have been abused, then I'd have to say, 'look, that's enough guys, let somebody else do this'."
