KOTA KINABALU, June 11 — The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (Sabah) seized RM16.6 million worth of smuggled goods in a series of raids at Sepanggar Port here last month.
Sabah Customs Department Assistant Director General Siti Mang yesterday said the items seized between May 14 and 29 included liquor, frozen chicken and rice.
In the first case, Customs officers inspected 33 containers and discovered 659,856 litres of various types of liquor worth RM3.97 million. The estimated duties and taxes amounted to RM11.86 million.
In a second raid on May 16, officers inspected a container carrying 28 tonnes of frozen chicken valued at RM233,400. The duties and taxes were estimated at RM93,360. None of the frozen chicken products had a valid import permit.
On May 29, officers uncovered 150 tonnes of fragrant and glutinous rice worth RM356,250, with duties and taxes totaling RM142,500.
All cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967.
Siti said smuggling activities not only cause significant revenue loss but also pose risks to national security and public well-being.
She urged the public to cooperate with the Customs Department by reporting any smuggling activities via the Customs Toll-Free line at 1-800-88-8855. — The Borneo Post

Ringgit strengthens against US dollar amid fiscal support measures

Published on: Thursday, July 24, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 24, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: At 8.07 am, the local note rose to 4.2140/2320 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2255/2300. Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit strengthened against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday, supported by improved market sentiment following the latest fiscal support measures. At 8.07 am, the local note rose to 4.2140/2320 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2255/2300. 'A dash of cash handouts adds lift (to the ringgit): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a RM100 cash handout for all adult Malaysians and a plan to lower fuel prices, aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures and likely to cycle quickly back into the local economy,' SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes also noted that the ringgit opened a touch firmer, though with a cautious step, as traders weighed the absence of a formal US-Malaysia trade deal against growing signs that one may soon be in the cards. 'Optimism still lingers around the announcement of the US-Japan agreement, and whispers of a pending US-European Union (EU) pact, awaiting a signature Trump reveal, are keeping risk appetite supported,' he added. Meanwhile, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said anticipation of a possible trade deal between the US and the EU has fuelled positive sentiment in the US benchmark equities, while yields on US Treasury bonds were also higher. He noted that there appeared to be a risk-on mode in the financial markets, which has led the US Dollar Index to drop 0.18 per cent to 97.214 points. 'As such, expect the ringgit to remain positive today, with the US dollar/ringgit likely to oscillate between RM4.22 and RM4.23,' said Mohd Afzanizam. At the opening, the ringgit was mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It advanced against the Japanese yen to 2.8774/8899 from 2.8837/8870 and was slightly higher against the British pound at 5.7201/7445 from 5.7230/7291. However, the ringgit eased slightly against the euro to 4.9590/9802 from 4.9586/9639. The local note was firmer against regional peers. It rose vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3007/3153 from 3.3071/3109 and appreciated against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.4/259.6 from 259.1/259.5. The ringgit also inched higher against the Philippine peso to 7.40/7.44 from 7.42/7.44 and increased against the Thai baht to 13.0992/1613 from 13.1370/1567. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Anwar: Lower RON95 price, toll hike freeze meant to ease burden on M40

PUTRAJAYA, July 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said the lower RON95 petrol price and delayed toll hikes are meant to ease the burden on Malaysia's M40 group. Anwar, who's also the finance minister, explained that while the B40 group typically uses motorcycles, which consume less fuel, the M40 group mostly relies on cars, leading to higher petrol costs. 'Now, if we look at RON95 priced at RM1.99 and the toll, if you're in the B40 group and riding a motorcycle, fuel consumption is minimal. But for the M40, most use motorcars, which means higher fuel consumption,' he said during his speech at the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly. Anwar said the government is not neglecting the M40 group, but stressed that implementation requires time. 'So when some in the M40 say the government is only considering the B40, it's natural. We started not just with the B40, but with the hardcore poor, then moved up to B40, and now we're extending to M40. 'That's the situation. Which is why I've said, we need to be patient with its implementation. But at the very least, praise to God, for the M40 group, both the RON95 and toll subsidies are now also benefitting them and those in higher income brackets,' he said. Yesterday, Anwar announced a one-off cash aid of RM100 for all Malaysians aged 18 and above, as well as the lowering of the RON95 petrol price from RM2.05 to RM1.99 per litre once the fuel subsidy rationalisation is implemented later this year. Anwar also announced the government's plan to defer a scheduled toll hike this year as it aims to keep the cost of mobility low. He said that his government is ready to compensate concessionaires, with the deferment expected to cost RM500 million.

PM shrugs off #TurunAnwar rally, says RM100 aid matters to those who need it

PUTRAJAYA, July 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has brushed off the upcoming 'Turun Anwar' rally scheduled for this Saturday, saying calls for him to resign will not have any political effect as the next general election is still over two years away. 'This isn't about political questions, because the next election is more than two years away. So calling for Anwar to step down won't have any effect, don't worry,' he said in his speech during the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly here. He was referring to the #TurunAnwar rally the opposition bloc Perikatan Nasional is organising this weekend. Anwar also pushed back against critics who dismissed the RM100 one-off aid he announced yesterday, stressing that the assistance is meant for those in need. 'Yesterday, I announced several additional measures. In the political world, if some people feel offended, so be it. Some said, 'Only RM100?' 'Well, if you're earning RM20,000 or RM40,000 a month, RM100 might not mean much. But I know that when you go into the villages, it does mean something. This is an addition. When I hear some opposition MPs say, 'Only RM100,' I wonder, did they not read properly? And when I said they were short-sighted, they got upset. 'This is an increase from RM13 billion to RM15 billion. It's on top of what has already been implemented. The same applies to fuel prices,' he added. He cited the example of a low-income household of four, saying the aid could amount to an additional RM400 for the family. 'That's on top of the STR and i-Sara support currently in place. Don't belittle that,' he said. Yesterday, Anwar announced a one-off cash aid of RM100 for all Malaysians aged 18 and above, as well as the lowering of the RON95 petrol price from RM2.05 to RM1.99 per litre once the fuel subsidy rationalisation is implemented later this year.
